I remember going out of town for a week and dropping my dog off at a kennel. He was getting old by then, it was just a year before he died. Just before I left I saw him in the exam room, with five or six people around him. They were doing other things, but of course he thought they were all there to pay attention to him, and was appropriately excited enough to not even miss me.

The fight had been long and hard. The El Cuidad gang had been firmly entrenched in the area around Tuxpan for many years, stealing, raping, and murdering the townsfolk. The corrupt local government was powerless to stop them, as they were either firmly in the pockets of the gang, or they feared for their own safety. A small town like that doesn't attract the attention of the Federales, so no assistance ever came. Until one day, a stranger walked in to town. His hair was light and shaggy, but he smiled, a warm, happy smile. The gang didn't notice him at first, until their members started to disappear. Soon the gang was running scared, as they found bodies of their enforcers and observers lying everywhere, with the same series of wounds; chewed ankles.

The final battle was a true epic, something worthy of a Sergio Leone movie. Gunshots, mixed with screams and a terrible howling was all that was heard by the inhabitants of Tuxpan, who sat cowering behind shuttered windows and locked doors. With his dying breath, the leader of the El Cuidads cursed this smiling stranger, even as he lay bleeding in the town square. But the town was free, and the people were safe.

The celebration was the largest seen in the town since Mexican Independence. Women gave prayers of thanks to the Virgin Mary. Old men wept openly. The church bells rang for a full day and a full night. A massive parade was organized, with the hero and liberator of the town heading it, heralded by the cheers of the crowd, "Perro bueno!! Perro beuno!!"

    In old folklore regarding my home town there is the little story of the arrival of Otto I, founder of the holy roman empire. They threw roses on the path where he was supposed to arrive. Unknown to the people of the town he had to take another route because of flooding... or something. So instead of him a young miller and his donkey came along trampling on the roses and minding their own businesses. To this day a fountain remembers this old little story.

    You can quite clearly see the flag of the Vatican in the picture.
