Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

This is a picture of Minnie Woolsey, who was believed to have suffered from microcephalic primordial dwarfism. She is best known for her table dance in Tod Browning's excellent Freaks.

ONE OF US, ONE OF US

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

My family does this at holiday meals when someone is new at the table. I'm not kidding.

[–]KabelGuy 3 points4 points ago

Doesn't everyone's family do this? :D

[–]ethanwc 1 point2 points ago

I thought we were the only ones.

We watch it every Halloween.

We accept her, we accept her!

[–]BreakingNecks 2 points3 points ago

And that brings us to the golden age of video.

That movie, while interesting, creates so many mixed emotions. I hate to see those people victimized like that, but at the same thing, you do learn a lot about how human rights and respect have changed.

[–]sicsemperTrex 2 points3 points ago

It is definitely the kind of movie you could not make today. The climate for ignorance and intolerance for physically and mentally disabled people was permissive enough for that kind of movie. Ironically, while they--the "Freaks"--are portrayed as a tight knit even familial group at the circus, they are also made menacing at the climax of the film too. Take a look at this analysis of the film here

[–]Wilwheatonfan87 12 points13 points ago

I don't believe the film was made to exploit the circus "freaks" but moreso to paint them as people who are still human in every way, despite how they look or what they do.

and to be fair on the climax, they were attacking two people who tried to murder their own in a plot to steal his money.

[–]Johnzsmith 1 point2 points ago

I have to agree with you. I think this film painted them in much better light than most people not familiar with the film think. I also think that perhaps that is the main reason this film was banned for so many years in so many places.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

The climate wasn't actually that permissive. Freaks was banned for a long time, and was edited so much that parts of it are now lost. It was received so poorly that it essentially ended Tod Browning's career.

I don't see the film as ignorant or intolerant, though. The eponymous "freaks" are presented as good and honorable. The "normal" characters are totally cool with them. Only the antagonists treat them badly. I don't think this is ironic. Tod Browning traveled with a circus earlier in his life, and his experiences influenced the story and the characterizations.

[–]sicsemperTrex 0 points1 point ago

I meant that people were more inclined to ostracize the disabled back then, and Tod Browning seized on that sensibility and made a movie that depicts them in a good, human light. To his credit, it is a really inventing, engaging and profound premise. When I said you couldn't make a movie like that today, I meant because there is now such a widespread, mainstream acceptance and embrace of the disabled, that portraying them as "freaks" is, well, on par with a minstrel show I think.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Okay, I guess I pretty much agree with you, then.

Freaks is certainly an artifact of its time. Not only have cultural norms changed substantially, there are laws against "freak shows" displaying actual human deformities in some states. Nowadays, that niche is instead filled by sideshow performers a la The Enigma.

[–]sicsemperTrex 1 point2 points ago

"Artifact" is probably the best way to describe it. I wonder what movies and things now would be looked upon with the same curiosity one hundred years from now.

[–]buffettsgirl16 0 points1 point ago

That is an excellent analysis. I think one of the most amazing scenes in there is Prince R (I can't recall how to spell his name) is rolling the cigarette with his tongue. It is definitely a scene where the person with the "disability" was given more focus than the "normal" person.

Acceptance is an interesting thing - I had never considered the chant in that way. It is definitely a film worthy of consideration.

[–]SasparillaTango 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was porgeria

[–]kevka 1 point2 points ago

No, progeria is rapid aging.

[–]Vintagejosh 0 points1 point ago

I cancelled my DVD subscription to Netflix and this was the next movie I would have recieved. I am still kicking myself that I could not wait a little longer.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

You should do whatever you have to to see Freaks. It's a great film, and a fascinating piece of film history, too. There are quite a number of real "human oddities" featured in the movie, several with large roles. I suspect the film represents the only existing footage of many of them... certainly the only footage available to the general public, anyway.

Not great quality, but it seems to be the whole thing.

[–]Vintagejosh 1 point2 points ago

Thank you. You shall be remembered as procurer of happiness. May that one thing you wanted be yours.

Just a heads up, Frozo the Clown is a pimp.

[–]lafayette0508 0 points1 point ago

Hey! She's in a postsecret from this week: here.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Not to be a dick, but I'm pretty sure that's Betty Green, aka The Stork Woman. Betty Green did also use the moniker "Koo-Koo the Bird Girl," though, and also appeared in Freaks.

[–]lafayette0508 1 point2 points ago*

Oh ok. Sorry for the misinformation, folks! I'm not sure why you'd think this is being a dick. (unless you were trying to be.) They look very similar in these pictures and have the same name - it's not so far fetched that I'd think they were the same person, and correcting me isn't a big deal.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

No, I wasn't trying to be! I recognize that pedantry can be irritating and feel apologetic when I can't help but correct someone.

[–]lafayette0508 1 point2 points ago

Ok then :-) I think we're good!

[–]silent_p 0 points1 point ago

Is that Uncle Phil (from Fresh Prince of Bel Air)'s head on some sort of caterpillar body?

Is it just me or does it seem that the Looney Tunes 'the Dodo Bird' character was based off of this woman's costume? here's the best quality video i could find, sorry about the bad music over top of it.

[–]SpaceManDug 1 point2 points ago

I thought the music made it interesting.

I love the old-timey casual racism, or more like "othering" in Porky in Wackyland. He flies to "darkest Africa" where all the people are minstrel show caricatures, and everything is just plain wacky. It displays Africa as a different world full of craziness. I think it might have been an attempt to satirize those attitudes by playing them over the top, but it's been so long that Poe's Law has come into effect and the satire isn't as distinguishable.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I had no idea "Dough for the Do-Do" was a remake..!

[–]Malhavik 2 points3 points ago

Going to have to enable adblock for imgur again. Regular ads are fine but the video shit and sounds can fuck off.

[–]kabukistar 2 points3 points ago

The meaning of "Hipster" on Reddit has changed to pretty much "anybody who looks different."

[–]missmkay 1 point2 points ago

She did the duckface before it was cool.
