I cannot begin to understand the pain that would cause.

[–]isochron1218 165 points166 points ago

right, this is exactly what i thought looking at that:
man, bone cancer must be painful as fuck

[–]bobdavis_33n 145 points146 points ago

My mom had bone cancer. Yes it is painful as fuck.

[–]isochron1218 75 points76 points ago

oh my! I'm so sorry to hear that! :(

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]isochron1218 21 points22 points ago

I am sorry to hear that as well! I hope that you're not suffering too terribly :/
sends love and care

[–]lars730 6 points7 points ago

I have to imagine: massive amounts of pain meds > love and care

[–]Spiffy313 12 points13 points ago

So, what, a better response would be "Sorry I can't send you pain meds"?

[–]HypnoToad0 21 points22 points ago

but it looks so pretty :O

[–]isochron1218 33 points34 points ago

yeah it does! it's gorgeous even, albeit i have some odd and even disturbing tastes at times, but i wouldn't mind having one on display in like a treasure-room type thing. Like Ariel has in the little mermaid, i.e: her trove of human-stuffs.

[–]FunAndSafety 16 points17 points ago

There is a certain beauty. The intricacies of it's construction within the bone. Obviously terrible, but stunning.

[–]isochron1218 2 points3 points ago

exactly. it's morbid, but that doesn't mean it can't be ascetically pleasing

Serial killer?

[–]schrute_beet_farms 66 points67 points ago

I would start doing cocaine. And meth. And heroin. Any pixie sticks. And pcp. Anything to ease the pain.

[–]Migogdig 40 points41 points ago

I feel like a .45 would suffice.

[–]searingsky 18 points19 points ago

Killing yourself doesn't make the pain go away. It makes you go away.

[–]Spatulamarama 61 points62 points ago

No, it makes both go away.

[–]WiiMachinE 1 point2 points ago

I would have to imagine that for that little bit where you shot yourself but you still weren't dead would be painful as fuck. It probably wouldn't last very long but you can't tell me that a bullet through your face wouldn't hurt.

[–]sfultong 1 point2 points ago

I don't think the nerve signals + brain processing of pain would happen faster than ...

actually, wait. I suppose that when you die from severe brain trauma, it's usually because the brain stem is damaged enough so that it can't make your heart beat and lungs draw breath. So even when the brain stem is destroyed I suppose some broken mental machinery less than who you were is experiencing something quite unpleasant as much as it still can.

[–]Spiffy313 8 points9 points ago

Of course, a botched attempt would probably result in a large spike in the former..

[–]treydestepheno 9 points10 points ago

if that was happening to me...and I was in that much pain...I'd prefer to not exist.

also, I wouldn't want to subject my family to my continued agony and disfigurement. a nice morphine overdose would make my pain, and most importantly, the pain of my family go away.

[–]searingsky 7 points8 points ago

I understand all that and I fully support assisted suicide. It's just a philosophical objection to me. Saying things like "I'd prefer to not exist" doesn't work for me because it is completely outside a human being's reference frame and in my eyes it's a statement that can not be made by a person that fully grasps the concept of death. In a way, you can't decide to "not exist" beacause it is not something you do. There is no duality of choice for a conscient being between the states of life and death because death itself is not a state, but the absence of such.

That's not to say that choosing to end one's existence is necessarily a bad thing and something one is not allowed to do, nor that I wouldn't do it if subjected to such pain. If I could be high on morphine instead, til 'natural' death, I would choose that though.

[–]wiresnips 5 points6 points ago

Half right.

[–]zaferk 6 points7 points ago

Death is the ultimate form of pleasure, a release from the suffering that is life.

What makes death so bad, and why people think it sucks so much, is because death is bad for everyone around you, everyone except yourself. They are the ones that have to live with it, and cry over it.

[–]Henipah 10 points11 points ago

I'd go for the prescribed bisphosphonates, NSAIDs and slow-release opiates. Heroin would work but it's illegal here. They might use it in the UK.

[–]schrute_beet_farms 26 points27 points ago

I'm not talking legal stuff, boys. We're talking the hard stuff. Prison-time worthy drugs. Drugs even Al Capone said were too strong. So strong they named them the "Lord Voldemorts" of drugs.

[–]AdrianBrony 16 points17 points ago

oxy can be stronger than most of the illegal stuff, to be fair...

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

Many prescription drugs used to treat pain -- fentanyl and hydromorphone, for example -- are many times stronger than heroin.

[–]cnlporter2227 7 points8 points ago

Oxymorphone (Opana) = 40X Stronger than Morphine and 20-25X stronger than Heroin

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Fentanyl is reportedly one hundred times stronger than morphine, but I believe it is used more commonly as an anesthetic than as a treatment for chronic pain.

[–]dottydani 1 point2 points ago

Actually in the UK the use of fentanyl patches are used in many people with chronic pain.

[–]AggressiveAggressive 1 point2 points ago

My uncle just passed from Bone cancer. My cousin was telling me that they had decided to stop treatment and basically send my uncle home with morphine and some other drugs to ease the pain. Anyway, there was some sort of pain medicine applied topically to his corotid artery and it would instantly put him out. Any ideas as to what drug that may be?

[–]Steppy214 2 points3 points ago

Was it a patch? Maybe fentanyl transdermal?

[–]AggressiveAggressive 1 point2 points ago

From what was explained to me, it was more of a wipe that had almost instantaneous effects.

Fuck cancer. He went from being 5'11" 190lbs down to 136. He just wasted away and it was incredibly painful. Glad that there was something to somewhat manage the pain.

[–]lorinisapirate 1 point2 points ago

ABHR. My grandmother was on it before she died.

[–]EltaninAntenna 6 points7 points ago

the "Lord Voldemorts" of drugs.

You-know-which drugs, in other words.

[–]jobotslash 5 points6 points ago

So you'd go pseudo-breaking bad on the cancer?

[–]Nasturtium 1 point2 points ago

Prison aint so bad, you can make sangria in the terlet, course' its shank or be shanked.....

[–]RaleighwoodGirl 2 points3 points ago

Illegal would only be a sick bird as far as I was concerned if I had to deal with pain like that.

[–]CakeSmasher 2 points3 points ago

You know, I might just end my life legally if I had that much pain on a large scale.

[–]ldunn 1 point2 points ago

Do bisphosphonates help with the pain, or just the metastasis? I've just finished a two year course for fibrous dysplasia, but I never heard of it being for pain relief.

[–]seb101189 2 points3 points ago

If cancer was actively damaging the bone or there were microfractures causing pain, then it may help, but it's not going to relieve pain like an opiod or NSAID.

[–]SurelyIDidThisAlread 1 point2 points ago

Heroin, or diamorphine, is used in the UK for some pain treatment. Also by the serial killer Harold Shipman but let's gloss over that.

[–]Elrox 3 points4 points ago

I am pretty sure that Irvin Rosenfeld is still supplied cannabis from the US government, he has bone cancer and he says cannabis is working for him. I saw him in an interview saying that his bones will start growing spikes and stuff if he doesn't have enough cannabis.

[–]justwalksintomordor 13 points14 points ago

I wonder if my femur looks loke that. It hurts like all hell. Morphine barely brought my pain down to 4/10.

[–]MaeBeWeird 5 points6 points ago

I'm sorry your femur hurts so bad. Was that a side effect of walking into Mordor?

I guess they were right...

[–]justwalksintomordor 1 point2 points ago

Aye (lad/laddy). It be a heavy price, I should have heeded Lord Boromir's warning. Alas what's done is done.

[–]Vovicon 2 points3 points ago

:(

Sorry to hear that.

[–]justwalksintomordor 1 point2 points ago

Thank you :)

[–]nuovo_donna 6 points7 points ago

Bad enough that a friend of a friend who had it was prescribed prn fentanyl patches and a fentanyl inhalator, and she said it just took the edge off the pain.

[–]epithelia 1 point2 points ago

That was my first thought.

[–]munge_me_not 1 point2 points ago

This comment scared me, since I read the original caption as Boner Cancer.

[–]COD4CaptMac 3 points4 points ago

Wait... How would tha.... ಠ_ಠ

[–]TheHeinousAnus 123 points124 points ago

this picture gives me the heebie-geebies.

[–]ThisisDangeruss 62 points63 points ago

Yeah. It's really cool to look at but for some reason this picture is far more disturbing than any other picture of tumors I've seen. I think it's cuz we like to think of our bones as being so solid and static, it's weird to think of them going through a process like this.

[–]thangle 39 points40 points ago

The little fuzzy bones in the eye socket -- that has to be the worst.

[–]tucci77 32 points33 points ago

They're a little less fuzzy, and a little more spikey.

[–]kevpotts 17 points18 points ago

Good god don't call them fuzzy. Makes it worse somehow

[–]norikotheninja 34 points35 points ago

Super fucking I want to throw my phone creepy as fuck heeby jeebies. I have texture issues. This makes my skin crawl.

[–]danfanclub 13 points14 points ago

i'm used to seeing horrifying things on here and having to turn my head away quickly, then feeling some kind of revulsion; this was... different, it hit me in the chest instead of the stomach *shudder

[–]ricktencity 5 points6 points ago

I've seen some terrible things on the internet but for some reason this pictures creeps me out to an unreasonable extent. I feel full of anxiety after looking at it and I have no idea why.

[–]g1212 217 points218 points ago

Somehow, I always thought bone cancer was more of a marrow cancer, not a stalactite horror show.

Creepy shit. Fuck cancer.

[–]Veritas_LiberabitVos 33 points34 points ago

My thoughts exactly. Never knew this could happen. I mean, atleast to this extreme. God I can't begin to imagine (nor do I want to) the pain....

[–]alienangel2 3 points4 points ago

Yeah I have to wonder if this is what bone cancer is usually like, or is this an edge case?

[–]Veritas_LiberabitVos 2 points3 points ago

Well, for starters I'd imagine it's a rare case but I have no knowledge other than an educated guess. It appears, based off the picture alone, that this is an older skull but again that's only speculation. Assuming its an older skull we can guess the patient didn't have the more advanced care we have today and the cancer was found later on in it's cycle. That's all guess work and partly hoping this is a rare case because, not to offend, but fuck this shit. I'd never want to go through with that or have anyone in lieu of Hitler have it. ( I am not a professional, this is an amateur guess, don't downvote me into oblivion, if anyone has further knowledge I'd be glad to listen :) )

[–][deleted] ago

[–]notromanbellic 1 point2 points ago

hard cringe

[–]Henipah 1 point2 points ago

There are cancers like leukaemias that predominately affect the marrow.

[–]PuddinCup310 90 points91 points ago

That disturbs me. I just want to sand it down.

[–]727Super27 36 points37 points ago

Fuck yeah. Hit it with a belt sander - pneumatic, not that pussy electric shit. Coarse grit paper, and after it's all gone, burn the entire thing because fuck that.

[–]gentlegiant 6 points7 points ago

Just the thought of hitting it with a belt sander brings me so much relief.... Thank you.

[–]scojerroc 3 points4 points ago

I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit.

[–]Vomit_Comet 1 point2 points ago

Believe it or not, that was extremely soothing after looking at that picture. Thank you, kind internet stranger.

[–]Eternity42Immensity 3 points4 points ago*

That was my initial reaction too, but now I just want to gnaw the thin blades of bone away with my bottom teeth.

Edit: Look at the ones on the cheek. Definitely the first to go.

[–]Onefortwo 2 points3 points ago

I wish, it could just be perfectly smooth. Someone should photoshop it to give me some relief.

[–]Godunderscor 1 point2 points ago

Don't have a shop but I do have this picture of a normal skull.

I wouldn't know what to do

If you're prepared to take your own life, cancer no longer appears all that scary. It's the lack of a backup plan that makes it so. In this situation cancer's only power is to make your life a bit shorter than you might have wanted, and little power to make it miserable.

There's nothing wrong with me ATM but I have several "Plan Bs" carefully thought over. Sooner or later shit will go down, happens to everyone. It's nice to be in control of one's own fate; to be prepared for what you know is likely to happen but try not to think about.

For the sake of political correctness the government is legally bound to see you suffer, so a person needs to have their own wits about the whole thing and not rely on the constraints of the law.

[–]o_sLacKer_x 4 points5 points ago

share your Plan B's!

[–]NanoStuff 4 points5 points ago

There's a fair few. My favorites are pentobarbital for cleanliness and comfort, LSD + Height + Opiates/Disassociates for relative accessibility. LSD to eliminate inhibitions regarding self preservation and heights, Opiates/Disassociates to eliminate pain and awareness in the event that impact does not cause immediate death. The first one is legally used in some countries and progressive states, the second one not so much. The second can be sourced fairly easily, the first I'm not quite sure on yet, but there are good resources to look into.

Of course there are the obvious, gunshot to the head, however this has a surprisingly high fail rate, and bad news if you fail. In some countries access can also be extremely difficult.

There's also something to be said for a simple opiate overdose, but I'm unclear how well that would go over with someone who is inexperienced with them; high chance of throwing up and ending up in the hospital with a really bad headache. Perhaps when combined with antiemetics.

Whatever the case, any of the above options are better than having your own bone eat you alive. It does require a bit of determination, some people find it more convenient to suffer at the hands of a "medical professional" with regrettable results.

[–]Mike12344321 1 point2 points ago

i know how im going out.

renting the fastest car i can and hitting something like a bridge support

[–]stratocastner 1 point2 points ago

Kinda fucked up but alright.

[–]NanoStuff 3 points4 points ago

I'd argue that having bone slowly skewer your insides until you are dead more fucked up.

[–]Deergoose 2 points3 points ago

I'm with you man. I am only 25 and know that I will be the person getting myself out of this place. No children, no responsibilities, whenever life is too unbearable I'm gone.

Since you cannot legally be put down ( Jack Kevorkian was a hero ) you have to do it yourself.

I want to start a movement to support the right to die. Basically, if you're going to commit suicide, do it in a public place so people have to see what you did to yourself, and leave literature explaining that your government forced you to do it because there is no legal alternative for a clean, graceful exit.

[–]occasionallyacid 133 points134 points ago

my friend had bone cancer in his knee. He said he looked forward to every time they were going to cut in his knee, because then maybe the pain would go away.

He's got a 15 cm scar there now, and his knee hurts every single hour of every single day. I can understand why he likes to smoke weed.

[–]T-RexInAnF-14 41 points42 points ago

Is he cancer-free tho?

[–]occasionallyacid 46 points47 points ago

yeah, he goes to check-ups every year. He also had a tumour in his lip at one point.

[–]dhmachine86 57 points58 points ago

This is by far and away the worst thing I have ever seen on Reddit the internet.
Saw it yesterday on /r/WTF and its been haunting me ever since.
Thanks for reminding me about it again, assholePancakeMonkeypants.

[–]Maxion 17 points18 points ago

Yeah, as a mod here I see all kinds of shit, stuff that even needs to be removed.

This is my #1 worst post I've seen in this sub.

[–]dhmachine86 1 point2 points ago

This.
I take some consolation in the fact that an /r/wtf MOD also finds this terrible.

[–]PancakeMonkeypants[S] 10 points11 points ago

It was even on your cake day.

[–]dhmachine86 2 points3 points ago

Sigh. I didn't even notice that till now.

[–]Spiffy313 2 points3 points ago

Good Guy dhmachine86: has cake day; doesn't even realize it, let alone post some stupid-ass picture to celebrate.

[–]dhmachine86 1 point2 points ago

I'd post a picture of my dog, but I'll just skip it. Seems sort of futile at this point.

[–]asymptomatic 2 points3 points ago

It is genuinely weird for me to read all of these posts claiming this image to be so disturbing. Of course it's not exactly pleasant to suffer from bone cancer, but I am not even remotely phased by this photo. It just find it interesting. For me this doesn't even register in the top 10000 most disturbing images I've seen online.

[–]tenkadaiichi 23 points24 points ago

I'm not sure.... is that eating away at the bone, or is the bone growing out like coral?

[–]PancakeMonkeypants[S] 49 points50 points ago

Since cancer is the cells duplicating out of control I'd say it's all growth. Ouch :-(

[–]tenkadaiichi 3 points4 points ago

That's what I thought. Wow, every time you flex a muscle, or somebody touches you would be agony.

[–]Simonovski 3 points4 points ago*

You're right. The label says sarcoma, so the cancer probably derived from osteoblasts, which build bone tissue. Although, interestingly, sometimes these duplicating cells can cause the opposite effect too. e.g. breast cancer, which often spreads to bones, where it encourages the break down of bone so it can invade that tissue.

[–]Connor92 19 points20 points ago

Why is it that I can look at pictures of a guys head impaled on a fence and another man's face crushed under a train, but I cannot look at this without feeling sick? I don't know if it's the fact that I have never been aware this disease can have that drastic an affect on human bones or the fact that there are people who live with this every day. All I know is this is easily one of the most disturbing images I have ever seen on the internet.

[–]specfreq 1 point2 points ago

It appears we're in the same boat, I can't look at that without wanting to puke.

[–]mazumi 109 points110 points ago

FUCKING FUCK I almost just screamed out loud at work. That...texture is fucking horrifying. I can't even look at it. Sorry for all the fucks.

[–]PancakeMonkeypants[S] 41 points42 points ago

I gave a lot of fucks too. It's really unsettling...

[–]analgesia 9 points10 points ago

I put together Sarcoma medical conferences at work... there's no getting used to it. Amputated limbs are just a start to what this type of cancer can do, and I've seen more than my share.

Yeah looks like coral

[–]forshow 1 point2 points ago

Your fucks have been forgiven.

[–]drooLsc 17 points18 points ago

I have seen a lot of shit on the internet, messed up shit, everything, like everyone else here. But this... this is the most disturbing picture I have seen. Holy shit. Someone better go and make a fucking cure. ... I'll be in the bathroom, making sure that I don't throw up all over my room.

[–]RosieJo 16 points17 points ago

My dad had it when he was a little kid. It was only after I got older, that I realised why he was so unsympathetic when I hurt myself as a kid.

Who could fucking blame him, I must have seemed like a whiney little bitch.

[–]Colostomy 1 point2 points ago

My friend's dad had this. This picture has royally fucked him up. I cannot imagine the pain in having this, or the pain in knowing the full extent of the agony your father went through.

[–]Dissidius 10 points11 points ago

Too many shivers were had.

[–]monkeyleavings 13 points14 points ago

This is disturbing. Fuck cancer.

[–]Dr_Michio_Kaku 9 points10 points ago

I just have this urge of scraping the excess bone off for some reason.

[–]IamAhamsterAMA 11 points12 points ago

What does it look like with skin on it?

[–]singorpino 6 points7 points ago

Just for the people without any medical background, not all bone cancer is like this. To make it easy, bone cancers can be divided in cancers that ''eat'' the bone and that ''produce'' bone. Both forms are horrible nonetheless.

[–]Miaoudeminou 13 points14 points ago

My aunt has this and is going through chemotherapy.

[–]sanguinekane 3 points4 points ago

Good luck to your aunt! Fuck cancer!

[–]bearses 5 points6 points ago

I have a spinal disease called ankylosing spondylitis that is causing the vertebrae to fuse. I imagine this is what my spine looks like. It sure feels like it.

[–]ALLCAPSON 2 points3 points ago

Sounds kinda nasty. Hope things turn out for the better in the future for you.

[–]Syaoran07 1 point2 points ago

This made me feel very sad

[–]norrbjorn 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure how to feel about this. I find it intriguing, and almost beautiful at some level. That makes me feel guilty since this person obviously must have gone through hell on earth.

[–]MarcBoudy7 1 point2 points ago

This is such a haunting picture

[–]lastfatality09 1 point2 points ago

Even after having seen countless horrible stuff on r/gore this one is the worst, I can't imagine pressing on the skin and potentially make a hole with the bone. Holy shit

[–]lumpystumps 1 point2 points ago

I've seen countless pictures and videos of people dying in the most horrific ways but this is by far the worst. Can you imagine being killed by your own bones as they slowly but surely grow into your brain. I think I'd rather shoot myself than go through that, the worst part is knowing that this person must have survived up until this point, I mean their skull was growing into their eyeball, they probably couldn't even move it without tearing it to shreds.

[–]Illah 1 point2 points ago

I'm really curious to see what this would have looked like when the person was still alive. Was it protruding out like spines? Lumpy calloused tissue? Man that looks horrible.

[–]Diabolico 1 point2 points ago

In case you aren't creeped out enough, remember that this is not crystallization (even though it looks like it superficially). This is an image of how far the disease progressed while the subject was still alive. That right eye was out of commission. The entire face must have been constantly inflamed and bruised from the tearing caused by the bone. What's more, this whole process took months to happen, at least.

Replace the skull with steel I say.

[–]Jibbletoad 1 point2 points ago

Why do I have this sudden urge to rub my hands against this skull?!

[–]patrickry07 1 point2 points ago

Did he die?

[–]Sabersong 1 point2 points ago

Not that anyone here cares, but I keep coming back to look at this photo. I'm so horrified and the whole reality of it has struck me so hard. I'm crying like hell. I've not lost a loved one to cancer and I fucking hope I never will...

[–]Simpleton216 1 point2 points ago

I'll leave this here http://www.bcrt.org.uk/

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

having a running event for bone cancer is like hosting a charity rave for epilepsy.

[–]seoulbandit84 1 point2 points ago

[–]LettersFromTheSky 1 point2 points ago

I drink a gallon of milk every 5 days. I hope I never get this.

[–]theceasar 1 point2 points ago

my friend passed away from Ewing's sarcoma. It's weird to see it.

[–]erick_discordia 1 point2 points ago

The son of one of my coworkers is going through this right now. He has it in his right forearm.

[–]tianas_knife 1 point2 points ago

My Boyfriend's mother passed away on the 3rd from bone cancer. We sat with her in the hospital the few weeks she was alive after they stopped chemo, and I sat by her bed and held her hand for days. She was in incredible, and unbearable amounts of pain constantly. There were no drugs that could help her.

I didn't really have any idea of what bone cancer really was like until this photo. And now I feel like I'm going to be sick.
