Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

one of my biggest regrets is being born into a world with so much light pollution. then i remember dysentery, influenza epidemics, typhoid, plague, and people who thought bathing would kill you and realize i can just go to a desert some day.

There are still some places. Get away from the major metropolitan centers. I don't mean just "out in the country," like fifteen minutes' drive out of town. Sadly, a good portion of the eastern seaboard of the US is just one big orange glow at night. But if you can get far enough away, you can still see some truly beautiful night skies. I grew up in Vermont, and I could clearly see the Milky Way from my backyard, and I even lived in town; I could get a better view if I wanted, and often did.

MIRV bro, never leave home without it

[–]gcanyon 0 points1 point ago

Forget the mojave. You want Mauna Kea. It's pretty amazing

Same thing, but different here, (interactive)

The desert is actually not the best place for it (well except for Antarctica) The best place is usually the mountains secluded from other towns...

“…to me, Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all.Certainly, the most popular, great painter of all time, the most beloved. His command of color the most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty.Pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world…no one had ever done it before. Perhaps, no one ever will again. To my mind, that strange, wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world’s greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived.” -

Look at the sky. It's not dark and black and without character. The black is, in fact deep blue. And over there: lighter blue and blowing through the blues and blackness the winds swirling through the air and then shining, burning, bursting through: the stars! And you see how they roar their light. Everywhere we look, the complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes.

The Doctor: I wouldn't say that. The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things... The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice-versa, the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

It's what you all were thinking...

The final scene with Vincent in the museum brings me to tears every time. It's in my top ten favorite Doctor Who episodes. LOVE. IT.

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. You may have all my upvotes for the rest of eternity as well as a fez.

[–]Phatz 2 points3 points ago

Why all the downvotes? Fezes are cool!

Was the first thing I thought of when I saw this. :( Here come the tears.

[–]Looking4Hare 1 point2 points ago

Little did you know, that sow thistle closes its flower for the night.

[–]chriscancook21 1 point2 points ago

Came here expecting the post to be nearly over run by Whovians. Was not disappointed.

The painting depicts the view outside his sanitorium room window at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (located in southern France) at night, although it was painted from memory during the day.

Here you go.

Can you imagine if the fucking candle went out

[–]silent_seamstress 0 points1 point ago

He actually painted Starry Night while in the hospital. The green stuff coming from the corner isnt trees, art historians think it was moss growing on the hospital window, blocking the view.

As an American, I wish the US had more towns like Europe. I love the architecture of the small, yet dense, towns that dot the landscape. I hate how our cities are so spread out and just ugly.

[–]CoolGuySean 0 points1 point ago

Didn't he paint this from a jail cell? Lol, I think he did but this post is great anyway!

[–]wolke999 0 points1 point ago

I am just an amateur Van Gogh fan. And must admit I used google picture search to be sure, but I thought there was something strange about this picture.

The Starry Night by Van Gogh and the

Who else noticed that some stars overlap tha dark side of the moon?

[–]rjkall 0 points1 point ago

Fantastic. After a quick search... Starry Night by Alex Ruiz

[–]aconn9 0 points1 point ago

Van gogh painted "starry night" looking through the window of an asylum

[–]Scarletwings 0 points1 point ago

I'm not one much for pictures, but this is truly beautiful

[–]vaguelyreptilian 2 points3 points ago

As a Van Gogh fan, I object to this picture - the amazing thing about Van Gogh isn't how he... saw amazing things and then drew amazing pictures, but that he saw average things and drew amazing pictures. This photoshop looks kitschy and fake to me. What makes "starry night" a masterpiece is Van Gogh takes something we don't take time to really see, or take for granted, and makes us realize how beautiful it is. This is just an overblown photoshop.

[–]ummsure 4 points5 points ago

It's from Doctor Who.

[–]vaguelyreptilian 1 point2 points ago

I've seen the episode and I'm a big Who fan. But my misanthropic crankhood stands, goddamn it.

[–]ummsure 2 points3 points ago

Fair enough.

[–]JayJayJokesterr -1 points0 points ago

Overblown because you can see such great detail in the sky?

Most likely, while Van Gogh was a live, the night sky really did have such great detail. That's what happens with 0 light pollution, although maybe not such great detail with the moon in the sky, but you get my point.

Although you may still be right, the night sky during his years may of been something most people took for granted. Although in present time most people certainly wouldn't if they saw such a detailed night sky. And it still shows 'average things'. It just shows the village, no one would really see great beauty in it if you live in it all the time. But Van Gogh was able to convey the beauty that he saw, etc. etc.

[–]elasticbingbong -2 points-1 points ago

Tacky.

[–]luckystarr -1 points0 points ago

Thing is, thanks to light pollution if you would stand on the same spot today you probably wouldn't see as many stars as Vincent back then.

No sense of wonder, just blackness and a few sad white dots.
