A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

are you both messing with me?

[–]larkable 9 points10 points ago

I'm not sure if you zoomed in enough... can you please zoom in a bit more?

[–]benshere 26 points27 points ago

[–]larkable 12 points13 points ago

Can you enhance that a bit? I think I see the killer's reflection in his eyes.

I wasn't going to sleep tonight if I didn't find him, so thank you.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points ago

Can you contribute more to /r/whereswaldo? It's a promising sub with not that many submissions.

[–]Armonster 2 points3 points ago

upvote for advertisement

[–]zlavan 19 points20 points ago

is he actually in there or are you fucking with me

quick edit: found that sumbitch

[–]dejaflu 8 points9 points ago

[–]FriedNaiveFog 4 points5 points ago

You should not put him in the picture, but only do it one in every 100 or 200 posts. People would be familiar with you, and slowly grow to trust you. As a result you could really fuck with people on a random day at some point in the distant future. It's a long con, but i think you can pull it off.

[–]Queefmonlee 3 points4 points ago

Fun Fact: The Flat-Iron Building was the first skyscraper in New York.

[–]guthpasta 1 point2 points ago

This is enjoyable.

[–]Armonster 1 point2 points ago

You're the best god damn novelty account ever.

[–]crackanape 9 points10 points ago*

Anyone know where I can buy a large print of this?

EDIT: Here. http://www.artnet.com/galleries/artwork_detail.asp?G=&gid=423794977&which=&ViewArtistBy=online&aid=17888&wid=426120145&source=artist&sortby=imgorder&rta=http://www.artnet.com/artwork/426120145/423794977/stephen-wilkes-flatiron.html

Unfortunately the price isn't listed. If anyone does contact them to find out how much prints are, can you post a reply here? Thanks.

[–]robrmm 1 point2 points ago

Not same one, I got one of the Flatiron building from ikea as gift for someone just last week, looks much better in person that website: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20114901/

edit - now I think it was closer to eye level than this one is, I can't remember - anyway it looks sweet and pretty much takes up an entire wall.

[–]Imperfect_robot 1 point2 points ago

yep, the only reason i knew it was the flat iron was because of ikea, the giant poster is right next to me. Also, interesting read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatiron_Building

[–]robrmm 1 point2 points ago

It's one of my favorite buildings. I took a photography class and I remember professor saying it was the most frustrating building for her to do.

[–]EricFromNYC 1 point2 points ago

I have the Ikea Flatiron building poster. It looks great!

[–]f30R[!] 1 point2 points ago

The photographers name is Stephen Wilkes. Link to his website

[–]Calpa 0 points1 point ago

If anyone does contact them to find out how much prints are, can you post a reply here? Thanks.

So.. why not contact them yourself?

[–]crackanape 0 points1 point ago

I am (1) in Europe so the time difference is annoying, and (2) lazy.

[–]gfixler 0 points1 point ago

Anyone want an interactive version?

Btw, I hate how older things are getting harder and harder to find. This link was damn near impossible, it being from 2005. I even tried ranges, but was guessing between '06 and everything before 2010. It took me a full 40 searches, and the secret word ended up being spandex. That's what finally brought it up again.

No combination of fabric, stretch, stretchy, stretchable, flexible, time, screen, dots, project, projector, siggraph (just a guess), finger, press, push, region, area, and maybe 20 other words worked. Most distressingly, I got a tremendous number of links to stores to buy everything from stretchable glue to projectors. I think that's what the internet is going to be like when The Man finally crushes net neutrality.

Every car in NYC is a yellow cab. True story.

[–]mapkinase 11 points12 points ago

1 out of 5 in 1997

[–]castellammare 0 points1 point ago

Respond to the 3-car accident, two taxi's and a taxi.

[–]Yoshokatana 9 points10 points ago

Every car is a yellow cab, unless you actually need one. And it's raining.

[–]sebdef 5 points6 points ago

It's easy to find a cab while it's raining, but the real challenge is finding an empty one

[–]Yoshokatana 1 point2 points ago

Very good point. Also, one who actually is willing to go to the boroughs.

Note: yes, I know it's illegal for them to refuse, but a lot of cabs will either lock their doors or ask where you're going before you get in.

[–]sebdef 0 points1 point ago

That's never happened to me. When they're off duty they're allowed to refuse though.

[–]sebdef -2 points-1 points ago

I hate this misconception, most cars that I see are cheap sedans or minivans. I would say that the most common model of car in NYC is the Crown Vic, but not every single goddam car in NYC is a fucking taxi.

[–]swantamer 6 points7 points ago

right by one of my favorite nyc bars, the flatiron lounge.

[–]jcy 1 point2 points ago

that bar is alright. weird tunnel shape, way too dark, no food except for peanuts

[–]swantamer 0 points1 point ago

People ask for different things from their drinking establishments, reasonable minds may differ. If I happen across a blindingly well lit, aircraft hanger sized saloon with an extensive menu I'll pass it along .+1.

[–]alexoz 0 points1 point ago

Now I want to visit this place

[–]swantamer 0 points1 point ago

A good aspiration indeed. The have an ever changing menu of antiquated cocktails so you will always find something unusual, and perhaps even a little challenging, awaiting you.

[–]sebdef 0 points1 point ago

While you're there, check out the Shake Shack in the park that you can see in the left side of the picture. My favorite burger/shake place in the city.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Everybody's favorite burger/shake place in the city, that damn line...

[–]sebdef 0 points1 point ago

You gotta get there half an hour before the rush

[–]daMagistrate67 0 points1 point ago

Blue9 my dude

[–]ping2185 0 points1 point ago

A friend of mine just finished renovating that place! It's beautiful and their cocktails are kickass.

[–]nathancrumpton 31 points32 points ago

[–]TrueAmerican1776 57 points58 points ago

Too bad Boston fucking sucks.

[–]el__duderino 39 points40 points ago

Your name vs. your comment ಠ_ಠ

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Seems pretty accurate to me.

[–]Capt_Redbeard 5 points6 points ago

this is also the location that gave rise to the phrase "23 scidoo." due to the shape of the intersection it has very high winds. these winds would lift ladies dresses and when the men figured it out they would hang around waiting. when the cops would come to stop them from loitering they would yell "23 scidoo!"

[–]graysonkelly 1 point2 points ago

[–]MildManneredFeminist 3 points4 points ago

As a lady who likes to wear dresses and get lunch in Madison Square, I can confirm that it is dangerously windy.

[–]Vanitybomb 0 points1 point ago

...from GameStop TV?

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

I saw this on stumble upon and I was thinking about posting it to reddit, but I was like, Naa no one will upvote and it's probably already been posted

[–]hautch 0 points1 point ago

It is a repost if that makes you feel better.

[–]re-re-Remix 2 points3 points ago

"two worlds, sharing nothing but latitude and longitude"

[–]hercolicious 2 points3 points ago

Whenever I see this building, I picture it saying Daily Bugle on it.

[–]bearcon 2 points3 points ago

hey its the daily bugle!

[–]whats_the_deal22 2 points3 points ago

I love working in this area. Shake shack in the park is the shit!

[–]Aerogingh_434[S] 2 points3 points ago

The guy who took this is Steven Wilkes and he has a lot of other cool photos on his website. I know a few of you have expressed interest in perhaps purchasing a print or finding a higher resolution image, and perhaps his website can help you out.

[–]jcy 2 points3 points ago

know how i know this pic isn't real? you can't see the line for shake shack on the left

[–]SirRosie 6 points7 points ago

I'm really hungover and it looks like it's moving. This is weirding me out.

[–]cowzgomoo 5 points6 points ago

On the night side of the picture in the background, are those the Twin Tower holograms, just fainter?

[–]SamTheGeek 10 points11 points ago

Holograms? They're just light projected into the sky. They're never extremely bright, and they might have been turned off during the exposure. Or it could be an effect from the post-processing.

[–]adamnyc 8 points9 points ago

Every year, around September 11th, two lights are projected into the sky from the WTC. This is what you're seeing.

[–]nonameuser -2 points-1 points ago

Battery park actually.

[–]adamnyc 1 point2 points ago

Never knew that. Thought it was at Ground Zero.

[–]blacksheepboy14 2 points3 points ago

You never knew that because it's not true.

[–]Kankikr 1 point2 points ago

Dat blend.

[–]SomethingClepher 1 point2 points ago

I remember eating Italian Gelato on a nice summer day there. P.S Eataly is fucking awesome.

[–]ballerstatus89 1 point2 points ago

I cannot wait to visit that city in a mnth.

[–]SMG247 1 point2 points ago

Wow, the difference here is really night and day!

[–]Sturmvogel 1 point2 points ago

Love that fucking city.

[–]nerdydillinger 1 point2 points ago

I work literally right around the corner on 24th street. So as this hits INCREDIBLY close to home, the upvote comes quite naturally.

[–]McNally_52 1 point2 points ago

Cars travel at warp speed during the night

[–]bengold 1 point2 points ago

My office is on East 21st between Park and Broadway, so I see this every day. Never gets old.

[–]dez0 1 point2 points ago

SICK SHOT

[–]1920NYC 1 point2 points ago

Yup, I work a block away from there. Walk past it every day and every night.

[–]dustycfasho 1 point2 points ago

This is truly a beautiful picture. Amazing skill as well for whoever the photographer is.

[–]Mav828 2 points3 points ago

Which intersection in NYC is this @?

[–]Aerogingh_434[S] 10 points11 points ago

5th and Broadway

[–]dontshowtoenails 7 points8 points ago

5th and Broadway at 23rd St. Right across from Madison Square Park

[–]SamTheGeek 2 points3 points ago

(Seen in the lower-left corner)

[–]BURN_THE_WITCH 8 points9 points ago

People sure do love pointing out how familiar they are with New York.

But in all seriousness, there are two Brooklyn bound N,R entrances in the right half of the image.

[–]Mrcoat 5 points6 points ago

Also on the right is Eataly which has an awesome gelato selection. I use to work 3 blocks from there.

[–]egocentricplasticman 0 points1 point ago

I was just there a few weeks ago, they have all around great food. I think it's owned by Mario Batali (from the Food Network).

[–]sebdef 0 points1 point ago

Be sure to check out the Metropolitan Life Insurance Building, built in 1909, just to the left of here!

[–]castellammare 0 points1 point ago

If you look closely, you could see me waving to the camera in the taxi 9th from top.

[–]w4ck02 0 points1 point ago

and to the left is Shake Shack, which has awesome burgers.

[–]SamTheGeek 2 points3 points ago

I've only got moderate familiarity with the city - but when I am there, it's usually either the upper east side or the region between SoHo and Madison Square park. So....I'm familiar with the ground-level version of this view.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I think burn_the_witch shares the same problem I have, which is knowing that guy who's been to nyc a couple of times, then brings it up all the time, especially when it doesn't add anything to the conversation.

[–]lionheartednyhc 2 points3 points ago

I was just in NYC a few weeks ago and met someone that fits that description!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I see what you did there.

[–]SamTheGeek 1 point2 points ago

A couple of times wouldn't cover it for me.

"Hey, have you ever been to Times Square? I love that place!"

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I think I should be clear I don't think you're being that guy.

[–]SamTheGeek 1 point2 points ago

Figured as much.

"Say, have you ever driven across the Brooklyn Bridge? It's really cool, I even got to spend an hour and a half on it last Tuesday!"

[–]BURN_THE_WITCH 0 points1 point ago

My school's around around there, I'm just making fun of myself. By making fun of other people. >.>

[–]Yoshokatana 1 point2 points ago

I actually just found out there's a Schnippers to the left of the pic, on 23rd. I order food from them online all the time, but never knew where they were located.

I work in the same building as them. Now I feel like a dick when I run into their delivery guys.

I still order online, though.

[–]daMagistrate67 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, let's not fuck around here guys.

The groundfloor of the flatiron is currently a Sprint store, and there's a TD bank across the street at 23rd street and 5th (bottom right of this image)

[–]zetanio 0 points1 point ago

Picture is actually taken from above 25th street on 5th avenue Source: I live a block away.

[–]vucinic 2 points3 points ago

Amazing picture of one of my favourite buildings. Disappointingly, I couldn't find a higher rez image, this is the best I could find.

[–]powpowtmow 2 points3 points ago

Which building, the triangular one? You know its name?

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatiron_Building

[–]vucinic 0 points1 point ago

Yeah of course. Such an amazing building.

[–]Solonik 1 point2 points ago

oo that is right near eatly (so epicly good).

[–]5A704C1N 3 points4 points ago

Eataly

[–]jackinthecrapper 1 point2 points ago

The taxis sure get faster at night!

[–]Jerapis19 0 points1 point ago

How did u get it like that? I'm a little new to photography

[–]moderator000 0 points1 point ago

It's just 3 pictures taken at the same spot, masked together in an editor such as photoshop. I don't think there's any way to do it from camera effects.

[–]thedinnerdate 0 points1 point ago

if you actually go to the photographers website or read the blogs where he talks about it, this photo is actually a lot more than three photos. I've done similar photo's with only two exposures though. http://i.imgur.com/wqLLl.jpg

[–]moderator000 0 points1 point ago

Wow, I like your photograph. Very nice. I had no idea that it was so much more.

[–]thedinnerdate 0 points1 point ago

thanks!

[–]rthunderc6 0 points1 point ago

Killer shot and edit work.

[–]belfastbiker 0 points1 point ago

really, really excellent. i'm so using my own version of this for my GCSE Photography project. Thank you.

[–]-Fake 0 points1 point ago

I can look at these pictures for a ridiculously long time.

[–]faptober 0 points1 point ago

Oasis did it first

[–]Seiduna 0 points1 point ago

Taxi.

[–]x3ntr0pyx 0 points1 point ago

One of those beautiful days in the city, where only five of the six directions is steel gray.

[–]astrograph 0 points1 point ago

for some reason, this made me think of Fringe..

[–]joncanoe 0 points1 point ago

is night-NYC being attacked by one of those ships from independence day?

[–]Enigma776 1 point2 points ago

Nope just 2 massive search lights where the Twin Towers once were.

[–]Bier_here 0 points1 point ago

Hey i work 3 blocks from there

[–]shishkebab311 0 points1 point ago

This is awesome, great work!

[–]JimothyBilliam 0 points1 point ago

Man this looks so different than when I went to college right near there. That was 10 years ago already. I guess it should look different.... it's just a strange reality check for me.

[–]WhatTheBrett 0 points1 point ago

*Liberty City

[–]dianthe 0 points1 point ago

I was there when I visited NYC last year, that building in the middle has very cool angles, it looks completely flat if you look at it from the side. Here is the pic I took of it to show what I mean :D

[–]UnashamedPacifist 0 points1 point ago

Are the Twin Tower lights a permanent feature?

[–]shnoobles 2 points3 points ago

No. They only run it on September 11th, and I'm not sure how much longer that will be happening.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

yeah I've heard it costs an incredible amount of money to run them, not sure if they can afford it next year.

[–]PurpleComet 0 points1 point ago

Right side makes me think of this

[–]that_blue_stuff 0 points1 point ago

higher res higher res please!

[–]akubar 0 points1 point ago

So at night cars travel at warp speed? awesome

[–]Lemu3l 0 points1 point ago

anyone convert this to higher res?

[–]Prometheus312 0 points1 point ago

I work in that building!

[–]ls1003 0 points1 point ago

Taxis. Taxis everywhere.

[–]helty 0 points1 point ago

for me night is better xD

[–]Thylamide 0 points1 point ago

I fucking love that building

that is all

[–]mpitof 0 points1 point ago

Cars move faster at night, apparently.

[–]Camjd10 0 points1 point ago

This is my new backround

[–]RelaxingThought 0 points1 point ago

Go left; less chance of getting mugged if walking, less chance of drunk drivers on the road as well.

[–]Yoshokatana 1 point2 points ago

It takes a special kind of stupid to get mugged near the Flatiron.

[–]RelaxingThought 0 points1 point ago

indeed.

[–]silenc3x 0 points1 point ago

I work right there. awesome.

[–]Runnnnnnnnnn 0 points1 point ago

So I read all the comments until now and no one has asked. Are any of the buildings in the picture apartments or condos or residences of any kind? It seems like it would be cool to live there. Also expensive.

[–]Yoshokatana 1 point2 points ago

Usually either offices or ground-floor retail + apartments. It's a really nice neighborhood, but a one-bedroom costs at least $3000/month.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

you can find something cheaper than 3000 in flatiron/chelsea. not saying its going to be luxury but it also won't be a total shit hole

[–]JARSOFDUNG 1 point2 points ago

and by one bedroom, Yoshokatana means a closet. a walk-in closet if you're lucky.

[–]daMagistrate67 0 points1 point ago

Hey hey hey, that's a studio, buddy

A one-bedroom is actually a closet attached to another closet.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

the flatiron building (the building in the center of the frame) is currently all offices i believe. but there is/was a plan to make it into a boutique hotel, not sure if this is still happening. the area is nice, but like pretty much every neighborhood in NYC that isn't north of morning side heights, it can be incredibly expensive.

[–]domn8r 0 points1 point ago

Is that seating area/park new right in front of the flatiron building?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

what do you consider new? at least a few years

[–]worminator88 0 points1 point ago

Warp speed, Mr. Sulu.

[–]Im1ToThe337 0 points1 point ago

You know what NYC needs?

More taxis.

[–]orthag 0 points1 point ago

New York is interesting. All the light makes it seem like night is just as busy as day, but it's easy to find deserted stretches of road/sidewalk that would be packed during the day.

[–]JusticeBlood 0 points1 point ago

why does every picture of NYC makes me want to go there and never go away...

[–]Nirvalica 0 points1 point ago

How do you do this? Does anyone know?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

long exposure at night, great picture during the day, a good camera, good location, and some photoshopping to stitch them together.

[–]Nirvalica 0 points1 point ago

How do you stitch them together in Photoshop? That is the part I'm not familiar with.

[–]thatoneguy865 0 points1 point ago

You know a city is cool when night's more active than day.

[–]Stolichanya 0 points1 point ago

What the fuck is up with you making love to HDR every single time?

[–]jjjeahh 0 points1 point ago

This is what happens when you give kids instagram. ಠ_ಠ

[–]BarbaricThirds -1 points0 points ago

Why do they go into hyperdrive at night?

[–]sweetgreggo -1 points0 points ago

If cabs were outlawed tomorrow in NYC there would no longer be a traffic problem.

[–]NiggaElk 0 points1 point ago

but ny'ers would have no one to drive us around :(

[–]Yoshokatana 0 points1 point ago

We should really outlaw any car that ISN'T a cab.

[–]Gamecube64 -1 points0 points ago

Oh now I want shake shack.
