It is amazing how dogs, and other animals, can identify the young. I was so impressed when my 120 pound German Shepherd met my niece for the first time... he was actually tiptoing towards her extra gentle like!

Our cat is the same way. She's kind of an asshole, and will bite and scratch you without warning one second, and hop into your lap for cuddles the next. (I still love her to bits, though.)

The first time my parents had guests over who brought their younglings, we were pretty apprehensive and told them to be careful because she might bite or scratch the kids.

She just laid there as they ran around and played and petted her, though. You could tell she was annoyed, but she didn't act out.

our saluki almost seemed afraid around children. I'm talking toddler and up to 3. He'd always look at us as if he was making sure we were approving of his behaviour. which for that ol clown was something he'd never do otherwise.

Both. My family had a Saint Bernard when both me and my sister were under age 4 up until I was much older. They are large but very gentle dogs. Never aggressive, and most always gentle. It is a breed known for that, but as with any pet, they have to be trained in order to keep those traits around people.

My older dog (beagle) is like that we foster kittens and puppies on occasion and he just lets them play. If they get too rough or he's had enough he just walks away.

Our younger dog (pitbull) is just a giant baby though. If one of the puppies/kittens does that he keeps backing up until they look away then her actually runs away as fast as he can.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't let any dog mix with a kitten like that, no matter how nice it was supposed to be. All that needs to happen is the cat scratching the dogs eye and instincts taking over for half a second to have a dead kitty. Or even the dog rolling over and killing the kitten.
