Except that NDT would have said "you're," not "your."

[–]sharkbait_oohaha 7 points8 points ago

Thank you for being as pedantic as I am.

http://i.imgur.com/AKGxE.jpg I apologize in for my crime of the incorrect use of "your" in place of "you're." As an offering I present a fixed version for the internet. If the internet is still not pleased I will gladly plead guilty and accept the karma death sentence.

Its too late. The damage is done. The theists win.

[–]cabbages 1 point2 points ago

You even fixed the "its." Well done!

[–]Crazy_G1raffe 1 point2 points ago

"This and the difference between affect and effect are like the only two things he's really serious about."

[–]elbruce 0 points1 point ago

Much better.

You still either ended a sentence with a comma instead of a period or capitalized you're for no reason lol

Came here to say this.

This threw me off for a second or two

[–]Ericyoung0322[S] 1 point2 points ago

Heard this on an interview with him on the nerdist podcast and thought I'd share with you guys.

Your wording is off. That is regarding discussions about intelligent design. Here's the one regarding intelligent design itself.

"And what comedian configured the region between our legs—an entertainment complex built around a sewage system?" NDT, Death By Black Hole p 360

[–]Ericyoung0322[S] 1 point2 points ago

Exactly, the conversation was about the hubris of people who claim that "I can't understand it, thus no one can, thus God did it." He's done a lot about why intelligent design is wrong. But this was more about realizing that arguing with someone who ignores science in light of faith isn't worth arguing with.

[–]elbruce 1 point2 points ago

I understand why he would be soft on them, but the fact remains that he's too soft on them. Many of those people who "want to believe what they want to believe" are trying to restrict the rights of others, redefine history and rewrite our democratic institutions. I cannot let that slide.

He's made a point to speak out when they do try and force creationist views in school. He's said before that no scientists has ever tried to go into a church and change the church goers views based on science. So the religious people should stay out of the science labs and classrooms. He's certainly no Richard Dawkins though. He doesn't go after the religious or give whole lectures on just religion. And it's probably for this exact reason, you can't change a religious persons beliefs by telling them facts and science. A religious persons views aren't based on evidence but on faith, so whats the worth arguing with them?

I like his approach. I could do without him complaining about the approach of others.

Every major major movement in society needs two kinds of voices - think of them as the "good cop" and "bad cop." Martin Luther King wouldn't have been nearly as effective with his nonviolent approach if there hadn't also been Malcolm X stating that if it came down to it, he advocated African-Americans obtaining their rights "by any means necessary." We need the whole continuum of addressing theists in order to eliminate the assumption that theism is the normative standard in America.

[–]gorange 1 point2 points ago

Let's be clear, this is a case AGAINST militant, evangelical atheism. All of the memes that we all congratulate each other on around here are fine and dandy, but they're just self congratulatory, and don't convert new people to the cause or reveal any new insights. And sometimes they're mean-spirited...

[–]biscuitoman 0 points1 point ago

Sadly true.

[–]lillake 0 points1 point ago

The man speaks the truth, sadly.

[–]nicoman37 0 points1 point ago

I'm willing to put my grammar nazi ism away for a moment because I love Neil as much as I love grammar.

[–]bambulance 0 points1 point ago
