Surely this mouse deserved to live.

[–]HeadBoy 41 points42 points ago

Yes, but reality has a way of killing those most deserving

He was put in the snake tank, hardly natural selection, when most likely breed just for snake food, the fact he shows more resilience than regular mice who just die. Just goes to show how there should be a new league of gladiators but with mice instead. It will be glorious and it shall be spectacular mouse-tactular.

[–]zanhoshi 1 point2 points ago

I know, I want to see Kingdom Hearts 3 too...

[–]MrWinks 9 points10 points ago

Old gif. First time I saw it I remember thinking to myself that if the mouse can kill the snake, then he can keep the tank and I'll just feed him snakes instead.

[–]AbrahamVanHelsing 0 points1 point ago

"Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you (stick your hand into a gif of a snake tank and) give it to them, Paul?"

Hijacking top comment:

This was from a video my coworker put online about 7-8 years ago, I think it made its way through ebaumsworld at one point. There are many re-uploads on YouTube, I'll ask him for the original link. Maybe he can do a snake feeding AMA lol.

Edit: Yes lets downvote a post that contains relevant information to the topic.

[–]rptwinkie 19 points20 points ago

We had a mouse like this in my high school biology class. It burrowed under some of the foliage, hid, and kept climbing out and attacking the snake. They decided to save it and I took it home as a victory pet. Aww.

[–]tommybread 9 points10 points ago

He grew moustaches on each of his fists shortly after this was filmed due to the sheer manliness of the act.

[–]PatronofSnark 6 points7 points ago

He was pissing pure whiskey for a week after that.

[–]yethegodless 2 points3 points ago

...ow.

[–]kooliokevin 18 points19 points ago

Are you not entertained?!

[–]Chadwag 16 points17 points ago

So the mouse lived right?

[–]Jpolo45 11 points12 points ago

If the snake stayed as stupid as you just saw

[–]darkshy 7 points8 points ago

Stupid or smart? The cage is only so big and that mouse will eventually wear itself out. No need to rush :)

[–]Jpolo45 2 points3 points ago

Touché

[–]New_Ingenue 12 points13 points ago

Does he survive... *teary eyes

[–]Coloneljesus 8 points9 points ago

If it makes you feel any better, I buy my mice dead and frozen (in 20 piece bulk packs).

[–]rscozzens 7 points8 points ago

Well that sure makes me feel better!

[–]Thrayne 4 points5 points ago

Too bad he still died.

[–]pkempf 3 points4 points ago

I hope the owner saved the mouse and kept it as a pet, in honor of outstanding acts of kickassery and valor.

What I do when my mom tries to give me a kiss

[–]MunchToast 32 points33 points ago

Really? I love it when your mom kisses me.

[–]SignHere____________ 6 points7 points ago

[–]tommybread 3 points4 points ago

Bro. He's talking about your mom bro. Learn that bitch.

What a coincidence, so do I!

[–]Albaek 6 points7 points ago

You just dodged some real karma there bro. Sorry. :(

[–]CakeEater 4 points5 points ago

Jerk, she's your mom...let her give you a smooch

[–]Herp-DE-lerp 3 points4 points ago

Dodging a kiss from the woman who sacrificed 9 months of her life for you, and who fed you and kept you safe everyday. Douche.

[–]lulzcopter19 2 points3 points ago

An analogy to Nazi Zombies. You are the mouse. The snake is represents the never ending horde of zombies. You want the mouse to win. But you know it won't.

[–]Namenlos 4 points5 points ago

There is a clever "Gummy Juice" comment in here somewhere.

Alas, I am not very clever :(

[–]-crave 0 points1 point ago

[–]chiliwhip 1 point2 points ago

I have a feeling that this didn't end well for the mouse.

[–]Setio 1 point2 points ago

who the fuck raises snakes and feeds them mammals regularly. fucking traitors to mammal-kind.

[–]illstealurcandy 23 points24 points ago

Uuhh, anyone who's ever owned a snake? What'd you think they feed them?

[–]MrHankScorpio 17 points18 points ago

Had a friend who caught a snake. He tried to feed it crickets. The snake died. But he had a shitload of crickets.

[–]Kensin 3 points4 points ago

what did he feed them?

[–]Xphex 9 points10 points ago

cocaine and small children

[–]MrHankScorpio 2 points3 points ago

Nothing, he was not a "forward thinker". But funny story actually, in the end a bunch of got out due to his inattentiveness and their family's cat ate most of them.

The rest of them just died so he had a bunch of dead rotting crickets everywhere. In addition to the dead snake of course.

His room. Smelled. Terrible.

[–]DZ302 6 points7 points ago

You're supposed to kill the mouse/rat before feeding it to the snake...Having a live creature in the cage can be very stressful to a snake, to the point that they will lose their appetite and die of starvation. Also they can be bit and scratched...

It's not natural, snakes sneak up on their prey in the wild, they aren't put into a cage match duel.

[–]HanselSoHotRightNow 13 points14 points ago

My snake would ONLY eat this way.

I tried getting him to eat pre-killed for years but ball pythons are notoriously picky eaters, as was the case with mine. I actually ended up donating him to an exotic reptile owner and getting two female rats as pets soon after because I had more fun playing with my snakes "food" then I did with the snake itself (since you can't actually play with them). Rats are crazy fun pets and they don't eat living creatures which was a bonus.

[–]DeskFlyer 2 points3 points ago

Yeah I had a couple of ball pythons as well and they wouldn't even bother with anything that wasn't alive. Very picky eaters.

[–]NakedChicken 1 point2 points ago

It takes persistence, but it's possible. It took almost a year, but my ball python takes thawed mice without hesitation now (he's about 9 years old, I got him when he was tiny, not sure how old). I just slowly transitioned to prey that moved less and less.

[–]SergioSF 1 point2 points ago

How do you kill the mouse?

[–]DZ302 1 point2 points ago

Be creative.

[–]SergioSF 1 point2 points ago

Playing the game of mouse trap?

[–]Coloneljesus 1 point2 points ago

To be fair, mine also eats dead mice. Living ones are more interesting to watch though.

[–]SecretSnack 3 points4 points ago

Sorry, I just have a problem with feeding likely-more-sentient creatures to less-sentient creatures. No I can't prove it, but I'm damn sure mice feel more than snakes do.

[–]illstealurcandy 7 points8 points ago

It is the natural order.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]DeskFlyer 3 points4 points ago

I think they meant 'natural order of the food chain'.

[–]illstealurcandy 3 points4 points ago

Ehhh, depends on how problematic my health is, but I see your point. What exactly else is a snake supposed to eat?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Magnon 1 point2 points ago

Snakes natural habitat has been largely destroyed by humans, like a ton of other animals.

[–]Red1337Sox 1 point2 points ago

Pet snakes are not rescues. They are born and raised to be pets. It is a completely separate ecosystem.

[–]Coloneljesus 2 points3 points ago

I think as far as animals with spines go, the reptile brain is the second lowest after the fish brain. So yeah, you are right.

But what do you think happens in real life?

[–]SecretSnack 0 points1 point ago

Similar things happen in the wild, and that's fine, it just becomes a problem when we actively facilitate suffering.

[–]Coloneljesus 0 points1 point ago

The snake dying of hunger means much more suffering than a mouse being suffocated or paralyzed by the snake.

[–]SecretSnack 0 points1 point ago*

How long do snakes live? Let's say 10 years (I have no idea). And let's say they eat a live mouse a week. The suffering of 520 mice is greater than the suffering of one starving snake, if I had to guess.

[–]Coloneljesus 0 points1 point ago

I guess, but that's not how nature works. Luckily. It would be utterly boring otherwise.

Snakes live for quite a long time. Mine will live approximately 20 years. He's 4 years old now and I have had him for 2.

[–]SecretSnack 0 points1 point ago

It's funny how suffering is just a side-effect of the game of life. What a crazy universe, sometimes I wonder why we're not all just automatons.

[–]Coloneljesus 1 point2 points ago

We are. Suffering is just a mechanism to keep us living.

[–]nitefang 2 points3 points ago

Eh, snakes gotta eat but they don't need to be fed live mice. I understand that people do it but I always prefer pre-killed frozen mice, or you knock them out.

It is actually stupid to feed live animals to your snake as mice have sharp teeth. While they will lose the fight, if your snake gets bit it can get infected and the thing will die.

[–]DexOx 1 point2 points ago

Like bacon to the average american?

[–]papaslew 1 point2 points ago

... it was then, just moments later, that the snake ate the mouse.

[–]HanselSoHotRightNow 2 points3 points ago*

Yeah, usually if you cover the tank and remove the light, the snake can catch them quickly since it doesn't necessarily need vision to do so.

Edit: You do have to still keep an eye out since the rodents can harm your snake. I definitely do not recommend leaving them unattended with rats especially, rats are super smart and a lot better at fighting back.

[–]GT225 1 point2 points ago

I've heard of fast food before, but this is ridiculous!

[–]Todomanna 0 points1 point ago

And then it had a heart attack.

[–]MrOhraesisstrakur 0 points1 point ago

Deal with it

[–]MySperm 0 points1 point ago

I feel sorry for the mouse :(

[–]Inferius 0 points1 point ago

That mouse is WAY too big for that snake to eat. It would burst if it ate it. You should never feed your snake anything bigger than the thickest part of its body.

[–]NoNonsenseHare 1 point2 points ago

The snake in the gif is a garter snake, so the majority of it's diet should be fish such as trout and salmon with occasional rodents. I agree that the mouse is clearly way too big for it, but the 'prey no bigger than the widest part of the snake's body' rule of thumb is extremely misleading. It would see a lot of hungry snakes if applied across the board. It depends very much on the species.

[–]XAPHAIS 0 points1 point ago

I bet he was eaten in the end

[–]Athene_Wins 0 points1 point ago

Thought reddit would be driving the "This is insanely inhumane, you shouldn't use live feed you demonic ass fuckers" angle.

Guess not.

[–]Spec_Agent_Bob 0 points1 point ago

At that point i would have kept the mouse in a cage next to the snake just to taunt him for failing

[–]oblivinite 0 points1 point ago

Pathfinder vs Brute

[–]jp5384 0 points1 point ago

No big deal, just Master Splinter doing his morning training in the dojo.

[–]matt01ss 0 points1 point ago

Got the original link from my coworker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTzbew96Yjg

Shows the full battle until the mouse's demise, also you can see how fast the mouse moves at normal speed.

[–]bobrossisgod 0 points1 point ago

Not today motherfucker

[–]MrHankScorpio 0 points1 point ago

Not today.

[–]WhiteyDude 0 points1 point ago

"Hey, sit still so I can eat you!!!!"

[–]Coloneljesus 1 point2 points ago

Silly you, snakes don't speak.

[–]ShorttStuff 2 points3 points ago

WhiteyDude must speak Parsel Tongue!

[–]WhiteyDude 1 point2 points ago

Yesssssssss.

[–]bleakzero 0 points1 point ago

It's funny because the mouse died a few seconds later.

[–]nicholas240 -1 points0 points ago

The biology major in me is going to come out and say this is actually quite dangerous for the snake. When feeding a pet snake you must feed it frozen mice. A mouse's defense against a snake is to jump on its back and bite on the spine, hoping to paralyze the snake. In other words, bad owner. Bad.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

I used to work at an exotic pet store, and I can honestly say, I have never seen a mouse that awesome. Usually whenever I would feed the snakes, the mouse/rat NEVER stood a chance, but this mouse...this mouse deserves an award.
