Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

The Grid.
A digital frontier.
I tried to picture clusters of information as they traveled through the computer.
What do they look like? Ships, motorcycles.
With the circuits like freeways.
I kept dreaming of a world I thought I'd never see.
And then, one day... I got in.

Yes.

The discord between the tranquil avenue coloring and the green and purple sky is disquieting.

needs more HDR

[–]atomicthumbs 7 points8 points ago

You know what? I tried. I downloaded this, threw it into Photoshop, and tried to run it through the tone mapping adjustment.

I could not make it look worse. I could destroy the image by messing with the exposure to make it too bright or too dark, or block out the highlights with saturation all the way up, but that was it. Literally everything else I tried made it look better.

No problem, I knew immediately it was his work. He has some amazing shots, and seems like a really cool fella. Seen him on a few tech shows.

Was just in Chicago on a school trip last week, the view from the top of the Sears tower looked EXACTLY like this. It's so beautiful up there.

its strange, i walk from right to left across that pic on my way to school every day. i pass the presidential towers and marvel at how tall they are. and then this picture shows how tiny they are compared to the sears tower. just awesome

If anyone is wondering, this is by Trey Ratcliff. He is an amazing photographer who does HDR perfectly. Check out his site StuckInCustoms for more great pictures. Here is more about this particular picture.

[–]IdLeicaRefund 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well if he does it like this one, it's far from perfect.

[–]Semajal -5 points-4 points ago

what would you say is wrong with this picture?

[–]IdLeicaRefund 7 points8 points ago

  • Lack of depth
  • Lack of contrast
  • Over the top tone mapping
  • Feel of the scene is lost
  • Implying it's bad to have parts of the photo that are black
  • Looks like someone threw up on the photo
  • Horizon not straight
  • Unnatural colours

[–]atomicthumbs 2 points3 points ago

plus, he popularized tone mapping and is indirectly responsible for the torrent of clown diarrhea that is most HDR photography today

[–]Semajal -5 points-4 points ago

  • depth? well the alignment of the roads draws your eye up to the horizon, I wouldn't say it didn't have depth.

  • not so much light/dark but the colour contrast is fantastic

  • so much of this is subjective but it doesn't seem over the top

  • What SHOULD the scene be? you won't catch specific detail from higher up, and if it is really dark you are a bit stuck on what to do

  • subjective again really, there is no exact rule book

  • not something I could think

  • okay this is slightly fair, but without having an original to crop it looks good either way.

  • well of course there are unnatural colours. Its a city... The blue/orange look works well, and is pretty accurate to how it would be if our eyes could see more. Bulk of it seems to come from snow on the buildings. What colour do you think a cityscape with sodium lights should be though?

HDR in any form gets so much hate on Reddit though. I however love this, especially the foreground detail on the buildings and the great use of the rule of thirds.

[–]sylas_zanj 1 point2 points ago

There is no depth beyond what can be achieved using a few of lines. The roads look like they are on a flat plane perpendicular to the viewer, just angled to produce the illusion of depth. Purely geometric depth, which visually foreshortens the scene from it's actual appearance. There is no sense that they actually recede into space aside from their apparent convergence.

[–]heypal121 0 points1 point ago

ladies and gentlemen, my alma mater is that cluster of buildings on the left side middle of the picture. that is the gorgeous university of illinois-chicago. this picture was taken from the sears/willis skydeck facing west.
