People think Atheists are assholes for criticising religion because society has made it taboo to criticise religion. Which is unfortunate, because:

A) there's no good reason why religion should be given special privilege. Religion is the only part of a person's world view you can't criticise, satirise, or mock. Politics? You can discuss it all day, and criticise a person's political views and no one will call you a jerk. Nashville fans are free to mock my Red Wings and I nobody will call them a jerk. But then for some reason religion is off limits.

B) If we can't criticise religion we're telling ourselves faith is a good enough reason to believe in something. This will just make it difficult for us when we encounter groups or people who say "my faith tells me we should kill people". Because it's so taboo to criticise faith we then start to blame things that are not responsible for atrocities that were committed in the name of religion. Either that or we ignore the issue completely.

There are many people who think that the terrorists in the Middle East are acting the way they do because of political factors, or socio-economic factors, and of course neither are responsible.

Look at the 9/11 hijackers. They were wealthy and were educated in western universities; and if what they were doing was politically motivated because of occupation by foreign forces, we should be seeing Buddhist monks who suicide bomb Chinese government buildings.

We don't see monks blowing themselves up though because in Buddhism using violence isn't a part of their beliefs. In Monotheism, it is. These terrorist, the people who shoot up abortion clinics and the other religious crazies have spent large amounts of time talking to religious leaders, and studying religious texts to come to the conclusion that what they would do would be supported by a divine being.

So feel free to criticize /r/atheism for being hostile towards religion, but just know, if you do you're contributing problems we see on a global scale.

Everyone knows he Bruins are the one true religion! Praise be to Bourque and the Holy Grce of Our Saviour Bobby Orr! Red Wings are heretics!

"So feel free to criticize /r/atheism for being hostile towards religion, but just know, if you do you're contributing problems we see on a global scale."

So criticizing r/atheism (a subreddit full of 20 year olds on a site full of 20 year olds) means I am responsible for shooting up an abortion clinic or blowing shit up. That's a hyperbole.

I never said that.

If you criticise /r/atheism or any other atheists for being hostile towards religion you are simply reinforcing the idea that it should be taboo to criticise religion.

There are many things you can criticise r/atheism for, but its hostility towards religion is not a valid one.

[–]sparklespice -1 points0 points ago

Sorry i should have been more clear. I believe that criticizing how a group of twenty year olds criticizes their aunts or grandmothers over facebook is fine. I mean I'm not religious but i can still be critical of any group treats those with different beliefs.

You can't say "There are many things you can criticise r/atheism for, but its hostility towards religion is not a valid one." That is wayyyy too absolute, and it sounds like something Christian group would say. So stop dealing in absolutes. You have every right to be hostile towards religions, and I have every right in being critical and logical in how I perceive the manifestation of your hostility.

I don't think what I'm saying is like something fundie Christians say, because I'm not claiming to have moral authority over anyone, I'm not claiming that my words are inspired by the supernatural.

Do I think that you should have the right to criticise r/atheism for being hostile towards religion? Yes I do. But I think criticising us for our hostility towards religion isn't a criticism that holds much weight.

Society as a whole claiming "you shouldn't criticise religion" is dangerous. As I pointed out before making it taboo to criticise religion gives room for fundamentalists to spread their message. Making it taboo to criticise religion gives weight to the claims of extremists, as that taboo makes society accept faith as a good enough reason to believe in things.

Absolutely classic quote. I would upvote this despite the fact that I've seen it several times were I able to read it in a format that didn't make my eyes bleed. But thanks to the giant red box with white letters, I'm sad that I can only give you one downvote.

your wish is my command!

“I’ll tell you what you did with Atheists for about 1500 years. You outlawed them from universities or any teaching careers, besmirched their reputations, banned or burned their books or their writings of any kind, humiliated them, seized their properties, arrested them for blasphemy. You dehumanized them with beatings and exquisite torture, gouged out their eyes, slit their tongues, stretched, crushed or broke their limbs, tore off their breasts if they were women, crushed their scrotums if they were men, imprisoned them, stabbed them, disemboweled them, hung them, burnt them alive. And you have nerve enough to complain to me that I laugh at you.” Dr. Madalyn M. O’Hair

Heh, OK, since you went through the trouble, I'll go ahead and change my vote.
