Mmmmm oooooo mmm ahhh ggggg -Mr. Bean

[–]VikingMop 3 points4 points ago

Kinda weird to think about the long monologue he had in the first movie. :p After being used to not hearing Mr Bean speak, my young mind was blown when I first watched him speak for several minutes in-character.

Then I discovered how Rowan Atkinson is the exact opposite of Mr Bean and his other comedic roles, which still blows my mind.

[–]Super-Buu-5 8 points9 points ago

That face he drew over the painting scared the shit out of me when I was younger

[–]jimicus 1 point2 points ago

Then I discovered how Rowan Atkinson is the exact opposite of Mr Bean and his other comedic roles, which still blows my mind.

Not that unusual. Most comic performers are very smart cookies, very highly educated. Seriously, think of any comic performer - whether it's an actor or a standup comedian - and look into their history. 8 times out of 10 you'll find they went to top universities.

[–]VikingMop 1 point2 points ago

Not saying I expected Rowan Atkinson to be stupid, just to show some of that comedic talent outside his acting. Comedians normally make jokes whenever they can, that's their thing.

But Rowan is as dry as a stick. You would never expect him to be a comedian if you only watched an interview with him.

[–]Combatwombat1337 52 points53 points ago

By Mr.Bean I presume you mean Blackadder

[–]fizdup 10 points11 points ago

And I think you mean Lord Blackadder.

[–]letsgotowar 5 points6 points ago

And I think you mean Captain Blackadder.

[–]Kornstalx 5 points6 points ago

Good morning, Darling!

[–]yelo_canu[S] 11 points12 points ago

I know what you mean, I love Blackadder. But no I was more implying a contrast between a smart statement from a dumb character, not playing the game of which RA character is better.

[–]knighmare 6 points7 points ago

Well in the first season/series (whatever) of blackadder he was tremendously stupid

[–]whatupnig -3 points-2 points ago

But it wasn't a statement... It is a question.

[–]philosomorodon 4 points5 points ago

Or can it.

[–]Lurking_Grue 2 points3 points ago

By Blackadder I presume you mean that rubbery faced guy on Not the 9 O'Clock News.

[–]abbiistabbii 1 point2 points ago

Well fuck you, that's Johnny English.

[–]scramtek 26 points27 points ago

Rowan Atkinson motherfucker!
Mr. Bean is only one of the characters he created. And not his best work!

[–]bubbadumptruck 12 points13 points ago

That's right man! I prefer to see him as Mr. Blackadder.

If any of you out there in redditland haven't seen the series, and are a fan of British humo(u)r, I recommend it highly. You'll also see Hugh Laurie in it, as a much younger man.

[–]I_Lyk_Dis 1 point2 points ago

I agree he deserves the respect, but I also appreciate OP's intentional juxtaposition of the smart quote vs dumb character.

[–]Scary_ 1 point2 points ago*

This is his best work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw8dW9Hyno0

It's 70 minutes long, sit back and enjoy (although it does have some odd ad placing)

[–]Persdear 2 points3 points ago

It's really hard to see his face an not crack a smile.

[–]Orange_Drink 3 points4 points ago

Rowan Atkinson - Amazing Jesus:

[–]fizdup 5 points6 points ago

I think (but I am not sure, I am six beers in to be honest) that when Mr Atkinson said this, it was part of a campaign to prevent the last government of the UK passing a law that made "inciting rligious hatred" (those are my quotes, not from a real source) a crime. His point, along with other noteworthy comics, like the lovely Stephen Fry, was that the law, as it was worded, made it a crime to poke fun at religions. I personally think that all religions are even funnier than Black Adder the Third, but what would I know? (that sentence is really long and has too many brackets and commas in it)

EDIT: Six beers and half a glass of wine and the whole of Taken starring Liam Neeson (Damn that movie was awesome) in.

[–]8bitmorals 4 points5 points ago

Fun fact, He is an Electrical Engineer

[–]viramonster 4 points5 points ago

:D

I would have never guessed that! I am an electrical engineer myself, proud to be his colleague.

[–]Isterpuck 0 points1 point ago

Upvoted in the name of electrical engineering!

[–]ryr5000 10 points11 points ago

Then he went and brushed his teeth with the windshield wiper fluid of his mini because he was late for the dentist. Bean is pure comic genius

[–]yelo_canu[S] 1 point2 points ago

Not according to some in this thread.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

Meh. Bean was OK. The first time you see an episode, you laugh, but that's it. Blackadder was genius, you can watch the same episode many times over and not get bored with it.

[–]VikingMop 12 points13 points ago

I think what was so amazing with Mr Bean was how everyone could enjoy it. Not just kids and adults, but people from every part of the world.

Humor can often be limited by nationality and style, like some people aren't into "british humor", and some jokes can be lost in translation. Mr Bean avoided all that, it was something everyone could enjoy, and that's why it gained such a massive popularity worldwide.

[–]Darthcaboose 3 points4 points ago

The big thing for Mr. Bean was that the humor was pretty international; non-English speakers could still appreciate the antics he would get himself in. As such, many English speakers will find his humor fairly "basic", but meh, he still makes me laugh.

[–]yelo_canu[S] 2 points3 points ago

Yep, Blackadder was brilliant comedy.

[–]thejynxed 0 points1 point ago

"And I think I shall be called...BLACK ADDER!!!"

[–]Scary_ 0 points1 point ago

I remember seeing the very first episode go out (without much hype) and it was amazing. The same with the first few which were even better because they spaced them out over a few years as specials. Then it kinda got tired and ran out of ideas.

Incidently, his original stand up tour from where the Bean character originated is a classic and well worth a watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw8dW9Hyno0

[–]jimicus 0 points1 point ago

Accidental genius in places, particularly if you watch the "making of" bits on the DVD.

The finale of Series 4 (spoiler alert) apparently looked like a disaster when they first viewed it. You could see the set shaking because it was so cheaply made and all the characters trying to die seriously and doing a terrible job.

By this time they'd pretty much run out of money, which made re-writing and re-shooting that scene impossible. The idea of slowing it right down, mixing to the poppy field and playing the theme tune very slowly on a piano was borne out of desperation.

[–]Jagyr 1 point2 points ago

Some in his thread need to have their fucking heads checked.

[–]jetson215 2 points3 points ago

Is it weird that I said "damn he's kinda sexy" when I saw the photo? If it matters, I'm a heterosexual man.

[–]nofaith 4 points5 points ago

It matters, lol

[–]ILOVEGLADOS 2 points3 points ago

Just when I thought I couldn't love this man anymore. Rowan Atkinson was my hero. Now, he is my idol <3

[–]burstofsuddenclarity 1 point2 points ago

Take advice on life from Mr. Brean! Winning!

[–]Odysseus66 1 point2 points ago*

I couldn't agree more sir.

[–]nofaith 1 point2 points ago

Fucking Blackadder is the man

[–]clutterbang 1 point2 points ago

I'm just about to hit MID TWENTIES but I still remember back to when I saw Rowan Atkinson outside of the Mr. Bean role for the first time.

CRAYY SHIT..

[–]FCBSERIS 1 point2 points ago

Not the nine o'clock relevant:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asUyK6JWt9U

[–]youhavemyaxes 1 point2 points ago

mr. bean why do people still believe in hateful and intolerant religion? magic

[–]sottaly 1 point2 points ago

I feel like he's speaking of radicalism more than religion.

[–]Buffalox 2 points3 points ago

Yes because when he says religion, he probably meant something else by it.

Like when I say car, I mean my personal Jet. /s

[–]sottaly 0 points1 point ago

Yeah and when your girlfriend comes home from work angry and says she's fine, she's really fine.

[–]whiteshado 0 points1 point ago

WTF! He cannot speak!

[–]newcarcaviarfourstar 0 points1 point ago

That was a difficult way to say nothing

[–]LemurFace 0 points1 point ago

...what

[–]PoorlyTimedPhraseGuy 0 points1 point ago

I know I've seen this at least 4 times in the last month. I just know it.

[–]ericn1300 0 points1 point ago

nothing

[–]SomethingEvil12 0 points1 point ago

Not many people care about religion here as you all know, America just needs time to just get over it themselves, this time will come.

[–]neonnonagon 0 points1 point ago

If I see one more of these quotes with a background with the original quoter, I'm going to firebomb reddit's servers.

[–]Sensible1 0 points1 point ago

Atheist Republic? I don't know, I think we should be called the United Republic of Atheists.

[–]ZombieLiquid 0 points1 point ago

Read it in his voice. This always happens to me.

[–]Pyromaniac605 0 points1 point ago

Atkinson's voice or Mr. Bean's voice?

[–]scottles 0 points1 point ago

Rowan is no dummy he is very much on the ball and extremely successful. However, it is ironic when truth and wisdom come to our fucked up society through someone who has become such an icon of odd. Not to say the horror lies with him but with our delusional society where fucked up and mentally ill have become the norm and accepted. Let's have our good looking news anchor in the red tie and expensive suit tell us of morals and how to think about things let's have our sexually suppressed clergy dictate our moral standards. Hey when's the meteor due? We don't deserve the stars.

[–]shortcakeinventor 0 points1 point ago

But they've believed it for a long time, so it's ok. Just, like, leave them alone.

[–]Ikarr0s 0 points1 point ago

Tell that to Circlejerk.

[–]ActuallyThatGuy 0 points1 point ago

Hell yes, he lives in my town!

[–]canthidecomments 0 points1 point ago

Mr. Bean is anglin' for a beheadin'.

[–]Rokhmal112358 0 points1 point ago

This sounds like justification the Catholic church might have used back in the day to put on passion plays, inciting violence against Jews. That being said, I'm going to go find my Mr. Bean dvd set.

[–]karlrocks23 0 points1 point ago

So sick of seeing reposts in this subreddit..

[–]SuperHooah 0 points1 point ago

Now r/athiesm, I know we don't like to hate on Christianity in general, but aren't the teachings of it pretty supportive of human rights?

[–]CDubAhYou 0 points1 point ago

Rowan Atkinson is a Catholic. Just saying.

[–]mbrowne 7 points8 points ago

Got a citation for that? His wikipedia outrage says he was brought up Anglican, and the impression I get from watching his work on tv is that he is atheist.

[–]CDubAhYou 1 point2 points ago

I fear I may have jumped the gun know his family is Christian, I think you are right.

[–]yelo_canu[S] 5 points6 points ago

Well then Catholicism needs moar Rowan.

[–]Teslanaut 4 points5 points ago

Rowan Catholic? A branch of Roman Catholic?

[–]Syn7axError 4 points5 points ago

In my experience, Christians hate other Christians a lot more than atheist hate Christians. I'm not a good source by any means, but regardless Christians have always hated other Christians.

[–]rosts 2 points3 points ago

I've always been surprised by this. The difference might be minuscule in the greater perspective, yet this slight tuning of the same religion has cost countless lives.

[–]Syn7axError 1 point2 points ago

To be fair, I've seen some massive differences between some types of the same religion. Like, one allows pedophilia and one doesn't, and they're arguing over that fact, not on the grand scale of things. It looks silly from outside, but it makes more sense once you see all the details.

That being said, it's not worth killing people over.

[–]immortal_mechanism 2 points3 points ago*

I wouldn't say atheists hate Christians, but they hate their beliefs and attitudes. There are Christians that hate other Christians, and then there is the Christians that try to promote peace and earthly brotherhood, then there is the collective of Christians, Jews, Muslims, atheists, and government officials who do not like them because they interfere with their agendas and gang up to kill the peace-loving Christians. And it's not just peace-loving Christians, but all peace-loving religious and irreligous groups. At this point, it doesn't seem like religion is the problem. It's people.

edit: grammar

[–]Syn7axError 1 point2 points ago

It's not that atheists hate Christianity at its core or hate all Christians or that it applies to all atheists, but as a general rule, a lot of people here hate a lot of aspects of Christianity.

[–]immortal_mechanism 2 points3 points ago

From what I've seen, these are the aspects people here hate the most, although I've noticed that the majority of these aspects are those of fundies:

  1. They believe God exists.

  2. In doing so, they reject science.

  3. They take the Bible too literally.

  4. They accept things they are told that are not in Bible and are unaware that the teachings contradict because they don't actually read the Bible.

  5. They refuse to think on their own so they have a priest or preacher do it for them. Thus, they receive the bigotry from the clergy that leads to hatred of various people.

  6. They don't act in line with their own moral code and act like they do.

  7. They preach to others, but their method is really not preaching, but telling other people they will go to hell if they don't convert.

  8. They're stupid.

I'm actually a Christian, but I hate a lot of these aspects too.

P.S. I hope you're not mad because I didn't put tl;dr.

[–]Syn7axError 0 points1 point ago

See what I mean? Christians hate that too, and from my experience, they hate it more than atheists. Again, I'm aware that anecdotal counts for near-nothing.

[–]Syn7axError 0 points1 point ago

Ouch.

I've always wondered who makes the jokes that spread around everywhere without an author. That being said, it's a good joke.

[–]linusgel -1 points0 points ago

Word

[–]MarkaDreher -2 points-1 points ago

Acting is the art of lying.

And who is the Father of all lies?

Whatever an actor told you to do.

I would do the opposite.

Yours,

Mark Dreher

[–]mymindisacircus -1 points0 points ago

cool, mr. bean is an atheist. that's great news. get it over it.

[–]Gravyness -1 points0 points ago

I hate religious because they hate me. And without me, who will be their demons?

[–]PullOutBoy -1 points0 points ago

because ultra liberal feminist pussies thats why!

[–]logifal -1 points0 points ago

This is different than hating and mocking people which you guys do so often.

[–]Hot_Soup -1 points0 points ago

Because you should be inciting rational thought where you take every situation and person at their own merits, not instilling hatred.

[–]Zachlamydia -3 points-2 points ago

It's disgusting. One religion frequently incites intense dislike of another religion because they think the activities or teachings of that other religion are so outrageous, irrational or abusive of human rights that they deserve to be intensely disliked. It's a good thing us nonreligious folk can justify our counterproductive "intense dislike" through reactionary bombast; the world is saved.

[–]SmilinGoat -3 points-2 points ago

I cant stand you as a comedian, but I like you as a person.
