I didn't know that Mars had those gigantic canyons before seeing this image. It reminded me of Klendagon from the Mass Effect games. Sure enough, the giant rift on Klendagon takes inspiration from the Valles Marineris seen here.

I remember finding this planet in ME2 and reading:

The geological record suggests it is the result of a "glancing blow" by a mass accelerator round of unimaginable destructive power.

Boy, did that get my imagination flowing. I don't know if they addressed it in the third game (broken xbox), but I guessed it was some kind of Reaper super weapon. edit: formatting

Actually, it was in ME1 that you could originally find this planet, you even went to its moon. The picture they used in the sky was just one of mars.

It is explained in ME2, Cerberus find the weapon that caused the crater, and followed the last projectile fired by it and found the 'dead' reaper you find legion on. The weapon was that of a harvested civilisation millions (37 million iirc) of years ago.
