Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

Goddamn the beginning of that movie is a punch in gut. A necessary one, but a pretty hard one, nonetheless.

[–]MustWarn0thers 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Man this is an under statement. The first time I watched this, I got caught so off guard by the way in which they fast forwarded through their lives, I was bawling like a goddamn baby. My gf looked over at me like "what the fuck is going on over there?!"

[–]mezofoprezo 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I watched it with my husband and his mom and we were all bawling. How can you not?

The "Up!" test is definitely in my arsenal of character judgements.

[–]Jason207 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My gf at the time wasn't moved at all by UP, I really should have taken that as a sign. From now on...

[–]r2002[S] 2 points3 points ago

Was there other obvious signs you missed, like having red hair or aversion to sunlight and puppies?

[–]illest-villain 3 points4 points ago

Haha same, my friend thought something terrible had happened. Also, spontaneously burst into tears throughout the movie if anything reminded me of the bit at the beginning.

[–]Shagomir 1 point2 points ago

This happened to me, I cried for 15 solid minutes, and then started again whenever he would look up at the sky and be like "WHYYY?".

[–]western_style_hj 0 points1 point ago

I watched my roommate's DVD and it was the first time I'd seen the film. He walked in the room and before the movie started he prefaced it with "Let me just say - I am so, so sorry. You're about to feel so sad." It didn't take long for me to realize what he was talking about. He was sorry for replacing the DVD with a box of chopped onions. sniffle Damn that movie!

Have not watched this yet, are we talking like "Jurassic Bark" type punch? Because that episode ruins my day every time.

[–]mbrady 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a bigger punch actually, although the punch is at the beginning rather than the end, so you have time to recover. You should still watch it at least once.

To be honest it is the music that gets me...it's so beautiful and sad at the same time.

[–]sentimentalpirate 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's ok. The idea of a lost potential for a family and missing out on fulfilling a life-long dream with your partner is something that will naturally be more relatable to an adult than to a child.

I'm guessing that scenes like the Ellie Badge award at the end of the movie feel very different for kids vs adults, because the kids relate to Russell, who now has a "dad" figure who is proud of him and his accomplishments, while adults relate to Carl, who now has a "son" figure with whom he can share his life, adventures, and importantly - his memory of Ellie.

[–]unexceptional 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're gonna come back to that movie in 10 years and cry their heads off, I think. It's a movie that I think will age well.

ahem http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095327/ Your list is about to become two. Sadest movie ever made. Should be manitory viewing for all humans. If you don't cry then you're not human.

[–]noisesolo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It gets even worse when you find out it was based on a semi-autobiographical novel. The author wrote the novel as a personal apology to his sister.

[–]singularity2030 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I knew that was going to be the movie. I did not cry during this movie at all. I'm not going to lie, I've cried in quite a few movies but I had trouble feeling a connection to the characters and I'm really not sure why.

[–]Monokurokazuya 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I cried so hard at the beginning of the movie... I was surprised that a film, seemingly targeted towards kids, can have such a large impact on adults.

[–]singularity2030 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've cried in other movies but no movie has developed such a strong emotional connection to 2 characters in such a short time frame. Normally when something sad happens early in a film, you might feel bad for the character but you don't feel moved because you haven't developed an attachment to the character yet.

[–]Monokurokazuya 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I feel like the issues presented in the movie between the old guy and his wife (I forgot their names, if they had one...) are real problems we encounter in the world. Not being able to have a kid, not able to achieve your dreams, etc. Gah, I gotta watch that movie again.

[–]IronCheetah 1 point2 points ago

[–]1CUpboat 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's nothing wrong with it, but I wouldn't watch someone going around shooting puppies just so I can take in the full human experience. Why would I do that to myself?

[–]ttt1776 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but this isn't the "shooting real puppies" movie, that would be retarded, the reasoning why the opening of up is so sad is because it's real life. Real life in the since that.... people really do grow old, and they have hopes and dreams and not all of them happen and then in the end one person of a couple might live to have their loved one pass away before them.

And then the fact that he talks to her still after she is gone... that's just as hard for me. That cuts me just as much as the opening.

[–]munky_quack 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have seen it and I agree it's just i know they had a kinda montage with lots of photos and stuff, wasn't sure if maybe they slipped that in there.

The "Married Life" montage at the beginning of Up is one of the saddest 4 minutes of film I've ever seen. Even though I've seen it 5 times, I'm sure if I watched it again right now I would cry again.

The first time I saw it in the theater, I looked around and EVERYONE was crying, including a thug looking guy and a young Marine in uniform in our row.

I found Wall-E much more emotionally charged. It gave such a damning glimpse into our planets future if we continue on our shitastic ways. Makes you question that double whopper and king size fries meal choice.

[–]mxlrd 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was the dialogue that got me going

[–]arkwald 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wall-E was about drowning.

It was how we all get drowned out of our living by our lives. Drowned in waste, drowned in entertainment, drowned in doing what is supposed to be good for us, drowned in love and drowned in conflict. Yet despite all this crushing weight coming down on all of us we just keep going until we can't. Which leads to the other part of the story.

That being life.

How life overcomes all these obstacles, despite being so very crushing. That is why Wall-E lived at the end. As long as you want to keep trying there will be room for second chances. Not just for you but for people you are with. Don't give up on yourself, the ones you love or humanity. As long as you do these things you are alive.
