Where am I? What's a Vertical? What isn't?

r/Vertical is a subreddit dedicated to the posting of vertical comics. Verticals are images composed of a set of frames displayed vertically with captions overlaid onto each of them. The final frame usually delivers a punchline. They are usually taken from popular scenes in films or events. Vertical comics contain continuity and are not simply memes stacked one on top of another. Still confused?

What can I do here?

This is by Humon who also does the webcomic Scandinavia and the World. I know there are some webcomics that can't handle a sudden influx of traffic but I think DA and SatW can handle it, post the source.

I didn't even know what the source was; thank you for posting the link to her webcomic.

Edit: Gender

Humon is a female

"The planet is fine. The people are fucked!" - George Carlin

[–]guitarjag72[S] 6 points7 points ago

I was waiting for someone to quote the great George Carlin on this.

"Why are we here?"

"PLASTIC, ASSHOLE!"

[–]Nihilistic_pie 5 points6 points ago

The only people to suffer from all of this are the chickens. They're decent people, and we've fucked them over.

"If the Earth don't like us it'll shake us just like we were a cold." Dashboard by Modest Mouse.

"I'm simply saying that, uh, life...finds a way."

Says humans are arrogant for equating themselves to nature.
Personifies mother nature as a human.

[–]angrybrother273 9 points10 points ago

It's metaphor. It's art.

[–]rob7030 0 points1 point ago

Obviously that's the only way we could understand her (in our own self centeredness), so she was awesome and showed herself that way.

[–]mydogisdumb 15 points16 points ago

i dont feel comfortable with this, its going to give people an excuse to be lazy and fuck up the enviroment.

"nature will always adapt, i saw it in a reddit post" dumps garbage in recovering ecostystem

[–]TheSimpleArtist 10 points11 points ago

Plus, it advocates the Humans != Nature theory.

[–]bigcitycrows 2 points3 points ago

I think it eloquently and succinctly addresses the thought that is already widely used, which is "So? Tons of things go extinct/change/regenerate in nature!" and comes back with "yeah, but that doesn't mean it's the kind of state that we particularly want."

[–]mydogisdumb 0 points1 point ago

Makes sense, but i think people are going to be more happy with an excuse to be lazy

[–]dylng 2 points3 points ago

Its should be even more motivation for change. Someone may not care about ice caps and penguins but society breaking down may be a problem.

Nature will adapt, in fact temperature and CO2 levels will continue to rise and stabilise at a higher level even if we were to miraculously cut our emissions now. Its damage limitation from here.

[–]mydogisdumb 1 point2 points ago

there are other things besides emissions that are ruining our environment, there is literally a floating mass of plastic in the pacific ocean the size of texas plastic is not bio degradable. I don't how the ocean will ever be the same. so much animals have died because of things like this. all the animals that have gone extinct will never come back either. environments can adapt to natural changes, but not the stuff humans do to them.

[–]smallfried 4 points5 points ago

It's still fucking over the next generation. But we should not kid ourselves that we should save the environment for nature's sake, it's in our own benefit.

In the same vein, we like to safe pretty animals too. Big whales are amazing and the earth would be much less interesting without them, but the ecosystem wouldn't have a big problem adapting to a world without them.

im not too worried about one species specifically, more of the planet as a whole. it was here long before we were, and the short time we were here we were able to fuck it up for the rest of the life living without guilt. This is the only known planet to support life, and we take it for granted. we are the most destructive race in the universe.

[–]smallfried 1 point2 points ago

Life is not in danger. We could launch all nukes, pollute to the maximum of our abilities and we'd still be unable to remove the life of the planet. We'll remove a significant portion of the current species, but that's happened a couple of times before.

Don't worry about life, worry about keeping this planet livable and interesting for ourselves.

[–]mydogisdumb 0 points1 point ago

why would create so much destruction and death. Just because life can carry on doesn't mean we should kill

[–]smallfried 0 points1 point ago

I agree.

[–]jay051684 0 points1 point ago

Can you provide any proof that we are "the most destructive race in the universe"?

[–]Madrawn 0 points1 point ago

Weeeell based on how long the universum is around, the propabilitie of intelligent life, how long we humans are around, and how fast we're traveling towards our extinction, I belive it's pretty save to say that every intelligent lifeform which is more destructive then we are is already extinct.

So the chances are pretty good that we're the current "the most destructive race in the universe".

[–]jay051684 0 points1 point ago

I could possibly agree to current. But there's still no way to really know that.

[–]mydogisdumb -1 points0 points ago

do you see any other species destroying ANYTHING the way we do? no.

[–]jay051684 0 points1 point ago

I haven't studied all life in the universe like you apparently have. Can you tell me about some of it? Not the stuff on Earth, the other stuff out there in the universe.

[–]mydogisdumb -1 points0 points ago

i wasn't being literal, i cant say for sure if there is life or not. but the chances that if there are any and that they are complex and destroy more shit than humans do, are low enough to not have to argue with someone like you

[–]kdellz 2 points3 points ago

Especially since a runaway greenhouse effect can make Earth uninhabitable for any life. See Venus.

[–]Amaturus 7 points8 points ago

That's a bit dramatic. Remember the carbon we burn was already in the atmosphere at one point until trapped in biomass. The rate of change is what is dangerous to us and other species. We're not at risk of becoming Venus.

[–]mydogisdumb 0 points1 point ago

i understand where you are coming from, but just because we wont turn into venus doesn't mean we should continue to destroy our planet in other ways

[–]Madrawn 0 points1 point ago

I don't like the term "destroy" in this case.

We don't destroy the earth, we're changing it in a way which threatens the existence of its current lifeforms.

I bet nature comes up with some life which is pretty happy about more heat, CO2 and other all the other stuff we caused.

[–]mydogisdumb 0 points1 point ago

well, the gasses that destroy the ozone allow certain UV waves to get in that cause cancer, i dont think anything can live with the waves that are not in the ocean. and we do destroy a lot of things. we destroy ecosystems all the time.

[–]Madrawn 0 points1 point ago

Change... we change them. There will be surely small lifeforms happy about UV-waves because they adapt and survive 'em and the others don't so less competition.

The term "destroy" in this case is what we call "destroyed". There is no sign where we can say "yup that got definitly destroyed and not simply changed". It's more of an "ow I don't like how we change it so I'll call it 'destroyed'".

We can't really destroy earth, unless we manage to blow it into small pieces or toss it in the sun, we also can't destroy all life on earth, unless we do those things mentioned before. All we can is alter earth in a way that the current lifeforms are unable to survive unless they adapt somehow. There is no "perfect" condition in which the earth should be. There is one for us but not for life itself. As long water exist in some way life doesn't really care. Even if all life ever everywhere ceases to exist, the univers won't care.

There is no good and bad because there is no one who is able to judge in the end what was good and what was bad.

Of course this is no excuse to do or not do anything, I'm not saying go outside and burn/save every tree/whale because it doesn't matter. I just don't like the term "we destroy our enviroment" because it's sooo selfcentered, we change it and it's bad for us and most living things currently on earth, but that's it, nothing more nothing less.

[–]IShouldWorkNow 2 points3 points ago

So... we're "beloved", but we "won't be missed"?

Sometimes I feel like Nature is sending me contradictory messages.

[–]ItscalledCannabis 2 points3 points ago

That's cute, How humans do not think they are part of nature...

We are nature,

If ants were to take over the world and cover it with ant hills with amazing architecture, some ants would feel as though they were not a part of nature because they feel that they control nature.

[–]exousic 7 points8 points ago

Rep... oh

[–]lemonpole 3 points4 points ago

[–]chobi83 4 points5 points ago

I love the look on his face at the end.

[–]LnRon 0 points1 point ago

Well that isn't true at all. We really are fucking up the nature, look it up people.
