    Here's what we did to eventually beat that fucking rat:

    Start the game with two players, have one commit suicide in the early levels.

    From level 3, warp to level 5, from level 6 warp to level 8, get to level 10 (it'll probably take you 100 hours of gameplay to do this without losing more than 2-3 lives) and on the map screen, have the other player reenter the game. Have him basically punch the rat against the wall so he can't progress (the camera will pan with the one going down the tower, so you'll have to have good internal timing). Probably only necessary on the last portion of the level.

    Die on level 11.

    Honestly, I only got to level 12 once, and I had one life left. Died immediately.

    I don't remember the NES version playing like that. The only thing you really had to do was punch the rat to make it bounce over the hole or turn around if it tried to pass you. There were some places where letting the rat run its track was better for you such as where it was shorter to turn around than to bounce off the walls.

    But seriously, fuck Clinger-Winger lvl 11.

    No way dude, TMNT the underwater level with the electric kelp. That shit nurtured the inner gamer rage inside of me. At least you could beat this level after a few tries but in TMNT, I have my doubts that its even possible to win at that game.

    Large sections of the Technodrome's floor were nothing but spikes. Even with Donatello enemies took multiple hits to kill.

    The final hallway leading to Shredder is narrow and filled with Space Men (not sure on their real name), which look like astronauts with jetpacks and laser rifles. They are too tall to duck under and their lasers are too strong to destroy with weapons before they harm you.

    Fuck that final hallway.

    Fuck it HARD.

    ...but it's still easier than Battle Toads.

    I used boomerangs and inched my way towards the end. If I was lucky sometimes one of the space men would disappear.

    I guess I can count that as one of the times that a game glitch helped me.

    Ninja Gaiden 1-3 are all about glitching enemies into disappearing so you can make jumps etc....

        Back in the day I was the only one who could get past this level, and I almost beat Battletoads once. Still, it would have been way more fun if this level weren't so early in the sequence of the game as to remove any newbs from having a chance.

        Never made it past this board with anyone else. This game requires donkey-kong like skill.

            The problem with comics as it is, is that one doesn't know the author's preferences when it comes to Reddit-scale visitors. For example Katie of Awkward Zombie whose M.E. Comic was posted here prefers it rehosted as long as the attribution isn't removed. Her hosting is somewhat lightweight and doesn't take a load of visitors well.

            And judging from the load speed of magicalgametime.com it isn't faring well even though it was just linked from the comments. It's sluggish but at least it's up.

            I think the only thing to really be mad about here is that the author didn't put up the place to find his work at along with his signature.

                  No, I finished the NES game. I remember the electrocution, and the technodrome. I definitely remember killing the technodrome and also that the final boss fight (Shredder) was really underwhelming.

                  The Technodrome was doable, if you went into it well armed with scrolls.

                  Preparation was key in that game.

                  A few times I died on purpose facing Shredder, simply because I wanted to see what his gun would do. (And it does do something awesome.) But all my continues would be wasted trying to defeat that level without special weapons.

For example, he was good enough at Blaster Master to begin working on a speedrun. (In fact, this topic reminded me to go searching for the videos of that since his run was beaten but it'd be nice to revisit his part in that history.)

                  The dam level? Shit, son... the dam level was when the game was still "fun".

                  The next level was where shit got stupid. You were in the turtle van, and had to wander all over the goddamn city looking for a rope so you could swing across ONE gap in between two buildings. And when I say city, I mean big effing city, with lots of buildings that netted you nothing but a quarter pizza for completing.

                  The bright side, was if you went way the fuck out of your way on that level, you could rescue one turtle.

                  Chances are, it would be the turtle you lost attempting to get to the rescue area.

                  The next level, which I only made it to twice (in my entire childhood gaming career) was some sort of military base with treadmills and spikes. If that wasn't bad enough, in some of the areas you were racing ahead of spikes falling from the ceiling in convoluted jumping puzzles... and we KNOW how well jumping was handled in that game.

                  So, I've only made it to level 5 - the caves on an emulator. It also sucks.

                  Level 6 was the technodrome. There were parts that took me OVER 50 tries with the save states/load states. At some point, I think I gave up because I sure as hell don't remember the ending.

                    I hate that level SOOOOOOO MUCH.... it's the third level in the game (if you count the 'bonus' level) and I only got past it once. I don't know how many times I tried.

                    So I actually created my account just to post in this thread... All of you talking about how this level is so hard have never gotten past it or seen the rest of it. Not only are all the levels past six significantly harder, there's a level that is essentially the same (you ride a vehicle going constantly forward) where the things you have to dodge are RANDOM and come perpendicular to your movement. So yeah, Battletoads is hard, but only a couple people in this thread have actually got anywhere. BTW the I did beat the game. Last non-boss level is really really bad 3D. Look it up.

                    Random question. I have a very vivid memory of once playing as the orangish battletoad and for some reason he had a bandage on his leg. I think it only ever happened once for me. Anyone know anything about this or was I hallucinating? I have no idea how it happened. I'm looking at the pictures now and I didn't remember the spikes on their legs, but it didn't look like that. I hope someone else knows what I'm talking about.

                    Played this as a child. My sister and I never got past that stupid speeder bike stage. Within the last year I found a play-through of Battletoads on Youtube, and holy crap there was so much more to that game. It kept on going for so long. The stage design was merciless.
