This was done by a professional stylist. They never use harsh chemicals. The color is actually from Kool-Aid packets. Kudos to the stylist for such detail.

Kool-Aid packets don't come with sugar. Or is there something else that would attract ants? Great post none-the-less.

I see no reason why this is abuse, no more than the ridiculous cuts they give those dogs every day.

Tasteless, yes. Abusive? Not so sure. How do we know the dog is miserable? Why do we assume it cares how it looks? If the way it looks leads people (its environment) to treat it well, that's probably the way it wants to look. Plenty of living things work that way, including people.

the only bad thing about the whole show dog grooming(the ones where they do them up at the show) is that they let the fur grow out. if the show isn't in winter, its not good for the dog. they look like giant overgrown sheep

[–]A_User 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not abuse. A dog cannot be distressed by its own appearance because it cannot recognize its own body visually. Put a dog infront of a mirror and you will see this.

[–]Liberalguy123 -2 points-1 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree it's not abuse, but I'm fairly certain that dogs can identify themselves in a mirror.

edit: nevermind, I guess I'm wrong.

[–]Golden-Calf 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dogs fail the mirror test.

[–]Liberalguy123 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's interesting... my dog can definitely identify things like food or people on a mirror. Not sure if it can identify itself.

[–]Golden-Calf 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He probably views his reflection as another dog. He gets that the people are in the mirror because they look like people. He sees himself in the mirror and he sees a dog, but he doesn't realize that he's the dog.

[–]GodofRock13 -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The dog the didn't realize he was a dog hmm...

[–]Golden-Calf 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, how is the dog supposed to know what he looks like? Do you think, for example, that a dog knows what color his own eyes are, or whether or not he has a white spot on his face? If he sees his owner in the mirror, he can easily recognize it as his owner because he knows what his owner looks like. The dog has no way of knowing what he looks like though, so when he sees the reflection, he sees just another dog, but he doesn't realize that the "other dog" is only a reflection of himself. That's why some dogs react like this to the mirror. Aggressive dogs will sometimes try to attack the mirror. I don't think there's ever been a recorded case of a dog passing the mirror test.

[–]GrayStudios 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because a person or food looks the same in a mirror. A dog can't understand the concept of seeing itself.

[–]gemcitytiffany 0 points1 point ago

[–]phidel_kashflow -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People might argue that we know better but I definitely agree with you. Dog's have a completely basic self-awareness.

[–]kitteh-saur -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But dogs can definitely know when they look bad and when they look good. I work at a dog groomers, you should see how differently dogs act when they are cleaned up nicely and look good. On the other hand, when a dog requires being shaved down because the owner does not take care of it, the dog will become shy and seem embarrassed.

[–]britbrit11 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a dog groomer i see this as a form of art.. and the well being of the animal always comes first. if they show sign of fatigue while being groomed they are given a brake from it, and as mentioned only safe products that aren't hard on their skin are used.

[–]jennaelise75 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm also a dog groomer, poodles like the one shown here are very used to being groomed, lots of my poodle clients actually seem to enjoy it! Only a very experienced groomer would be able to pull off a trim like this one, and the dogs comfort is always put first. Upvote for you, us groomers need to stick together! :)

[–]riptaway 2 points3 points ago

I'll jump on the bandwagon. That dog probably isn't any less comfortable like that than it would be in a natural state. And if it is, it's probably minimal. At the same time, I guarantee that dog eats better and is cared for better than many children.

[–]Iamnotfromthisplanet 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I was about 7or 8 years old, I was in a pet parade(a giant deal for a little kid in my town). I have a standard poodle like the one in the picture. So I took her to the groomers the day of the parade and the groomer made her top notch blue and yellow, our school's colors and dressed her up like a cheer leader. We won the contest and my dog was fine. The dye was natural and didn't hurt her. She loved the extra attention too.

[–]Gaaabbers 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly, only ignorant people see this as animal abuse. In order for a dog to sit still long enough for this process they are very pampered, loved, cuddled and cared for. There is no way a dog that is abused and hated by people is going to let you do this.

The people who like to do creative grooming (which is what this is) love their animals and see this as a bonding with their dog. Not everyone can go fake hunting or play fetch with their dog for health and mobility reasons. Grooming is a calming and rewarding experience for both the animal and the owner, so fucking what if they use dyes? They would never hurt an animal they consider part of the family.

TL;DR dogs love this, ignorant people piss me off.

[–]ChickenRidesAgain[!] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Heads up - I've worked with and for a few groomers. Those dogs are hit, screamed at, choked, and sprayed with water to get them to behave. I've never met a groomer who has never hit a dog. Call me ignorant if you want, but it doesn't change what I've seen.

[–]Gaaabbers 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The place you're working in is unethical and they should all be reported to animal control.

A good groomer would never choke or hit a dog. The people who do creative grooming usually work with their own pets too, hence what I said.

[–]ChickenRidesAgain[!] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you're looking through rose tinted glasses at the industry. That kind of behavior seems to be revoltingly common, which is why you have to be really careful about the people you let care for your pets. Also, I've met a lot of people who send their animals to be sedated regularly for creative grooming, because they want them to "look pretty" but their animals are too high stress and object to the treatment. I still don't find it appropriate.

[–]ienjoypuppies 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My grandmother is in the business of pet grooming and never once have I met or seen anything like this happen. Not at shows, not at groomers, not anywhere. Perhaps you work at a cruel hellhole of a grooming place, but professionals take this very seriously and would never cause harm to the animal.

because they are one of the smartest breeds of dogs, are extremely friendly and have great tolerance for annoying kids. They are great hunters. If the owner decides they do not want the 450 dollar hassle of french bullshit styling, or in the case of the pic above, probably a grand worth of styling, then they can actually look rather imposing

I feel like your opinion isn't researched. If they're using harsh dyes, it could constitute animal abuse. But most of the people who do this or get it done to their dog only use safe and harmless methods.

The dog isn't going to care that it looks like a pound of cotton candy thrown into a washing machine.

[–]Falcorsc2 2 points3 points ago

cotton candy would dissolve since its just sugar. So that would most likely be animal abuse if your dog was now just a puddle of liquid

They are hunting dogs. I personally know at least a dozen standard poodles; they're all smart kids who would love the attention this got them.

[–]gukeums1 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, I'm not denying that they're hunting dogs - but that's hardly their only purpose now. They are show dogs and pets. While they can still be a good hunting dog, there are other breeds better suited for hunting that still have that desire in their immediate lineage.

Poodles are generally bred and kept as pets, not as hunting dogs - sure, that's their original purpose, but we're still talking about a variety of behavior and characteristics that're several (if not many) generations ago for most standard Poodles.

Longtime dog-worker and groomer here...I don't find this haircut or dye job offensive or abusive...just tacky, hah! No one worth worrying about would really take that dog or its owner very seriously.
