I don't have time to research/links, so forgive me, but a month or so back on /r/askscience this discussion went on and basically it has to do with these MHC1 proteins on nucleated cells rather than traditional pheromones that would be detected by a vomeronasal organ.
Something to do with being attracted to people with genetically different MHC1 proteins, for evolutionary variance, except in the case of gestational females, in which case it would switch and they would be attracted to similarly genetic MHC1s to encourage familial caring for the child.
