At this point, giving the image's vintage, I doubt we'll ever know unless some intrepid internet investigator gets hands on an original video showing said context.

That being said, I'm willing to bet it's nothing special: dumb kids sitting around doing dumb shit; the only mildly exceptional element is that crotch-stomping guy really put his heart into it and/or took advantage of the situation. I remember a dozen incidents of Zippo lighter wielding kids setting parts of their shoes or jeans on fire (sometimes even lighting their smoke off the burning article) before putting it out. This is, I believe, nothing more than the even dumber version of that.

See, there are multiple tiers -- currents, if you will -- in the reddit Karma economy. OP here is getting upvotes from newer members who haven't seen this gif before and from old hands who are happy to see it again. The bulk of the Karma goes to him or her (or whatever) for the amusement experienced by those upvoting the post. Those of us who engage in the repost-hate create a second tier or current of amusement - finding new and amusing ways of expressing the old idea of repost frustration. A smaller share of the Karma goes to us. And better still, we engender yet a third tier of comments -- the repost-hate-haters, who get their own share of Karma (as you may have noticed, sometimes more than the repost-hate posters they are responding to). And Viola! Karma for everyone!
