REAL STORY: This house is in Cambridge, MD on the Eastern Shore, (birthplace of Harriet Tubman and me.) The historical society would not let the owner do some repairs, so in response and to make a point, he painted the house this way in protest. It is on Locust Street.

PROOF: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/27935

[–]oldsillybear 2 points3 points ago

So... why isn't the picture of the BLACK HOUSE all over Facebook today?

Because this is America, that's why!!!

(and according to this the story has nothing to do with whether or not he was allowed to hang a flag outside, but that doesn't make for such a patriotic FB status)

[–]edouble77 9 points10 points ago

I drive down Locust Street every time I go home to visit my parents. There are flags hanging everywhere. The town has flags hanging every where. This had absolutely nothing to do with not being able to hang a flag.

"Homeowners who choose to paint their houses with non-traditional colors risk running afoul of their neighbors and local politicians, but owner and contractor Branden Spear never set out to paint his restored Victorian properties with colors that were out of the norm. But when local building inspectors told him that the windows he chose to restore the home weren’t up to historical code, he got angry. “It would have cost one-third of the restoration budget just to install those windows,” says Spear. Then he realized the building code said nothing about what colors the old Victorians should be painted. So as a show of his anger, and as a protest against what he says are unfair regulations, he painted one home all black, and the adjacent home with an American flag theme. They’ve become something of a tourist attraction since, and even though Spear is still at odds with local government officials, he has proven one point – that paint and color can also be used as protest"

TL;DR Basically it is a big FUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKKK YOU!! to the town for not letting him install the windows he wanted on the property. Not EXTREME PATRIOTISM

[–]aducknamedjoe 1 point2 points ago

giving a government a big "fuck you" IS extreme patriotism.

[–]oldsillybear 0 points1 point ago

thank you for this! Truth that is more involved than a FB status. LOL.

[–]the_raptor 23 points24 points ago

Bush Jr. passed a law that forbade homeowners associations from forbidding the display of the flag. They might still whine about flag poles but IIRC in most cases judges normally rule in favour of the right to erect flag poles as well.

[–]ckallas2 4 points5 points ago*

Well I wish the person in the picture had acquainted him/herself with the law before creating an eyesore for the entire neighborhood.

Edit: Now that I know the reasons behind this picture I'm more apt to agree with the homeowner's decision. Here is the real story.

[–]ConfederENT 3 points4 points ago

God at what point in life did you become so bitchy?

[–]UrbanPharmer 4 points5 points ago

Let me give you my ex wife's phone number - call and repeat this same sentence to her please.

[–]bacon_taste 2 points3 points ago

I'm unemployed and bored. Can I do it?

[–]ativa 15 points16 points ago

Good for him.

[–]eatthebear 10 points11 points ago

If his neighborhood has rules against flags, I wouldn't be surprised if they have rules against this as well.

[–]phillip6661313 1 point2 points ago

They will find a way to make him get rid of that too.

[–]gregocebr 5 points6 points ago

That is AWESOME!!! and I am not even American!

[–]renegadebetty 2 points3 points ago

I want to know where this is.

[–]ethanwc 14 points15 points ago

My guess? England.

[–]0mudkipz 2 points3 points ago

by the looks of it, I would guess somewhere in London Downtown.

[–]micahdee 0 points1 point ago

I believe this is the house in Lander Wyoming...though I can't find proof of it, (if it is the same house that I remember) it happened in 2001 and I was 12. What I do know is that people were pissed...if it is the same house.

[–]ckallas2 18 points19 points ago*

Spite filled patriotism with a jingoist crust? This is the American way.

Edit: This isn't even about hanging a flag, it was another unreliable facebook FW:FW:RE:FW. This post farther down the page explains what this house was all about.

[–]The_Revival 1 point2 points ago

You got all that from this picture? That didn't include the visage of the owner of the house? As he responded to an infringement against his right to free speech?

[–]ckallas2 -5 points-4 points ago

It wasn't an infringement in my view because he signed a homeowners association contract which forbade the hanging of a flag. If there was no contract and an official government entity told him to take down the flag then it would be infringement.

As to how I came to the conclusion that the owner was spite filled: s/he painted her/his house the colors of the American flag because her/his HA didn't want a flag there in the first place (spite). The home owner probably wouldn't paint the flag (or try to hang it) without patriotism. Jingoism? That was a psychological shot in the dark I took because of the aggression of an action like repainting your whole house to disrespect a contract you signed.

Hypothetical: if a homeowner's association limited the size of the flag that was to be waved would that be wrong in your opinion?

[–]PurpleCapybara 2 points3 points ago

One does not necessarily have to sign a contract, or even be aware that a property is part of a homeowner's association before you buy. Plus, if the board decides to be belligerent, here's how it works: you hire a lawyer, they hire a lawyer, and the 2 talk. If you run out of money, game over. If they run out of money, everyone's homeowner association fees go up, their lawyer can resume talking and all your neighbors hate you.
Having said that, a majority of homeowners associations exist to prevent obvious eyesores, plant flowers in common areas and maintain neighborhood playgrounds. Stuff like that.

[–]ckallas2 -1 points0 points ago

None of this seems unreasonable. One of the questions that should be asked when buying a house is "how is the homeowner's association?".

I just don't know why this would be a big deal to somebody.

[–]PurpleCapybara 1 point2 points ago

Not a big deal - but particularly first-time homeowners might not know to even ask the question.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I'm gunna paint my car up like this and intentionally ram anyone driving anything foreign.

[–]Benny_the_Jew 0 points1 point ago

This was hillarious.

[–]powerlloyd -5 points-4 points ago

Highly underrated comment.

[–]Should_Not_Comment[!] 3 points4 points ago

If he's so pro-freedom why did he join a homeowner's association, the primary goal of which is to limit people's freedom in order to keep property values up? This story is the perfect metaphor for what's going wrong with this country. "I only wanted to vote away other people's rights because I didn't think they'd affect me!"

[–]PurpleCapybara 1 point2 points ago

Typically, you don't get a choice whether or not you're in a homeowner's association. The neighborhood could already have one, and it's part of owning the house. You may or may not know about it before purchasing, and if you don't, the answer is always "well, you should have done more research before buying".
On top of that, you could be in a homeowner's association for decades without issue, but then a new group of people takes over the board with a very different philosophy about whether or not to enforce which rules (many of which are antiquated) and when to levy fines and deploy lawyers.

[–]bluematter08 1 point2 points ago

Homeowner's associations are the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. I bought the house I should be allowed to make it an eyesore if I want.

[–]bonzo323 7 points8 points ago

I want to move in next door and salute his house everyday, as I recite the pledge of allegiance. Using my free hand to flip off the neighbors that told him to remove the flag in the first place.

[–]timetide 9 points10 points ago

or the homeowners agreement he signed when he bought the house. but you know, why hold people liable to the contracts they sign.

[–]ethanwc 7 points8 points ago

Alright, Hitler.

[–]brosenfeld -2 points-1 points ago

What the hell does that even mean? Hitler was a contract breaker.

[–]justanothercommenter -2 points-1 points ago

Obama is too.

Fucked over bondholders in the GM bailout.

[–]celestialwolf 2 points3 points ago

Sorry about other people downvoting you for stating a verifiable fact. Reddit is full of hard-core Obama-loving left-wingers. Also, hyphens are fun.

[–]brosenfeld -1 points0 points ago

There isn't a politician alive that hasn't fucked over one group or another.

[–]ckallas2 0 points1 point ago

Yeah. He showed them.

I hope there is also a statute against this type of painting. This guy has created an eyesore.

[–]nexxus-s 0 points1 point ago

You are one reason I love America.

[–]WarPhalange 3 points4 points ago

Yeah! Go pseudo-patriotism!

[–]PurpleCapybara 0 points1 point ago

What bothers me is utter lack of trying to project an accurate flag onto an irregular surface. 50 stars and 13 stripes, man!
Other than that, I'm afraid he's given me an idea...

[–]WildfireFox 0 points1 point ago

I'm Canadian, and I support this. It's good to have belief in your country.

[–]LeAdmin 0 points1 point ago

He painted it wrong, count the stripes.

[–]faschr4023 0 points1 point ago

My brother and I spray painted an American flag on the top of the cab of my truck. When my friends asked me why I said "CAUSE THIS IS 'MERICA"

[–]diet_mountain_dew 0 points1 point ago

I don't know who downvoted you, but they should know that I have a very particular set of skills. Skills honed over a long career of redditing that make me a nightmare to people like them. I upvote all things 'Merica

[–]Vitalstatistix -2 points-1 points ago

Cool story bro.

[–]ThrillerBush -3 points-2 points ago

Bet this dude drives a Chevy with a Bush 04 sticker on it, drinks Coors/Bud, has a buncha guns, hunts, hates Hilary Clinton, and loves fake tits and pro wrestling Roll Tide my man

[–]The_Revival 3 points4 points ago

Yeah! He probably thinks of people like you as hippies, too. Anyone who loves the flag and their right to free speech is a douche who almost certainly generalizes about everyone he disagrees with. How unfair is that?!

[–]edouble77 0 points1 point ago

Don't know about all that, because I don't know the guy personally. But I am friends with a relative of his, I believe his nephew. He is very well educated, and very liberal.

[–]BadJewJew -1 points0 points ago

The usual proportional US response.
