I, for one, don't see why seal clubbing has such a bad rap. Hunters have max quotas and the seal population is carefully watched to ensure that it is not in any danger of dropping too low. I think something like the overfishing of bluefin tuna is a hundred times more barbaric.

Holy crap. I heard this joke as a kid and never really thought about it. Why would you go to a bar and ask for a sandwich anyway? I kind of assumed a canadian club sandwich was a club sandwich with canadian bacon, but the whole thing never quite made sense. Thing is there is an European study saying the pik (not club) they use to kill seals is comparable in efficiency to most commercial slaughter houses. Thing is with a gun, you could be a good target shooter and get it between the eyes, but if the hit didn't destroy the brain it would be suffering until you could reach it to finish it off. Or you could just pik it to the brain once twice to make sure and the thing won't know what hit it. There are very strict regulations in place including a "blink test" that they have to do before they process the seal. Not to mention the evidence that animal welfare groups who collect the "damning evidence" when evaluated by professionals noted the evidence was often heavily edited, biased, and hard to draw any conclusions from.

But other thing to note is the white coats are have been illegal to hunt for about 20 years now.

I made a post further up about the very heavy regulations surrounding the sealing industry. Please educate yourself about what actually happens out there before wishing harm on someone trying to make a living in an area where there is shit all for employment.

You fail to realize that although animals have a "natural equilibrium" with the surrounding environment, that would entirely involve natural, cyclical population crashes. Which means that the overpopulation/starvation comment is correct. In which case lots of those seals would die anyway, so using them to feed hungry mouths is a good idea. Especially in the areas that those people and families live. Your first post exemplifies why people view environmentalists as extremists.

90% of time they are shot and if they survive then if the Hakapik is used. Besides this little guy would survive the til next year, when they are still white they aren't supposed to be killed. Plus they eat all the fish. And fish are awesome. All said by a friend who is in the seal hunt.

yes, exactly, there has been a cod moratorium for the past 22 years, the seals eat all the cods and the stocks will never replenish unless something is done to even out their populations. it's also illegal to kill whitecoats (baby seals). they kill them in the most humane way possible. i don't see how it's any more barbaric than birthing an animal only to have it spend its entire life being mistreated in a factory farm. they live their lives in the natural environment and are killed painlessly, to benefit other species, to have a sustainable industry for the people that do it and people use the fur, oil, and meat (which isn't from a huge factory farm, no fake hormones and garbage).
