you know video games have come a along way when my first thought was this was a screen shot from a game.

I spent a good 15 seconds trying to decide if this was real or another tech demo shot for a game engine.

The reason I thought the same when I first saw it, is that it's so clear.

Despite what is likely lots of motion, the image has no blurring. Pretty amazing shot.

I really would like to get some sort of time travel device and take some howitzers back to like the olden days when castles and bows and arrows and swords were used and declare war on them all and be king but I would also request that I had some Apache helicopters and maybe a warship off the coast to hold ammo an things. They would all think it was witch craft and be shit scarred but I know it would be just science and engineering. Imagine if you showed one of them a ipad you would be like merlin or some shit, yeah man take over the world with a ipad and just have weird videos on it to freak them out, videos of lord of the rings or star-wars would send them crazy.

No air conditioning, indoor plumbing, or internet. I'd rather be an average citizen now than a king back in the old days.

[–]ctesibius 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They had indoor loos - the "long drop" variety into the moat in the case of castles. Several castles were invaded by people climbing up through the privy. Some other places had rows of loos with a stream running underneath: there was an abbey with this system near where I grew up.

[–]OleYeller 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The 'rows of loos with a stream running underneath' was still a thing when my dad was growing up in 1950s north-east England. That was their outdoor privy, and that's all they had.

He used to tell me stories about how he and his brother would make paper boats, wait for a neighbour to settle down to their business and then light the boat on fire, before setting it off downstream. Cue much hilarity and scorched anuses.

With women who don't shower, use tampons/pads, and you have no way of knowing if they have any STDS (you also don't have condoms). Your parents would probably choose your wife to facilitate diplomacy. Also, every winter you freeze your ass off in your drafty castle.

There also really isn't anything to do. No mass transit or telecommunications. No electricity. Very few books (and if you did have a book, it's more than likely the Bible). Not a whole lot of variety of food or clothing. A handful of minstrels would be your only music.

And then some neighboring kingdom of assholes declares war on you. A couple villages change hands, a bunch of people get killed, and then you sign some peace treaty to hold them off long enough for both sides to recover and do it again. Occasionally, some of your nobles will try to kill you. More than likely several of your children will die in childhood.

Shit sucks. But you DO get to boss people around and wear a crown. So there are some perks.

[–]Kangaroo__Court 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

See, we are thinking of completely different examples here of kings. I was thinking of some boss motherfucker like Louis XIV and you are thinking of the Duchy of smallfuckingplaceland.

Lol, condoms... I'm sure I can find some gut casing somewhere! It works for sausages.

So where do you plan on plugging in your iPad? And the fuel for the ship? And restocking of the Howitzer shells?

[–]manticore116 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you can make lead castings for shells, and make exploding ones similar to civil war shells, with much better ballistics, black powder is simple to make to repack the casings with. as for power, the ship will have a genny, and it's either got a reactor good for a few decades, or it's got a motor that can be converted to run on wood gas. the howitzer is overkill though, i would rather take a case of AK47's, or a couple of 10ga lever action wells fargo shotguns. they would be MUCH easier to keep around.
the other thing you have to consider is that as long as you have enough supply's to keep everything running a year or 2, you can make a doctrin to mine steel and such, using knowledge you poses and begin to make advances

What's with the two piles of stones being tossed?

[–]westyfield 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can see most of the ground is covered in those large gravel pieces. Looking at a similar artillery piece (not sure if it's the same type as in the original picture but it looks close), you can see it's got two supports at the back. The recoil from the gun would force those supports back, kicking up loads of gravel.

[–]OleYeller 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably a really dumb question, but why is it such a complicated machine? I understand the need for the barrel, and for a system that allows the barrel to be adjusted in terms of angle, and a shock-absorption system, but what are all the other 'bits' for?

Please pardon ignorance, genuinely interested.

[–]westyfield 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Modern artillery weapons have loads of computers in, for targeting, adjusting when the shell explodes, compensating for wind and so on. There'll also be a bunch of cooling systems in there, to allow it to be continually fired for longer. Optics for aiming (better seen in this image), plus loads of hydraulics for movement and shock absorption also make up a lot of the complicated-looking stuff.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert, it sounds like Qhost over here knows more about it than I do, so it's probably worth asking him/her.

[–]Guysmiley777 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which bits are you referring to? Everything on there is related to sighting, T&E (traverse & elevation), recoil absorption or allowing it to fold up and be towed by a vehicle.

[–]OleYeller 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All the bits that aren't the barrel and wheels, I suppose. Sorry, I'm not taking the piss and I do appreciate the replies (and now understand why it might have more bits than, say, a cannon).

Thanks both commenters. I'm not really a mechanical sort of bloke, as you might have guessed.

[–]Squarish 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Barring the obviousness of being in danger from whatever they are firing at, having rocks kicked up like that seems like an easy way to injure your own men. Is there some reasoning for it?

[–]Qhost 36 points37 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, with each subsequent firing, the weapon digs itself into the ground, stabilizing it further for the next shot. This allows it's computer(s) to make far more accurate shots.

Another interesting thing, is that you can program when you want the shell to explode. You can tell it to explode 9 meters above the grounds, so it sprays out and causes damage over a wide area, you can ask it to explode when it hits the ground, or you can (this is awesome) ask it to explode after it hits the ground. So the shell burrows into the earth and then blows up, this is to attack people in bunkers.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I get the feeling you've stood next to one of these puppies while it was fired. Care to take a shot at describing the sensation?

[–]Qhost 29 points30 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I personally haven't, but my brother is training to be a officer and recounted this all to me when he was in Sandhurst, or Larkhill... (forget :P ).

He told me a few things about the experience, I'll roughly articulate what he said.

'Hey Qhost, so we got to witness a volley of artillery shells being fired. We stood in a field, and one of the officers used a laser-pointer (don't know the name) at the field next to us, and they sent the co-ordinates to the group of artillery 20 miles away. We waited for a moment and then suddenly we here a huge BOOM which was the guns firing, then moments later we here a WHEEEEEEEEEE as the shells fly through the air, and suddenly the field in-front of us just disintegrates as the shells hit.'

I then asked him about being next to one when it fires.

'Well, we have to wear 2 sets of ear-defenders because one just isn't enough, an internal and external one. What's incredible is when it fires you FEEL it. The recoil is so large and so fast that the gun displaces the air around it and you feel a rush as the air moves in to fill in the space.'

He also told me how the main cannon on a challenger 2 tank is so accurate that it can hit a target first time with something like 99.7% accuracy. He also said how only 3 challenger tanks have been destroyed; 2 of them by other challenger 2 tanks. When we invaded iraq / afghanistan (Not sure which one) - and we went up against their tank divisions, we didn't even bother with evasive manoeuvres because there cannons couldn't damage our tanks. We just drove at them firing.

Another interesting tibit from him: 'The UK has the ONLY anti-aircraft system that can pick up a US Stealth Bomber. Because the UK and USA often test out their weapon systems with each other, and the US flew over a stealth bomber just to see if anything can pick it up. And suddenly, one of our anti-air turrets activated and started to track this plane as it flew over our space. Bricks were shat'

He also talked about how awesome it was to control one of the turrets with an xbox controller. It must be unreal to move the control stick and have this HUGE multi-tonne weapon move smoothly with it.

[–]squek22 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone who shoots these for a living I must say it's quite an experience. I shoot the same type of weapon, just a different howitzer. We shoot the m109A6 Paladin, same tube and caliber of round, only it's self propelled as opposed to towed. It's pretty loud, but you get used to it, we don't really use ear protection most of the time because it makes it difficult to hear people talking around you during fire missions, but when we're in the gun shooting we have a CVC (Helmet with headphones and microphones) to talk to each other, and it offers some hear protection. I would imagine the impacts are pretty loud, since we can hear them impact 15-20 miles away.

The feeling you get when it fires its something incredible, the first few times at least. After shooting thousands of rounds from them it kind of becomes second nature though, we can sleep through them shooting now. :P

[–]tomdarch 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you guys have to prep your site (like the gravel in the OP's photo) or can you pretty much park and fire?

[–]squek22 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We do what is called "occupying" which is where we pretty much make sure our part of the firing point is safe to fire from. It's different for every artillery piece, since ours is so "high tech" and most of the work is done through a computer there's a lot less work we need to do, but other pieces like the M119A1 and M777 require a little more work to prep before they fire.

I don't think the gravel was intentionally put on the spades, I think the spot was just all gravel, in all honesty I would rather fire on dirt than rocks because they kick A LOT, and I'd would personally rather get peppered in the face with dirt than rocks.

We can do what is called hip shooting though, which is where we get a fire mission while moving and just lay on our target (point at it) and fire.

I've fired quite a few 105's. The overpressure from the round firing is like getting punched in the chest- ear protection is absolutely mandatory and, even then, being surprised by a shell going off completely disorients you. The ground in the vicinity of the battery is constantly shuddering as if a large truck is driving by. Awesome, terrifying power.

Thought I'd chime in here... I was previously an artillery officer and as a part of our training, we shot the M777 when it was relatively new. I think only the Marines fielded it at the time. It's a really sweet gun compared to the M198. It automates a lot of the crew tasks and is also a lot lighter and air mobile. We did gun crew runs on both pieces, and the M777 was just so much smoother. It's MUCH lower to the ground and looks kind of like a spider with the spades out.

Both 155mm pieces are a blast to shoot. When you are the guy pulling the lanyard or anywhere in about a 3 meter area right behind the gun, you can physically feel the air get sucked in around you. It really makes you laugh at the 105mm guns or anything else. I never wore dual ear pro, but you definitely wanted the triple flange kind. It wasn't loud so much as it was concussive, if that makes any sense. I only shot once without ear pro... really bad decision. Nothing long term, but I had a nice low-level humming for a few weeks.

Now the real treat of FAOBC (Field Artillery Officer Basic Course) was the bunker shoot. You call artillery (it's 105mm, but still...) Danger Close to your position in a bunker. Danger Close is within 400 meters, but our instructors let us walk it in onto our position to around I would guess 200 meters away. Which is plenty close enough, trust me.

There's a lot of weird Redleg traditions, like burning propellant and Time on Target missions that were a lot of fun, as well. We did a few ToT's where we launched one shell high angle (think almost vertical) and another low angle, and tried to get them to impact at the same time. And we did it with manual gunnery (no computer assistance/AFATDS). Got pretty close.

I was a rocket officer, after all of that. Which was cooler, but the cannon cockers hated us.

The stones also prevent the howitzer from becoming stuck in soft ground. Each of those stones will distribute forces much faster than it would do if it were simply dug into a hole in the ground.

The proximity fuse are scary/awesome. They are different from the ones in the pic.

I used to freak out my crew when setting prox fuses-they have (had?) a plastic nosecone so the radio can work. I'd take a rubber mallet & smack the round right where the fuse screwed in to loosen the works and set the time by hand. Not the smartest thing I've done, but it got the new guys to listen.

[–]dengh 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The M777 155mm howitzer has "spades" (honking big shovel blades) at the end of the carriage arms to transfer the recoil energy into the ground. In some prepared firebases, they set up the gun positions with gravel pits if the ground is unsuitable or if they expect to need to substantially reorient the piece to fire in other directions.

Tossing a more-or-less 100 lb shell 15 km or so generates a bunch of recoil.

[–]chonglibloodsport 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm no expert but my guess is that the gravel absorbs the recoil.

[–]westyfield 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unlikely. I doubt it would cause much injury; they don't look like they're going very high, most people are out of the way, and they're all wearing goggles/glasses. It's probably just a trade-off for having a smooth-ish surface to fire from. Although I suppose it's possible that they're there to absorb some of the recoil, instead of letting the gun do all the work.

I'm not in the military or anything like that though - I'm just a guy with opinions who likes speculating, so take my comments with as much salt as you like. :)

[–]BeyondSight 1 point2 points ago

I see! Seems kind of dangerous? Do they have to rebury the supports each fire?

[–]westyfield 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No idea. I don't think they're buried as such, it's more likely the supports being pushed backwards suddenly, pushing the gravel back and up (think about kicking a pile of soil or gravel - even if your foot moves horizontally it'll still push whatever you're kicking up a bit).

[–]ShhGoToSleep 3 points4 points ago

In 2003 Iraq we used direct fire whenever we had to. Technically, looking through the tube, inserting a round and powder, then shooting.

However, something about driving a 20 foot cannon down the street makes the enemy rather...hard to find.

[–]me_and_batman 6 points7 points ago

Any kind of FA (field artillery) can be used for close support as long as the FO (forward observer) is calling everything in correctly. Depending on Ammo type you can be landing rounds within 100 meters of your own troops with great accuracy. Again, depending on round/gun type you have a range where you are "Danger Close" and extra measures are taken.

My good friend was an FDO (fire direction officer) and had a number of relevant stories. He told me that he was laying massive rounds and could hear all kinds of shit going on through the radio. Met the guy that was calling for fire a couple days later and told him thanks for the fire support. He told my friend that the round were landing exactly where he needed it... 50-100 meters from his guys, but never called "danger close" because he didn't want to put any pressure on him.

If you meant close support as in direct fire... yes, but very rarely. If this were the case, you would probably be fucked anyway.

[–]MountainLionKingKong 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Danger close is 600 meters from friendly forces, so 50-100 meters is essentially right up their asses. Crazy skills.

[–]Time_for_Stories 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How do you calculate what angle to fire the shell from and how do you calculate it so fast?

I assume someone tells you a map coordinate and you're meant to land it there. You could maybe use the kinematic equation since you know the potential energy of each round. It doesn't take into account air resistance or wind shear or weather conditions or differing air pressures. I just don't understand how artillery can be so accurate. Is there a computer you plug the numbers into or is there someone actually sitting around doing the math. Even then it doesn't seem very efficient to do SUVAT equations when perhaps the fire support is urgent.

[–]pauldh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Marine Corps infantry here. These things are absolutely used for "close" (relative term) support, as long as everyone involved knows what they're doing. Also, to address the general perception that these things are leveling cities... with the precision rounds available today, it's usually possible to hit people in a courtyard without dropping the adjacent buildings.

Beyond the blind patriotism the American military really is something to be in awe of. In a full-scale mobilization the U.S. military definitely could rival those of the rest of the world combined. We have more aircraft carriers than the rest of the world combined. All but one of our carriers are Nimitz class nuclear powered super-carriers which are about twice as big as the the largest of any other countries. Each one of our carriers probably has more airpower than most countries entire air-force.

The fact is that our bloated military budget does buy the most powerful military on the planet. This may or may not be a good thing but you could view it as a major stabilizing force in the world. No country would dare undertake any military action which would provoke U.S. involvement. The problem of course though is that this also pushes our agenda on the world and gives the U.S. a lot of weight in global affairs.
