When I was a teenager I had a friend online who was Australian, and she told me that her parents would get angry at her if she used the word mall instead of shopping center because it sounded "too American." Always stuck with me, that.

Related tidbit: Paul McCartney's father wanted him to change it to "she loves you, yes, yes, yes" because he thought "yeah" sounded too American.

As "not a huge fan of comics," I found From Hell to be exquisite.

[–]candygram4mongo 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From Hell is amazing but tends to get overshadowed by his more conventional (to the extent that anything Moore writes is conventional) superhero-ish stuff. Because that's what comics are, right? Superheroes?

[–]wvboltslinger40k 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]GamiSB 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Beyond amazing. It puts Watchmen to shame.

[–]WhiteHeather 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Promethea is pretty much what got me at all interested in comics. I picked up one at my local comic store because the cover reminded me of the Alice in Wonderland trial and I love Alice. Then I read it and turn of the century author John Kendrick Bangs was mentioned and I knew I had to collect the whole series. I can't say I'm a huge comic book fan in general, but everything I've read that Moore has written has been fantastic.

[–]round2ffffight 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can tell you have good taste, sir/madam. Have you read the Sandman series, Transmetropolitan, or Preacher? All of them also amazing.

[–]4c51 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You have just named the three other comic writer gods: Neil Gaiman, Warren Ellis, and Garth Ennis.

[–]xaxers 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Read the Boys. Garth Ennis is writing that one, and it's just as messed up as Preacher. Also has the same blowjob jokes in it. He must love saying wax the shaft.

[–]gasburner 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Every time I try to read Preacher I stop at I think his name was ass face. People keep telling me it's a great book but... ass face?

But yes Sandman is one of the greatest, trans-metropolitan is almost impossible to put down at some points just fantastic story telling.

I also like Hellblazer.

[–]round2ffffight 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And V for Vendetta. Much better than the movie. And The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Same scenario. Much more in depth story. Check 'em out! Also Moore believes that his graphic novels should not ever have been adapted into movies and so has not helped make any of them. Hence the shittiness.

[–]NaeemTHM 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a train wreck on multiple levels and it's a real shame most people will forever associate the movie with those characters (and not the awesome comic).

However I liked V for Vendetta for what it was. It was kind of it's own thing honestly. Yeah, I know the graphic novel is better but the movie certainly stands on it's own in my opinion.

While I agree that the novels are better, I disagree that the movies are at all shitty. I've never read League, but I did read both Watchmen and V for Vendetta before seeing the movies and I think they're good adaptations and great movies in their own right.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie was atrocious. Definitely read the comic and forget you ever saw the film adaptation.

He also worships a snake god and claims to have met his own comic creation, John Constantine, as he was walking through london at night once.

Abyss to Moore (in deep eerie voice that sounds both like one and a thousand voices at once): Alan. Our agreement still stands?

Alan to Abyss: it does. for now.

Kind of reminds me of Phillip K. Dick. PKD knew he wasn't actually receiving messages from some intergalactic artificial space god, but he just just sorta went with it.

Isn't insanity just the point where you stop knowing whether you're sane or not? PKD just went further than most while still keeping most of his mind intact.

I lived in a dream for eighteen months. A few tenants, but overall, no complaints about the state it was left in. I did a huge clean up, but found too many bottles of mini soy sauce. I was trying to make breakfast, but it was quite hard. So, I mean, if you catch my drift.

Obligatory Wikipedia: Alan Oswald Moore (born 18 November 1953) is an English writer primarily known for his work in comic books, a medium where he has produced a number of critically acclaimed and popular series, including Watchmen, V for Vendetta, and From Hell.[5] Frequently described as the best graphic novel writer in history"

So he kind of is a wizard. A wizard who casts awesome in everything he does.

TIL Rasputin was Boris the Blade

Wikipedia cut and paste:

Guseva thrust a knife into Rasputin's abdomen, and his entrails hung out of what seemed like a mortal wound. After intensive surgery, however, Rasputin recovered. The group led him down to the cellar, where they served him cakes and red wine laced with a large amount of cyanide. According to legend, Rasputin was unaffected, although Vasily Maklakov had supplied enough poison to kill five men. Yusupov ran upstairs to consult the others and then came back down to shoot Rasputin through the back with a revolver. Rasputin fell, and the company left the palace for a while. Yusupov, who had left without a coat, decided to return to get one, and while at the palace, he went to check on the body. Suddenly, Rasputin opened his eyes and lunged at Yusupov. He grabbed Yusupov and attempted to strangle him. At that moment, however, the other conspirators arrived and fired at Rasputin. After being hit three times in the back, he fell once more. As they neared his body, the party found that, remarkably, he was still alive, struggling to get up. They clubbed him into submission. After binding his body and wrapping him in a carpet, they threw him into the icy Neva River. He broke out of his bonds and the carpet wrapping him, but drowned in the river. Three days later, Rasputin's body, poisoned, shot four times, badly beaten, and drowned, was recovered from the river. An autopsy established that the cause of death was drowning.
