One head, two bodies (boingboing.net)

These guys are at the Mutter museum in Philadelphia, it's a whole museum of medical WTF. I did a sketch of them on my last visit
[–]deathraygun 10 points11 points12 points 6 months ago
My boyfriend and I went while visiting Philly because we heard it was a whole museum of natural oddities and mishaps. Ended up being a whole museum of jar fetuses. Still got our daily dose of wtf.
[–]cannables420 5 points6 points7 points 6 months ago
Any pics?
[–]ratjasper 62 points63 points64 points 6 months ago
Took my girlfriend here for her birthday. We're both artists. Most photography is forbidden in the Museum, unfortunately. I guess that it's primarily a policy to ensure that none of the delicate specimens are damaged by repeated flash exposure. Just as Lindsay Lohan's been.
[–]cannables420 24 points25 points26 points 6 months ago
Classic. Nice burn
[–]mrpayne99 14 points15 points16 points 6 months ago
[–]johnq-pubic 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
LOL Lindsay Lohan is a delicate specimen.
[–]gardenstate 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
This is my favorite museum.
[–]KingLatifah 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago

[–]Lillipout 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
What's the title? I'm guessing "Together Forever".
[–]joelnet 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
she never titled it. just gave it to me and said "here."
[–]spaceradish 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
I am extremely jealous of this. Your sister rules.
I'll let you know you guys appreciate her work.
[–]oed706 9 points10 points11 points 6 months ago
TIL Awesome_Oil_Painting is a girl.
[–]potentiallyoffensive 20 points21 points22 points 6 months ago
How long did it live?
[–]Rambis 7 points8 points9 points 6 months ago
sucks i have to come to almost the bottom of the comments to get something of substance.
[–]potentiallyoffensive 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Is that sarcasm?
[–]Rambis 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Nope.

The true horror must have been for the mother delivering the baby (babies?)... Oh God.
[–]Teotwawki69 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
Well, only one head to go through the birth canal, and that is the hardest part.
[–]HERO-SQUAD 17 points18 points19 points 6 months ago
Yes... the squeezing the large thing through the small hole is the hardest part. Not the whole, "oh God, why did I just give birth to something terrifying" part.
[–]gl0bals0j0urner 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago
For a normal infant the head is the hardest part. On this infant I'm going to presume pushing two bodies pressed together is a lot bigger and more painful than the head.
[–]burntryce 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago
I'm pretty sure the hardest part is the shoulders...
[–]alice-in-canada-land 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Not sure if you mean usually, or specifically in this case...
The head is the biggest, and most difficult to deliver, part of a baby. Once the head is out usually the baby just slips out. Shoulders can get stuck (in a worst case scenario the doctor or midwife can reach in and break a collar bone to get the baby out) but the shoulder joints can move and shift position. The head - not so much.
[–]burntryce 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
I'm going off of what I have heard from mothers, since I am not one. But I know that there are dangers of the shoulders getting stuck behind the pelvic bone even after the head is birthed. Which, in my opinion, kinds of lends itself to the shoulders being more difficult.
I wouldn't find it hard to believe that I was wrong about the shoulders being the hardest part of birth though. I'm just working off of second hand information here.
Either way, I would imagine that the difficulty with the shoulders would be dually accurate (excuse my pun) for this birth.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
I thought they'd usually cut through the woman's vagina first before hurting the baby, right?
[–]cakey138 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
But why give your baby, malformed or not, away to be put in a damn pickle jar?!
[–]cydril 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
This specimen may be very old. I can imagine a woman in the 1700/1800's being horrified by it.
The mother may have died also. That head looks like a bitch to pass.
Dear Allah I hope so...
[–]a2susan 16 points17 points18 points 6 months ago
For some reason, conjoined twins fascinate me!
[–]DoWhile 11 points12 points13 points 6 months ago
This seems to be more like one person with TWO bodies.
[–]a2susan 3 points4 points5 points 6 months ago
Even better... It could be the ultimate parasitic twin!
[–]Henipah 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
I think that's basically a semantic issue based on how many heads they have.
[–]baconsorcerer 8 points9 points10 points 6 months ago
He could literally fuck himself.
[–]JoeyHollywood -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
That was my thought. Puberty would have sucked!
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I disagree. Puberty would have been AWESOME.
[–]Chemthunder 8 points9 points10 points 6 months ago
As a new father of twins, the chance of this happening kept me up at night.
[–]Decky86 5 points6 points7 points 6 months ago
Freaky coincidence. Watching the Ricky gervais show and they were talking about freaks. And Steve corrected Karl's 'one face , two bodies' with 'one head, two bodies) exactly as I read the description of this!
[–]BrandyAlexander9 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
That was my first thought too. The man with one face.
[–]dress-up 5 points6 points7 points 6 months ago
So my mother wasn't lying... There ARE people who share a brain.
[–]aisleofview 5 points6 points7 points 6 months ago
Looks like somebody has a bit of a split personality.
[–]papalkombat 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
And one creepy motherfucker who keeps this on his desk.
[–]torokunai 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
lived for a while like that too
[–]fruitybeans 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
Probably had a really big smile.
[–]sarcastro74 8 points9 points10 points 6 months ago
Look like crabs, talk like people.
[–]Berkel 6 points7 points8 points 6 months ago
CRAB PEOPLE. CRAB PEOPLE.
[–]Nineboat 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
Fusion-dance gone wrong.
[–]THEMACGOD 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
That... That is one hell of an intelligent design.
[–]Howard_Beale 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
Sword fight!!!
[–]jackiewilsonsaid 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
The family-friendly sequel to CatDog
[–]spaceradish 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago*
I really wanted to see this guy when I went to the Mutter, but they weren't on display at the time. Still amazing to go through the cases of things people swallowed.
It sucks that you can't take pictures on the inside, but you can buy books filled with photos of all the neat stuff they DON'T have on display in the museum.
EDIT: I also wanted to see these doods there, but also not on display, two heads, one body. I have a couple tote bags and a shirt with an illustration of this skeleton on it. :)
[–]ps02210 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
Finally, someone for whom "Go F*** Yourself" makes sense....
[–]yanniD 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
fapping would be a whole new experience
[–]atomicUpdate 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Rick James would have loved having him around.
[–]dendritic 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago

[–]Gabe_b 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
Like something out of Aristophanes
[–]WhosThatGirl_ItsRach 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
It looks so....happy
[–]idrwierd 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
the beast with two backs!
[–]Joanbuggy 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I read this as One guy, two bodies and I was unsure how one guy could control two sets of arms, legs etc. Seeing people refer to them as two people makes more since.
[–]coolplate -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
"mmmhhh... biscuits with mustard."

What the fuckcuf eht tahW
[–]m4kecak3 -20 points-19 points-18 points 6 months ago
Occam's Razor - this could also be fake. It is surprisingly common for things on reddit to be fake.
[–]iswearimnorml 14 points15 points16 points 6 months ago
Actually, applying Occam's Razor (the simplest explanation is usually the correct one) to this photo would prove that it is real because that means you haven't thought about it enough to prove its fake.
[–]Teotwawki69 6 points7 points8 points 6 months ago
If the simplest explanation is the right one, then -- much easier to believe "birth defect" over "someone took the time and effort to mess around with a couple of baby skeletons."
[–]Secret7000 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago
I don't think you're quite getting Occam's Razor.
[–]Gold_Leaf_Initiative 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago
Right, but isn't it kind of irresponsible to assume it's fake JUST because it's on reddit? That's a logical fallacy.
[–]SchroeKatz 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
How it suggesting that it might be false Occam's Razor? Cases like these happen somewhat frequently
all it takes is a username and password
create account
is it really that easy? only one way to find out...
