All I know is that Blackwater/Xe/Whatever they're called now, are bad.

But my former lecturer likes them b/c he got to visit their HQ in the US and after an hour, they let him hold a rifle. In a target shooting contest, he won 3rd place behind 2 police officers.

I don't know about everyone else, but I stopped having summers a long time before I graduated. I worked, had summer school, did internships. The worst part was that all my friends dispersed as well. Summers sucked for me, I always yearned for returning to normal life.

I like not having to put up with a ridiculous 2 month "break". They always end up being more work and more depressing in the end.

My favorite parts of summer:late evenings, nice weather, bar-b-q's, cute girls in summer dresses, still happen. Just now I get a steady paycheck to buy beer with.

It all depends on your line of work I guess. I travel a lot so the summers for me means that all my friends are having fun (as per your last statement) while I'm in a hotel somewhere. At least in the winter everyone is miserable.

I feel you. My second to last summer vacation saw me working 7 days a week: 40 hours as a camp maintenance guy, 16 hours at a gas station.

The summer I graduated from college I spent 10 weeks in Mexico supervising volunteers in rural areas. The catch was I was sick 9 weeks out of the 10, but otherwise a fun trip...

Implying everyone's summer experience is like yours was.

For me summer is amazing. I went to high school in one of the nicest areas in the country and 3 of my 5 best friends from high school (which will be my best friends for life, I've no doubt about that) are going to be there with me when I get back in a couple weeks. Don't have to cook, don't have to pay for gas, don't have to do laundry, get to spend a lot of time with family I don't see throughout the rest of the year, hell there's not a damn thing about that I don't like. Sure there's still work to be done with internships and summer courses for distribution credits at a local community college but honestly I would take doing stress free work for 30 hours a week over 15 hours of class + obscene amounts of work/studying/exams + grades and a GPA looming over you any day. I realize some people enjoy their time at school more than their summer vacations and I can certainly understand the reasons why, but there are plenty of reasons behind why a person would enjoy being home for summer more than being at college and simply because they do not apply to you does not mean they don't apply to anyone. I suppose if my family was in a different socioeconomic class I'd probably feel differently, but I'm lucky to have what I have and I make sure to enjoy it to the fullest.

AFAIK in the US most colleges start in mid-August and get out sometime in May - with the exception of Pepperdine, which gets out in April (I think this week, actually) but has a week long winter break, as opposed to the average 3-4 weeks for other colleges.

I disagree. Remember in High School when you'd get projects to do? And they would take, like, four whole hours to finish and you'd complain about how much of a pain it was?

It's like that, except each project takes 60-70 hours. And you only have two weeks to do it. And when it's done you have to write a paper about it.

Not at my university. Unless you have work study loans (which I don't believe you have to pay back, but I've never had them), residence/room and board come out of pocket or from federal loans. Despite that, most of my friends who still live on campus have jobs anyway, just to be able to pay for things like eating out, seeing movies, etc.

I remember my final day after submitting my master's thesis. I put my coffee cup and some books into a cardboard box, took it under my arm and carried it all the way from the master's students offices, and to the admission office in another building, sat down behind my desk, and started working. I had to apply for a leave of absence from my job in order to attend my oral dissertation.

After over 20 years in some sort of formal education I am very likely done pretty much for good next week, graduating with a masters. I feel sad about it. I really doubt things are gonna get better from here. I am gonna have a decent job, but, I have a hard time believing the overall quality of my life isn't going to go down significantly.

I am never going to make enough money to do anything REALLY cool and I am going to have to spend all my time doing something that will become routine.
