Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

He is a friend of mine actually. My heart skipped when I opened this link. I haven't seen this picture in years. It was in our local newspaper in black and white the last time I saw it.

I feel like everyone looks like they're taking it in their own way; there's the man crying and the man behind him you mentioned, then the man in the front's and the man in the far back's sleepless looking red eyes, and the remaining man just looks like he's completely shut everything out. It's an image that just becomes more moving the more you look at it.

Sometimes I forget about the sacrifices Canada makes by having our back (even in pointless endeavors like the "War on Terror"). Regardless of politics, you guys are the best neighbors on the planet. I feel privileged to have Canada as a neighbor and ally.

\\this might seem trite, but it's impossible to overestimate the strength of the relationship between our countries. We agreed to contribute a major military endeavour (for us) towards Afghanistan not because we thought it was right, but because our best friend requested it.

The relationship between the USA and Canada is unmatched in the world. Here we have a country that could roll over us without a thought if they so chose, yet we have a relationship so close that it cannot be described as anything but friendship. Our economic relatoniship is vital for both countries, and it's almost entirely without acrimony. We've gone through phases like the Truman Era where we unabashedly hated eachother, yet we are still the best of friends.

When I was younger, I viewed the US as a mix between a threat and a friend. Now I see no difference between our countries. Our politics are both fucked, but the American people are my people. You are my brothers, in every sense that matters.

I may not have any impact on your situation, but I feel it deeply. As nationalistic as I am, I cannot think of a people whose future I care more for than Americans.

Seriously, Australia...Listen...

We love you and all and we're glad you've had our backs and we've had yours but really, we are never going over to your place for a BBQ. Too much lethal shit man. There's just too much. Even some of the trees can kill us. Come over for a beer if you want but for fucks sake don't invite us to go camping.

Canadians are our brothers and sisters. Australians are our crazy as fuck drinking buddy cousins. Brits are our older, slightly stuffy (but not if you know how to get them to let down their hair) cousins. I love them all.

[–]goneforaburton 2 points3 points ago

Getting Brits hair let down: Provide us tea on arrival. In the evening bring out some good beer (or show us where to find it) and tell us it's on.

I'll never forget when my history teacher in high school mentioned them as one of the best allies the US has ever had. I had never really thought of it. His claim was that Australia has backed us in every war, in some capacity, since World War I.

[–]makinganotheraccount 68 points69 points ago

it really does hurt me. I see how broken their government is, and it saddens me. Americans deserve better. Politics aside, the American Dream is one of the greatest moral accomplishments of humanity. After the politics, the acrimony and the gamesmanship, there is no country that has ever been so bold and so good as to put forth what the founding fathers of America did.

America is more than just a nation or an empire; America is an idea that improves all of us. The idea of America is one which propels us as a species towards a better place.

We are, as a species, indebted to America. This makes their current degradation only more depressing.

[–]FuLLMeTaL604 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow, I've never read something that captured my feelings toward America so well. I've always loved the American dream and I deeply admire the American founding fathers. Shit, I was born in Russian back when it was communist and now I am a Canadian citizen but I feel like I can relate more to the ideals and dreams of the founding fathers than Lennon and Stalin. America is like the rebirth of Athenian democracy and it was just as great as Greece was in its golden days but now we see its glory coming to an end unless something is done to stop the government from becoming overly corrupt.

You know I really appreciate your compassion and all Canadians for that matter. I live in Washington and I feel very welcome going to Vancouver. The people there are so friendly and insightful. They are very smart and hospitable. The war is something that probably 80% of us disapprove of and for the millitary to have our backs unconditionally means the world to me and I'm sure the rest of the American people. We are very misunderstood and to see posts like this males me proud to be your downstairs neighbor. Thank you.

The 'best neighbors' phrase is almost official now - I feel the same way. You might be interested to know that the US commemorated Canada's contributions on 9/11 at a number of locations on the 10th anniversary (Sept. 11, 2011). Various plaques were installed; after a description of local efforts (e.g. airports accepting stranded planes, families providing lodging), the following paragraphs appeared on all plaques:

The nearly 3000 innocent victims on September 11, 2001, included 24 Canadians, our friends and family. Canadians were with us in our darkest hour, as you always are.

Neither terrorism nor any adversity can conquer free peoples. And we are grateful to stand with the best neighbors any nation ever had. As together we look back, together we go forward.

One of these plaques is mounted in front of the Consulate General of the USA in Toronto.

Reading that poem gives me shivers every time. It is really beautifully written and very deep. For the lazy:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses, row on row, / That mark our place; and in the sky / The larks, still bravely singing, fly / Scarce heard amid the guns below. /

We are the Dead. Short days ago / We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, / Loved, and were loved, and now we lie / In Flanders fields. /

Take up our quarrel with the foe: / To you from failing hands we throw / The torch; be yours to hold it high. / If ye break faith with us who die / We shall not sleep, though poppies grow / In Flanders fields. /.

I'm Canadian and was in France chaperoning students on a trip when Chretien announced that Canada was not going to be participating in the Iraq war. I cannot put into words how proud and relieved I was. The news had to be relayed to us from our tour bus driver who was listening to the radio. The entire bus erupted in a cheer.

We didn't take over Kandahar until 2006. From 2001-2006 we had fewer troops than we did post-2006 in Afghanistan, mostly sitting around Kabul providing security.

Also, FYI: 2006 was the year Harper got his minority, but Hillier had been pushing for the "surge" long before the october election and Martin was the one who approved it.

Which is fucking irritating because our Canadian military is generally used for peacekeeping missions. Edit: from experience, I am talking about when I am deployed, mostly overseas, for disaster relief and various (low risk) reconnaissance or rescue missions. I hate seeing our military being put into the line of fire over a war we should not be in. It's just not us. And also the post under me is incredibly right, but you see my point.

[–]rounddown 56 points57 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is a moving photo, and highlights just how hard these sacrifices have been. But I think it's also important to recognize that the "peacekeeping" Canadian citizens envision is a bit of a myth, and that the military doesn't really embrace it as their purpose.

http://www.journal.forces.gc.ca/vo8/no1/maloney-eng.asp

The military is not primarily a peacekeeping tool. Our soldiers are trained to kill people. That might make some Canadians uncomfortable, but it's what makes our military an effective force.

[–]snarkinturtle 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, I have often heard this said. In terms of mandate and training, the Canadian military is for fighting wars. Peacekeeping, like disaster assistance and saving Toronto from snow, are secondary capabilities.

More-so it is a NATO war which invoked Article 5 of The North Atlantic Treaty after the attacks of 9/11:

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.

The European members of NATO freely signed this document along with Canada and the US in 1949 because all involved knew that it would be a deterrent to a Soviet attack into western Europe.

Kinda funny that it is now the US' fault that other nations agreed to join NATO during the Cold War and expected the US to defend their nations. Now since it was invoked due to an attack on American soil it is a sign of America bullying everyone around.

Loss of life on any side, especially ones cut short abruptly are especially hard.

I also feel for the innocent families and victims in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Israel and other places just as much as US or Canadian or other soldiers. Lives of US soldiers lost by IEDs. Lives of innocent Afghans like that massacre done by the US soldier a couple of months back.

Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Jew, Atheist or whatever, lives lost are sad and tragic, especially for those who know them closely.

We must not forget that if we fire a bullet or missile on someone it can be devastating.... both during wars and peace time.

[–]AskingOnce 26 points27 points ago

kind of irrelevant and will just be buried but whatever, I feel like typing.

A few years ago, my mother was competing at worlds in team Kata (Karate) in japan, and somehow they had lost the Canadian flag they were supposed to carry into the arena at the front of the Canadian team. In a panic, they were rushing around everywhere trying to find one, naturally, when this former military guy who came along steps up to her and tells her his story.

He was in a base in Afghanistan on patrol when he was suddenly shot by a sniper rifle. He passed out quickly and woke up two weeks later, when he woke up he said that his squad almost cried in relief. He literally had a brush with death. He stayed at the base until it was shut down, at which time he took the bases flag - not technically allowed, but no one stopped him.

Turns out he had this flag with him on the trip, it was like his good luck charm, and he pulls it out of his bag and wraps my mother in it. They went out and performed amazingly to represent Canada, but unfortunately lost.

Anyways, I thought it was kinda a cool story about Canadian soldiers. Irrelevant? Very. Still cool.

Canadian here.

Americans, don't think of this as a sacrifice for you.

This was a sacrifice for us.

Now, I'm a dirty liberal hippy atheist, but I understand the need for our armed forces.

More importantly, I understand the need for our partnership as neighbours on this great continent of ours.

You're our brothers. Not just in arms, and not just in trade. You're our brothers through the good and the bad, the thick and the thin, and either country would be poorer (in both the financial and spiritual sense) without the other.

So while we salute our armed forces in this thread, never forget to salute yours.

For better or worse, you're our brothers, and we'll always fight by your side.

Interesting: a bunch of people expressed their opposition to war, and a bunch of other people expressed their admiration for these men and whoever is in the coffin as heroes.

Are these statements inherently contradictory? If not, might they yield different results?

I didn't exactly experience this. But I watched the aluminum coffin containing my high school buddy who had been killed in Vietnam in 1969 being offloaded from the plane at Portland Airport. Then I saw him in an open coffin at the funeral home. Then I attended his burial and spent time with his heart broken family. WAR SUCKS!

My dad worked with Canadian troops in Kandahar. He may have made fun of them for being wishy-washy and saying "ish" too much (as in, "the meeting will start at 12ish"), but he will defend them tooth and nail if anyone says anything negative about them, and they would do the same for him. He has tons of respect for them (and so do I).

I'm going to spend some karma here so warm up those down-clickers.

I know Iraq was an illegal fiasco and distracted the US from it's mission. That mission was to unseat the Taliban in Afghanistan. The whole world was behind us when we went in and I truly believe it's a just cause. Religious extremism (any religious extremism) is dangerous and needs to be checked. Look at what's happening to little girls who dare to try to get an education, to young people who want to listen to western music, or to those who choose any faith other than Islam in Afghanistan. They supported bin Laden and continued to allow al Qaida to flourish and train. The madrassas were not teaching math and science, which you people are supposed to love, but religious doctrine that made all non-muslims "infidels" and enemies that don't deserve to live. Ask the average Afghan what they would do if they ever met a Jew.

I believe the work in Afghanistan, at least at first, is a just cause. To want a democratically-elected government in place with a competent police force and military are not evil intentions IMHO.

There. That's my opinion which will surely be met with a shit-ton of down arrows. Have at it. See you in hell.
