I have a question. When situations like this occur, is it possible that if you shoot the suspect while he has a gun pointed at the hostage's head, that he might have a knee jerk reaction where he pulls the trigger as he gets shot? Serious question. Whenever I see situations like this, it seems rather risky.

That's probably why they don't shoot every single hostage taker. It seems to be a last resort solution.

Depends on the level of skill of the sniper. There is a small region called the apricot, which is basically the brain stem, which if properly hit completely disconnects the brain from the body, and causes the body to go completely limp.

So basically it's not that dangerous if you're a good shot.

Source: season 2 of the tv show Justified, so maybe not wholly accurate.

no its accurate, not too sure about the "apricot" thing but youre right. i posted basically the same thing above you

[–]dboy999 2 points3 points ago

no. all law enforcement is taught to aim for the "t zone". basically put one hand kinda like a salute but all the way across your forehead, and another hand in the middle of your face. hence "t zone". most shots placed in that area will cause catastrophic damage to the brain stem, ceasing all bodily functions, period. there is no possibility for a "jerk reaction". regardless, being shot in any part of the head will more than likely lead to that anyway.

had he been shot in the arm/chest/leg etc, there would have been a chance for him to pull the trigger, but it would have been a conscious decision, not a jerk reaction.

Incorrect. Not all police are trained to take this shot. That is a very important and specialized shot. A patrol officer will not take that shot 99% of the time. That shot would be left to a sniper or marksman that trains for that shot constantly and can pull it off without risking the hostage.

its called the mozambique drill. all the cops i know (which is a lot) are trained to use it, patrol officer or sniper. 2 to the chest, 1 to the head (t zone).

although i wasnt referring to a hostage situation in my previous post. Im well aware that only snipers would take that kind of shot. my dad was one, had to take it a few times. never easy

[–]DerelictDiety 0 points1 point ago

Its a failure drill, used when you're rounds to center mass are ineffective, but not a shot you'd start with. You have to remember that the mantra thats drilled down our throats is "Shoot to stop the fight.", not "Shoot to kill." Head shots by a patrol cop would be a special situation, like body armor, massive body mass, PCP Blaster, etc..

[–]flappypisser 5 points6 points ago

im not a physician, but i dont think it would be a "knee jerk" reaction that would result in the firearm discharging...

it would seem to require more of a "finger jerk" reaction.

[–]fairwayks 5 points6 points ago

In this guy's case, he had a jerk reaction.

[–]RoodyFrigginPoo 0 points1 point ago

Im guessing that, if anything, he would release the gun, as he didn't see it coming. When most people are surprised, i see them jump, and drop everything they're holding.

[–]PompousAss 7 points8 points ago

That was an awesome shot.

Death number 4 on reddit today...

[–]Lukes_cool_Hand 0 points1 point ago

[–]Crochetniac 0 points1 point ago

Well, this is r/WTF

[–]Its_aTrap 1 point2 points ago

So..I have to be this guy, is there anyway someone can slow this GIF down and show it at half speed?

[–]pccrooks 1 point2 points ago

...and that makes six. Awesome day on r/wtf!

[–]ummmmyeaaaah 0 points1 point ago

Why did the drum slip out?

[–]HouseOfHouse 0 points1 point ago

Fuck that was a good shot. What about shrapnel like bone fragments hitting the hostage? Would that be something to consider for the shooter?

[–]TankorSmash 0 points1 point ago

That's barely NSFL

[–]lil_turkey_muffin 0 points1 point ago

boom nose shot

[–]Rynx-x -4 points-3 points ago

This belongs on /r/Gore...

[–]CejusChrist 2 points3 points ago

But I am completely ok with this being on /r/WTF.

[–]Crochetniac 1 point2 points ago

It may belong in r/gore, but it still belongs in r/wtf.
