New Scientist is not well regarded inside of the scientific community - at least not mine (molecular biology/infection biology). The general view is that its sensational and lacks depth. I kind of think of New Scientist as the World News Daily of the scientific journalism world.

I think the other one you're thinking of is Scientific American. My opinion is that it tends to be better than New Scientist as far as scientific journalism goes and tends to have more depth while speaking to a scientifically literate layperson.

As a moderator of /r/Science I want to reassure you that we are currently doing a TON of stuff to change how we moderate to make sure that kind of repetitive, sensationalised junk does not make it to the front page. I can't say it will never happen, but we're doing a lot of things to make the subreddit better.

Yeah. In the past our stance was largely laissez faire because we didn't have enough manpower at the amount of hours each person could donate to the job. But we've got a bunch of new, eager, skilled volunteers as well as some new tools and methods to streamline the process.

We hope to see more "hey jerkwad why was my post removed?" rather than "why are all these posts here? They're crap!"

Should be pointed out that it's not Dawkins' own quote; he actually is paraphrasing a former editor of New Scientist. Dawkins is responding to Neil DeGrasse Tyson's (very apt) criticism that Dawkins may be actually turning away people from science by being so abrasive in his talks. I think people just get too daunted... Sciences is knowledge on knowledge til you reach the point where there isn't knowledge and you decide to create knowledge or you start questioning the knowledge that you've been handed down. or you use the knowledge in a different way than its been used before. But you can't know it all at once. You have to learn step by step and keep knowing and it never stops. I think everyone could be a scientist. All it takes curiousity and if people would stop making it out to be hard. It's not. It's like reading, in terms of when people don't do it and then decide not to bother and then it looks like gibberish because you don't start little, you expect to be able to read the book since everyone is ahead of you or seems to be by the time you want to learn. But it's not that you're not capable! But also...I think the general school system sucks curiousity out of kids and make them approach everything like work...so that could contribute to a lot of the opinions people have today. You don't just wake up and know everything. Think of all the little things we do and are able to. It's accumulated knowledge; it just comes easy because we do it all the time. Everyone doesn't have to love it or be passionate about it because people are different, but it really is interesting. I think sometimes people block their minds and their potential
