upvote for 12 year-olds who understand science better than many adults

[–]Minimalphilia 15 points16 points ago

When I was seven, I learned aout the big bang and how the earth formed and how the first beings came into life and all that cool and amazing stuff. So I told my friends at school: Most of them were just not interested -.- BUT two did ask me, how stupid I was, because everyone knows that God created earth and humans... I spent one hour for a 15min way home debating them, how they find it more logical, that some guy in the sky lets people pop into existence (which of course none of us can even imagine how its done), in comparison to a cool (explosions and shit!!!), logical way of explanation.... And I was a christian till 17 btw, but never took the bible literally.

[–]trojans231 -4 points-3 points ago

Saying God makes them just "pop" into existence is a bad way to argue. If you were Christian, you should know that God took dirt and made man from the dirt. (Adam) God saw that Adam was lonely so he created Eve from one of Adams ribs. They lived in the garden of Eden with few stipulations, one being "DON'T EAT THE FRUIT OF THIS TREE!" When Eve fell into temptation and ate the fruit of said tree, they were cast out of the garden, where they began to have children and cause the world to fill with people.

I'm not even a Christian, more of an agnostic but this sheer ignorance of the beliefs of the Christian faith is awful. You claim to have read the bible and understand it, but it appears that you only read in a logical fashion, with no meaning. Understanding the bible in the way the Christians do takes time, faith, AND logic. Hate me if y'all will, but that is the attitude of /r/athiesm and it disappoints me everyday. "we are smirking bastards who hate Christianity/Islam more than anything in the world!"

[–]DogRapistPANDA 6 points7 points ago

Are you effin kidding me? The little guy was SEVEN! Give him break!

[–]trojans231 -3 points-2 points ago

He said he was Christian until he was 17. That is old enough to understand.

[–]DogRapistPANDA 4 points5 points ago

Yes but he was seven when he made that argument to his friends.

[–]trojans231 -2 points-1 points ago

Now that I read that, it makes sense, but now as an older adult his description should fit what he learned, it's cool that he described it as he would when he was 7, but it still seems odd.

[–]Minimalphilia 0 points1 point ago*

I know the bible. The book of Job was the main reason for me to become an atheist. I even find knowing the bible crucial for understanding western culture, as collection of tales that had a huge impact on history and art (modern and old). I tried to describe the ground argument between us in that age, but I assure you, I do understand better now, what the creation of man in Gods image means and that Adam is just another word for earth (or acre but I get the point). BUT even then we have this guy, that takes earth and blows life into it as if it was no big deal. This as well is not very rational and noone can imagine that, because it can't happen. So actually with a change of words it still stays ridiculous to believe, that it actually happened. Oh and the whole creation of eve as part of adam and being a bitch on the first occasion thing... Added by patriarchal idiots. The only thing I would believe in is a simoultaneous creation of both in the image of God, because I don't think he/she has a gender (or both genders, when you read carefully. He doesn't say "let us", because it was fancy to talk this way.)

[–]mretchin 0 points1 point ago

it's more convenient to say "pop" :)

[–]Smackythefrogs 5 points6 points ago

You'd be surprised how many "fundies" actually believe in science without even knowing it.

[–]Freakychee 4 points5 points ago

Wait, fundamentalist don't think earthquakes are caused by the tectonic plates? I understand they don't believe in evolution but what?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

AFAIK some Bible-belt states didn't teach tectonic plate theory until the 80s.

[–]Freakychee 3 points4 points ago

Out of curiosity, when did bible belt states start teaching about how the earth was round?

[–]S4uce 0 points1 point ago

12/21/2012

[–]danthemancooney 4 points5 points ago

I learned about that in sixth grade. It's not really that hard to understand.

[–]ManicParroT 22 points23 points ago

CSB time:

It was a few days after the massive earthquake in Japan, on the highway down to Tokyo. We were leaving the immediate area in a bus because of the threat of the nuclear reactor melting down and irradiating everything. At the time, everyone was incredibly tense and on edge. Thousands and thousands of people had just died, and we'd been right next to it all.

This Christian woman said to me "Oh, I'm so thankful for God looking after me! I'm so grateful! God is awesome!". I looked at her and thought thousands of people are dead and all you can do is carry on about how awesome this God of yours is

And then I asked "So, why did God make this happen?"

And she replied, still beaming with joy and contentment "Oh, maybe he moved his hand quickly and bumped the world! Yes, maybe that's it! He moved his hand and there was an earthquake!"

I have never hated Christians as much as I did in that moment.

[–]mstrwilson 36 points37 points ago

His name was Jeremiah Johnson, and they say he wanted to be a mountain man.

[–]Aero121 23 points24 points ago

And some folk say he's up there still. Some say he always will be.

[–]Anotymous 11 points12 points ago

watch your top knot.

[–]coolfoolgod 7 points8 points ago

Watch Yorn!

[–]Strudol 8 points9 points ago

[–]JulyJohnson 0 points1 point ago

[–]AdmiralBeavers 5 points6 points ago

Upvotes for everyone

[–]Wolf_Protagonist 2 points3 points ago

TIL it was based on a true story.

[–]DoesntFearZeus 11 points12 points ago

What kind or sorcery is this? That jpg is animated!

[–]NavierfuckingStokes 3 points4 points ago

You can't explain that

[–]atheistunderworld 1 point2 points ago

ahh... it is a gif

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

ITS A SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE!

[–]dildingdos 7 points8 points ago

I was that totally that kid, too! The pastor at my school's church wasn't too happy when my five year old smug ass interrupted Genesis to point out the way the earth actually formed.... ALSO DINOSAURS MAN.

[–]SoggyStargazer 21 points22 points ago

DAE think it looks like Zach Galifianakis?

[–]thatpeterguy 32 points33 points ago

Fuck. I was like, "Hey, only 5 comments. I'll say something about Zach Galifianakis!"

You bastard.

[–]DrVonPimp 3 points4 points ago

Well played, you totally swaggerjacked his karma.

[–]thatpeterguy 7 points8 points ago

[–]davidduckface 0 points1 point ago

It's a art, my friend.

FTFY

[–]thatpeterguy 0 points1 point ago

Why are people giving you upvotes? I'm sorry, but you did not fix it. You made it wrong.

[–]davidduckface 0 points1 point ago

Because Reddit, that's why.

edit: also, if you don't get the reference that I was originally making you are new to the internet. Welcome aboard, sir.

[–]thatpeterguy -1 points0 points ago

Because Reddit, that's why.

No, I get this. I've been on reddit for about as long as you have, but it was confusing all the same. I don't usually witness people getting karma for turning a grammatically correct sentence into a grammatically incorrect one.

But balance has been restored, it seems.

[–]davidduckface 0 points1 point ago

You clearly haven't been on the internet as long as I have because my grammatically incorrect sentence is a meme originated on 4chan related to trolling.

And I honest didn't think it would work on reddit.

as such

[–]thatpeterguy 0 points1 point ago

You clearly haven't been on the internet as long as I have because my grammatically incorrect sentence is a meme originated on 4chan related to trolling.

Ah, yes. I have missed one joke, so you must be much wiser in the internet arts than I.

And I honestly didn't think it would work on reddit.

Actually FTFY

[–]SoggyStargazer 6 points7 points ago

Sympathy upvote for you :-)

[–]acherontia72 7 points8 points ago

its robert redford

[–]SoggyStargazer 4 points5 points ago

Of course its Robert Redford. :-)

Zach Galifianakis was three when Jeremiah Johnson came out.

Just clarifying that I knew it wasn't, but thought there was more than a slight resemblance.

[–]Sonorama21 2 points3 points ago

It looks exactly like him, it's that damn beard.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Up until reading this comment, I thought it was him.

[–]chronox21 3 points4 points ago

Jeremiah Johnson...fucking love that movie.

Just watched again recently over Easter.

[–]RamenAvenger 4 points5 points ago

I downloaded this movie just so I could see this scene. It's at 58:52.

I'm weird.

[–]JulyJohnson 1 point2 points ago

not weird. best movie ever.

[–]DrBackFat 6 points7 points ago

Upvote for JJ.

[–]The_Almighty_Lord 5 points6 points ago

Your sister is half right. I don't cause Earthquakes. Earthquakes are just a result of Kim Jong Un jumping around.

[–]Korbie13 1 point2 points ago

Maybe North Korea should focus on that and not missile technology.

[–]ccrazool 1 point2 points ago

Hail glorious leader!

Shame on my phone for not auto capitalizing "Glorious Leader"

[–]bayoomeh 1 point2 points ago

Upvote for your sister's upbringing.

I cannot image living in a society where these things need discussions in broader public. Funnily enough part of the reason for this is is because about 60 % of my countries population is roman catholic or evangelic.

[–]DoctorTurkleton 2 points3 points ago

[–]GrelodTheKind 1 point2 points ago

Just say no to reaction gifs posted as OPs... unless it is in /r/reactiongifs

[–]TriathlEnt 0 points1 point ago

Sweet a robert Redford flick I haven't seen before. Looking forward to checking it out.

[–]Keisaku 0 points1 point ago

What a treat you're in for. Look for his other movies as well.

[–]TriathlEnt 0 points1 point ago

The Natural is a top five dessert island one of my childhood favorites. I see a robert Redford Netflix weekend ahead.

Edited to get the cross outs right

[–]twent4 0 points1 point ago

Dessert Island sounds AWESOME

[–]TriathlEnt 1 point2 points ago

crap. I changed the spelling like three times last night. I couldn't remember which witch was which... if ya know what I know I mean.

[–]Managor 0 points1 point ago

[–]Daemonicus 0 points1 point ago

It's rather funny. My 10 year old nephew was taught about how when stars explode they spread their guts throughout space and seed it. My cousin who is 35 doesn't believe in evolution.

[–]a4moondoggy 0 points1 point ago

lol where does she go to school this guys back yard?

[–]Vrun 0 points1 point ago

ahahaha so good :D

[–]Konfused 0 points1 point ago

Jeremiah-fucken-Johnson, god i love that movie..

[–]JulyJohnson 0 points1 point ago

Big upvote for the JJ gif

[–]vandilx 0 points1 point ago

Upvote for Jeremiah Johnson.

[–]Robwyll 0 points1 point ago

the problem with such things is that many people dont know much about geography and physics... no matter if they are religious or not.

[–]Bodhisattva314 0 points1 point ago

Jeremiah Johnson approves this message

[–]trebleclefanie 0 points1 point ago

One thing I recently thought about is why God would make all the elements so dangerous to life. Why is it so easy to drown in water or to suffocate when there's a fire in your house? Why would he make earthquakes or tornadoes? Why? Because he doesn't exist.

[–]plus_ultra 0 points1 point ago

That really happened? Sad.

[–]CAPTAINxTRIPS 0 points1 point ago

This gif gets me every time

[–]shinsmax12 -1 points0 points ago

I like that /r/atheism has had more gifs showing up.

[–]orthag -1 points0 points ago

Plate tectonics and sea floor spreading have so much supporting evidence, it has passed theory and become fact. People need to deal with it.

[–]kestert 23 points24 points ago

*passed hypothesis and become theory

[–]aragorn18 15 points16 points ago

Yes, please don't confuse the term theory and fact as being different points along the same scaled of veracity. A fact is an individual piece of knowledge that you can observe or measure. A theory is an explanation for observable facts.

[–]orthag 0 points1 point ago

We can and do observe sea floor spreading, it moves at a measurable, albeit slow, pace.

[–]beamoflaser 7 points8 points ago

Yep theory is the highest level that we can explain these phenomena.

If only young earth creationists wouldn't get so hung up on that word.

[–]orthag 4 points5 points ago

And just kept going. We can see sea floor spreading happening right this very instant.

[–]croooked -2 points-1 points ago

i like muslims

[–]SnatcherSequel 1 point2 points ago

What sauce do you recommend to go with them?

[–]Fishticuffs -1 points0 points ago

NO DAD! NO!

[–]harper247 -1 points0 points ago

I love a fundie earthquake, not as much as a missing comma though. ;)

[–]Nyrin 1 point2 points ago

What?

There's no place in the title where a comma would make sense. If anything, it's missing a complementizer between "fundie" and "earthquakes," but it's clearly perfectly reasonable to have a null complementizer here--"I think you misunderstand" and "I think that you misunderstand" are both entirely natural.

Furthermore, a comma is not correct in your sentence here. You either need a conjunction like "but" or an alternative punctuation like a semicolon or em dash. This is too subtle to have been intentionally ironic.

[–]TejasKumar_ -1 points0 points ago

"Fun"dies are no fun at all.

[–]i_am_the_fish -2 points-1 points ago

Having a basic grasp of science isn't worth posting about.

[–]iamaravis -2 points-1 points ago

I wasn't sure if the dude in the gif was supposed to be you, your sister, or the fundy.
