Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

The article spells his name incorrectly; instead of Chris Kotsiopoloulos his surname should be spelled Kotsiopoulos.

This is the original source of the photo, you'll see that in the article they actually use a version that has been flipped upsidedown. His site is also well worth a look through.

[–]EthicalReasoning 146 points147 points ago

it's actually Chris Kostolpiliposlisolisoiolspoulous

[–]fiffers 43 points44 points ago

...but his friends just call him Solisoiolspoulous.

I'm pretty sure it's Snuffleupagus.

[–]I_wouldnot_trustme 0 points1 point ago

Nope it's Chris Kaleidoscope.

[–]katmaidog 13 points14 points ago

I like it better flipped up the right way, but I like the increased saturation in the version the OP posted.

[–]wingtales 1 point2 points ago

Yes, everyone knows day is always on top.

[–]synoptyc 1 point2 points ago

I must respectfully disagree. My own night-owl bias aside, the structure on the night side of the globe looks better right-side up.

Besides, everyone knows that north is always on top.

[–]FreeDirt 36 points37 points ago

I really like all the notes explaining the different parts of this photo too, it's really helpful. Thanks so much samlky!

[–]foregoneconclusion 12 points13 points ago

play it again, samlky.

[–]SportsPanties 13 points14 points ago

Play it once, Samlky, for old times' sake.

You're mistaking a movie for a thing people say.

[–]noflag 1 point2 points ago

In my Journalism 1 class, this is known as a GFE (gross factual error) and would result in an instant F on the paper. It's a damn shame these people can get work when so many journalism majors are struggling.

[–]sickaments 1 point2 points ago

Jessie Kotsiopoulos ?

[–]monkeycharles 1 point2 points ago

The link to order a print doesn't work. Does anyone have an idea how to get either a print of this or a version with a resolution high enough to make my own?

[–]klef 1 point2 points ago

Yea this was on Reddit like 6 months ago. I know because I saved it as my background image for a short time.

edit: that must be why this has 5,000 down votes

[–]p00dinger 91 points92 points ago

I thought Cell blew it up? King Kai's planet.

[–]YouJellyFish 52 points53 points ago

Technically, Goku blew up the planet using Cell. Cell self-destructed, Goku chose what was affected.

...I'll see my own way out.

[–]caneut 17 points18 points ago

And he just fucking grew himself back.

[–]steno_light 21 points22 points ago

And as Perfect Cell too! And learned Instant Transmission!!!

[–]proggR 5 points6 points ago

I want to learn Instant Transmission. I also want a Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

Looks like something from Mario Galaxy.

[–]pmerkaba 53 points54 points ago

Or perhaps something out of the Little Prince.

[–]Azurphax 14 points15 points ago

Great book, one of my favorite passages for those that missed out

It was then that the fox appeared.

"Good morning," said the fox.

"Good morning," the little prince responded politely, although when he turned around he saw nothing.

"I am right here," the voice said, "under the apple tree."

"Who are you?" asked the little prince, and added, "You are very pretty to look at."

"I am a fox," the fox said.

"Come and play with me," proposed the little prince. "I am so unhappy."

"I cannot play with you," the fox said. "I am not tamed."

"Ah! Please excuse me," said the little prince.

But, after some thought, he added:

"What does that mean--'tame'?"

"You do not live here," said the fox. "What is it that you are looking for?"

"I am looking for men," said the little prince. "What does that mean--'tame'?"

"Men," said the fox. "They have guns, and they hunt. It is very disturbing. They also raise chickens. These are their only interests. Are you looking for chickens?"

"No," said the little prince. "I am looking for friends. What does that mean--'tame'?"

"It is an act too often neglected," said the fox. It means to establish ties."

"'To establish ties'?"

"Just that," said the fox. "To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world..."

"I am beginning to understand," said the little prince. "There is a flower... I think that she has tamed me..."

"It is possible," said the fox. "On the Earth one sees all sorts of things."

"Oh, but this is not on the Earth!" said the little prince.

The fox seemed perplexed, and very curious.

"On another planet?"

"Yes."

"Are there hunters on that planet?"

"No."

"Ah, that is interesting! Are there chickens?"

"No."

"Nothing is perfect," sighed the fox.

But he came back to his idea.

"My life is very monotonous," the fox said. "I hunt chickens; men hunt me. All the chickens are just alike, and all the men are just alike. And, in consequence, I am a little bored. But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life. I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others. Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground. Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow. And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder? I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me. The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad. But you have hair that is the color of gold. Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me! The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you. And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat..."

The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time.

"Please--tame me!" he said.

"I want to, very much," the little prince replied. "But I have not much time. I have friends to discover, and a great many things to understand."

"One only understands the things that one tames," said the fox. "Men have no more time to understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shops. But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more. If you want a friend, tame me..."

"What must I do, to tame you?" asked the little prince.

"You must be very patient," replied the fox. "First you will sit down at a little distance from me--like that--in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the source of misunderstandings. But you will sit a little closer to me, every day..."

The next day the little prince came back.

"It would have been better to come back at the same hour," said the fox. "If, for example, you come at four o'clock in the afternoon, then at three o'clock I shall begin to be happy. I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances. At four o'clock, I shall already be worrying and jumping about. I shall show you how happy I am! But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you... One must observe the proper rites..."

"What is a rite?" asked the little prince.

"Those also are actions too often neglected," said the fox. "They are what make one day different from other days, one hour from other hours. There is a rite, for example, among my hunters. Every Thursday they dance with the village girls. So Thursday is a wonderful day for me! I can take a walk as far as the vineyards. But if the hunters danced at just any time, every day would be like every other day, and I should never have any vacation at all."

WHAT AM I LOOKING AT!?

[–]remapt 38 points39 points ago

The way these are generated is by taking a sequence of photos 360 degrees by 180 degrees around the camera. Once the rows and columns of pictures are edited so the edges blend into each other, the result must be mapped to a coordinate plane for display. Generally these are commonly viewed as equirectangular projections (like a map of the world when it its stretched and flattened into a rectangle) or as a Quicktime VR (the interactive "virtual tour" computer files that let you rotate your view to look around in all directions). In this case, the the final result was displayed in stereographic projection, which makes the image look like a small planet as seen in this picture.

This particular image required additional long exposure techniques spread out over a long time, plus the daunting task of getting the light transition between day and night to blend so elegantly. This is truly impressive.

[–]ActuallyYeah 4 points5 points ago

This particular image required additional long exposure techniques spread out over a long time, plus the daunting task of getting the light transition between day and night to blend so elegantly

Christ, I didn't even think about that little technicality. OP's camera fu is strong.

[–]empathogen 1 point2 points ago*

Not to take away from how cool this "shot" is, but a lot of auto-stitching programs exist that will automatically create the stereoscopic result with amazing blending. I've done this myself and it's really easy. Even with time-lapse shots. Just drag your image files in, select the type of panorama you want, and click start. Off the top of my head I know there is one that does this called auto-pana giga or something like that.

EDIT: Now that I'm back home, I can verify that I was thinking of Autopano Giga, which I've used before with unbelievably incredible results.

24 hours worth of day and night snaps merged into one panoramic frame.

[–]jigielnik 53 points54 points ago

That doesn't really do it for me, I need a more detailed explanation, where was it taken, how was it merged etc

[–]samlky 17 points18 points ago

Here's a detailed tutorial written by the photographer on how to create a similar image:

[–]shadowwork 1 point2 points ago

ok...good solve, it’s still awkward but definitely helps.

[–]rm999 1 point2 points ago

It's certainly annoying. White text on black background has been shown to increase eye strain and decrease readability.

[–]eyecite 30 points31 points ago*

It's a camera that rotated while it took pictures; the earth-looking thing in the center is the ground below the horizon, and the surrounding circle is the above sky.

[–]Vexillae 27 points28 points ago

I still don't get it (I'm a pathetic oaf, aren't I). Wouldn't including the ground below the horizon make it look like this?

Please explain it to me like I'm five. (:

[–]AffeKonig 42 points43 points ago

he took a bunch of pictures in a circle and it took him a day. he did it with the camera upside-down. when he was done, he folded the picture against itself(think like opening a Chinese folding fan thingy, except it opens into a full circle). I think.

[–]Vexillae 17 points18 points ago

Ah! Now this makes sense. Thanks so much for the analogy.

[–]adremeaux 10 points11 points ago

Camera upside-down...? That's a joke, right?

[–]remapt 1 point2 points ago

Most likely not upside down, but mounted in portrait mode to a special panoramic tripod head.

[–]remapt 9 points10 points ago

Here is the image re-projected with the horizon it its normal orientation. In this representation, the camera has taken pictures around in a circle, and the right edge continues onto the left edge of the picture. The bottom of the picture shows the ground directly below the camera (tripod is edited out). The ground is heavily distorted the same way Antarctica is distorted on a world map. If the image contained the sky straight up above the camera, that would be distorted in the same way, but the original photographer cropped that out.

Now consider a point, directly in the center, along the bottom edge of the image in my link. Consider that to be straight down below the camera. Now bend the picture, around that point, so the left and right horizons meet. That would make the horizon look like the outer edge of the "planet" in the original image, and the sky would distort a bit to dominate the "space" around the planet.

[–]Vexillae 1 point2 points ago

Oh, so that's why the "planet" looks so 3-dimensional! Because not only are the pictures put together; they're also distorted around a single point!

The warped Mercator analogy makes so much sense. Thanks!

[–]adremeaux 4 points5 points ago

It's not a panoramic camera, read the page. It's a regular 550D.

[–]jigielnik 1 point2 points ago

ahhhhhhhhhhh the rotation is what I was wondering about. At first i thought the top and bottom half of the sphere thing in the middle was the same image just night and day (which wouldnt make sense cuz there are different things on the bottom half than the top) but this makes much more sense

[–]diredyre 1 point2 points ago

It's not an actual merge, it's an artistic image and was probably made using photoshop.

The circles for instance are stars with long exposure time (earth spinning), but the clouds are individual snapshots, otherwise you'd have blurry light in their stead. The sun is pasted in to highlight the path and the day/night transition is probably just a photoshopped gradient.

It's supposed to look pretty and maybe a little deep (depending on how high you are), that's it.
