so people know - she did not die from the parasailing incident.

Seems like that brought a shit ton of attention to the matter when it happened and she was kept in a sanctuary and lived a pretty nice life until getting sick.

but this was definitely fucking despicable

[–]Ashton42 240 points241 points ago

whose brays of terror while parasailing

that poor fucking animal :(

[–]dmpinder 150 points151 points ago

Having not seen the original video, can they distinguish brays of terror from brays of joy?

[–]Richeh 129 points130 points ago

Generally by ascertaining that the equine in question is airborne.

[–]bozzwtf 70 points71 points ago

"Because the donkey was in the fucking air."

Pretty sure it was terrified.

[–]MaximumBob 1 point2 points ago

Blue balls. Being in the fucking air, with nothing else around.

[–]flexnerwinterstein 2 points3 points ago

there's something Monty Pythonish about your comment.

Sheep.

[–]Richeh 1 point2 points ago

This donkey has ceased to be.

[–]mamjjasond 36 points37 points ago

Or perhaps pain at being suspended from that harness like that

[–]Baron_Tartarus 6 points7 points ago

"no injuries were found on the animal after its ordeal."

[–]rhinosauras 13 points14 points ago

Doesn't mean it didn't feel any pain

[–]fresnik 1 point2 points ago

pain don't hurt

[–]obscenecupcake 58 points59 points ago

I can tell when an animal makes noises of fear versus noises of play for most species that i've come in contact with. it's usually really simple to tell. The body language from that clip alone shows that she is NOT HAPPY.

[–]korbonix 16 points17 points ago

I had a guy who'd never spent any time with cats before (he's from a non-pet country) take care of my cats one week while i was gone. My cat purred at him and he looked up cat sounds on youtube to make sure that they weren't threatening him.

[–]hugh_person 3 points4 points ago

This is all I could think of after reading your post: http://imgur.com/6OQ56

[–]obscenecupcake 1 point2 points ago

[–]eggo 1 point2 points ago

from a non-pet country

I'm curious, what country? Are pets just uncommon or are they banned?

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

Not sure why downvoted. Anyone with a brain can tell any animal is not going to react well to this.

[–]lemonman456 1 point2 points ago

What about a bird?

[–]cuppincayk 4 points5 points ago

Exactly. They're naturally meant for you to be able to tell the difference.

[–]carlcon 7 points8 points ago

Yeah, one occurs when you're being aggressively held down and harnessed, while the other doesn't.

[–]theoceanneverwantsme 1 point2 points ago

We are the eldritch abominations.

[–]iaccidentlytheworld 18 points19 points ago

Anapka spent her final months in animal sanctuary outside the city, where the newspaper said she lived in luxury, eating fresh fruit and vegetables, getting massages and even spending time in a solarium.

[–]kieuk 7 points8 points ago

Oh I guess that's all fine then!

[–]jc840 1 point2 points ago

"Although it is not clear when the animal died"

[–]cylon_agent 89 points90 points ago

I still lol'd because I'm a heartless fucking bastard.

[–]Wut_Du_Fuq_Iz_Brunch 64 points65 points ago

Upvote for honesty...dick

[–]ytayj 16 points17 points ago

Upvote for upvoting honesty.

Dear Christ, we're like depraved fantasy Paladins.

[–]spundnix32 9 points10 points ago

The donkey was braying and children were crying

poor kids, too :(

[–]ifightfirewithwater 2 points3 points ago

What I don't get is how it got down.. I mean, how the fuck did it even land?

[–]stealthpoop- 6 points7 points ago

What goes up must come down

[–]Freaky_Freddy 2 points3 points ago

never a miscommunication

[–]ohnowait 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is physics

[–]adammcbomb 1 point2 points ago

a lot of clever assholes commenting below you. But i feel the same way. How the hell did it land without breaking something? It's not as if para sails guide themselves.

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points ago

The donkey's flight over the Azov sea drew the attention of The Sun, which said it had bought the donkey and would take it to London, although there were suggestions the tabloid had bought the wrong animal.

They sold them a different donkey LOL...

...What da fuk...

[–]tacojohn48 27 points28 points ago

What a bunch of asses

[–]Vicker3000 12 points13 points ago

When I first read that, I didn't realize The Sun was capitolized. I imagined the benevolent, radiant sun descending from the sky to rescue the frightened animal and take the donkey away to his kingdom in the sky.

[–]CardboardHeatshield 3 points4 points ago

Kinda like when America bought London Bridge and noone told us it was the wrong one. Its payback, you bastards.

[–]Mediumtim 2 points3 points ago

Nooooo! I was laughing uncontrollably until I read that. Now I am slightly sad.

[–]iaccidentlytheworld 1 point2 points ago

Cheer up

Anapka spent her final months in animal sanctuary outside the city, where the newspaper said she lived in luxury, eating fresh fruit and vegetables, getting massages and even spending time in a solarium

[–]arcainic 8 points9 points ago

Now if they only tied a pig instead of donkey, I'd end up with a lot of overdue sweet sweet sexy time.

[–]crunklepat 1 point2 points ago

Buried comments like this deserves love!

[–]n1zm0 1 point2 points ago

i remember when they did this, my exact reaction was the same as this threads title, then sadness, all for a viral/advertising gig wasn't it?

[–]HighBeamHater 1 point2 points ago

It didn't die from the parasailing... apparently it lived in luxury for months after that fact. According to your article...

[–]xohne 1 point2 points ago

They did that to a 18-year old donkey?

[–]daderade 1 point2 points ago

yeah, that's the age of donkey consent in Mexico

[–]isometimesmakesense 50 points51 points ago

..mirror? why the fuck is the picture gone?

[–]kasajack 23 points24 points ago

[–]Resinball 1 point2 points ago

Okay i'm ridiculously glad I came back to check for this. Definitely not what I expected (I ignored the comments). Thank you.

HI, THIS IS DONKEY, AND WELCOME TO JACKASS.

[–]ReesesPoofs 177 points178 points ago

Hi, I'm literally a jackass, and welcome to jackass.

[–]on_the_redpill 5 points6 points ago*

I understand why this is cruel and all, but does it make me a bad person if I'm still laughing randomly about the idea of a parasailing donkey???

To make things even better I like to picture humans as just crazy ass apes. So in my head, some crazy ass apes strapped a donkey to some crazy ass technology to make it go airborne... just for shits. It's kind of hilarious.

[–]ifightfirewithwater 45 points46 points ago

HI, IM JACKASS, AND WELCOME TO DONKEY.

[–]ForgottenLore90 36 points37 points ago

HI, I'M DON. THIS IS JACKEY. DAT ASS.

[–]RawsIsCool 1 point2 points ago

This comment made me laugh like a retard. Thank you, kind sir.

[–]BilboBanginz 19 points20 points ago

HI THIS IS DONKEY AND WELCOME TO OH SHI...

[–]emilymp93 1 point2 points ago

I laughed way harder at this than the joke itself warranted...

[–]J973 455 points456 points ago

As someone who grew up on a farm.... I don't think this video is a bit fucking funny. That is a living and fairly intelligent animal that was terrified for it's life. It's pretty much animal torture. I am not an "animal rights activist" by any means, but cruelty for the sake of entertainment is just wrong.

[–]pyro138 113 points114 points ago

That's why it's in /r/WTF and not /r/funny

[–]obscenecupcake 45 points46 points ago

I know.... how can people ask "how do you know it's not happy". CAn't they TELL by it's body language? I grew up in the city, but even I've been around enough animals to tell it's having a fucking panic attack.

[–]J973 33 points34 points ago

Horses and donkeys can get terrified over a plastic bag flying in front of them. They don't like heights. They don't like going over high bridges. It pretty clear that they wouldn't want to be strapped to something and flown like a kite. I am honestly a bit surprised that it didn't go completely ape-shit and thrash out of the straps. I thought "this isn't going to end well".

[–]redditlibrarian 67 points68 points ago*

Definitely. They did the same thing to another animal somewhere for some advertising campaign and it died a few days later because of the stress this had caused.

Edit: Turns out it was this one. It died. :(

Edit2: My faulty memory. It wasn't "a few days", it was several months later.

[–]jhogan 57 points58 points ago*

It didn't die due to the event. This article clarifies that there were "no injuries" due to the "ordeal" and that it in fact lived a "life of luxury" post-event until an unrelated heart attack [EDIT: heart-related complications of an illness, actually] killed it.

Not that I'm defending the stunt. Totally agree it's animal cruelty.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

maybe it saw a parachute in the sky had a flashback which caused a heart attack and died, i should work for peta

[–]I_StoleTheTV 16 points17 points ago

That doesn't mean much to me. The donkey was 18 and that kind of stress could not have been good for her heart.

[–]gregny2002 1 point2 points ago

In the article I read it said that the donkey was 40.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

as an 18 year old human i can confirm this

[–]macktastick 7 points8 points ago

Can PTSD cause such things?

[–]kkatatakk 15 points16 points ago

Arguably, yes. Stress can cause heart attacks, and stress is a key component to PTSD. Not sure if that is the case here, but you could argue for it. Poor creature. This is just so very wrong.

[–]whatevers_clever 5 points6 points ago

when he says unrelated heart attack - she actually fell ill and died from heart complications while she was ill - and it was a pretty long time after the incident.

then again I think it said she was 18 years old and from my vast internet searching knowledge it looks like donkey lifespan is ~30yrs so that is pretty young to go.. but who knows if it was due to that or not.

[–]obscenecupcake 6 points7 points ago

it died of STRESS. seems pretty linked to me.

[–]Richeh 20 points21 points ago

It died - admittedly of a heart attack - nearly a year later, at the age of eighteen, being cared for in a sanctuary. It's my opinion that these people are cunts. But apart from the Guardian's uncharacteristically suggestive reportage, I think it's probably a bit of a stretch to say that she died as a result of being strapped to a parachute.

Personally, I'm tempted to suggest that advertising shitheads of this kind should be exposed to cruel, unusual and sadistically appropriate punishments. I'm probably wrong, but seriously. Fuck these people.

[–]redditlibrarian 1 point2 points ago

Yep! I'm not sure why I remembered "a few days later". It seems to have turned ill five or so months after the event and died a month after that. But... how many donkeys die of a heart attack? (I don't know the answer to this question.)

[–]nachoman456 1 point2 points ago

i work at a vet clinic and i must say this type of advertising / treatment makes me sick. If you arent absolutely sure that what you are doing will not harm the animal physically or mentally, dont fucking do it.

also, I really like how you do edits to make them smaller than the primary comment.

How do you do it?

[–]tyrroi 5 points6 points ago

If it makes you feel any better it was rescued.

[–]J973 7 points8 points ago

I am glad it was rescued, but it never should have went through it in the first place.

[–]lidleolme 3 points4 points ago

yes. and then some idiot posts a video of the cruelty on reddit and gets upvoted by other idiots. psychopaths get off on cruelty, i guess.

[–]Leprecon 720 points721 points ago

I think this is just sad. This is animal cruelty. That donkey has no idea what is going on and then all of a sudden it is flying. The closest equivalent would be waking up a person by throwing them of a bridge. Even if they have a parachute, it is a dick move.

[–]TheJamie 31 points32 points ago

[–]infamousOne 941 points942 points ago

More of an ass move than a dick move.

[–]Spooooooooooooon 18 points19 points ago

Please... Go on. ಥ͜  ಥ

[–]ThatGuyRememberMe 9 points10 points ago

Is the image not existing the image???? Or is there actually a damn flying donkey?? I MUST KNOW.

[–]rednecktash 107 points108 points ago

SHUT UP THIS IS THE HORSES DREAMS OF FINALLY BECOMING A UNICORN AND YOU TRY TO TAKE THAT AWAY FROM HIM SHUT UP SHUT UP

[–]yatpay 6 points7 points ago

Don't you mean a pegasus?

[–]fletchasketch 17 points18 points ago*

In what mythos do unicorns fly?

EDIT:

Apparently, flying unicorns is definitely a thing. I will adjust my vote accordingly.

Carry on, nothing to see here.

[–]GirlOnInternet 32 points33 points ago

Adult Swim games, obviously.

[–]N05f3r47u 13 points14 points ago

If that unicorn could fly, the game would be way easier.

[–]xb4s 1 point2 points ago

As god is my witness, I thought unicorns could fly.

Oh, the humanity.

[–]amandawong 1 point2 points ago

Maybe he meant Pegasus.

[–]PlatonicTroglodyte 1 point2 points ago

Madeleine L'Engle's A Swiftly Tilting Planet surges up the subconscious depths of my childhood. I believe there was a winged unicorn there that took the hero through the past to improve the future.

[–]MotharChoddar 1 point2 points ago

Alicorns fly.

[–]dreadfulpennies 1 point2 points ago

As a former little girl who routinely pretended to be She-Ra: Princess of Power, unicorns can fly when they have wings. The hierarchy of horses, roughly, goes:

Winged Unicorn

Unicorn

Pegasus

that horse Rainbow Bright had

Horse

Pony

[–]obscenecupcake 2 points3 points ago

wuh

[–]girlscantfight 117 points118 points ago

and this is basically the same top comment as the last time this repost was posted.. i use to not complain about reposts.. but now it's like the twilight zone with how the comments are matching up too. It's probably time to get off of reddit now for me.. :P

[–]finallycreatedaname 38 points39 points ago

See you again in a month making the same comment. (do do do do do do do)

[–]inf4nticide 5 points6 points ago

I love your phonetic take on the Twilight Zone music

[–]Leprecon 14 points15 points ago

Whoah, I haven't seen the other post but now I want to meet mirror Leprecon.

[–]wuzizname 7 points8 points ago

Stop complaining about reposts and go fucking play outside.

[–]Jumin 6 points7 points ago

Did you honestly think that people would go from "This is animal cruelty" to "haha that's funny!" or something along those lines?

Repost or not, I'm glad that the top comment is what it is each time!

[–]libertyordeath1 1 point2 points ago

Wait till you've been around a few more years. It gets to the point that you just accept that it's always going to be groundhog day...

[–]shitterplug 30 points31 points ago

That donkey has no idea what is going on and then all of a sudden it is flying.

Ha, made me laugh.

[–]TheIcelander 20 points21 points ago

I agree. That donkey is going to spend the rest of its life running into the ocean and wondering why it's not flying.

[–][deleted] 58 points59 points ago

Please. That donkey was freaked out for 2 minutes. The bacon you eat comes from pigs that live in a tiny cage the size of its body for its entire shitty (pun intended) life. The cows you get your milk from are kept pregnant constantly, and whn they do give birth, have their calves taken from them, driving mother and child into deep confused depression. THAT'S sad - this gif is just stupid.

[–]amandawong 49 points50 points ago

Something is not made less bad simply because there is something worse going on also. I would say that all the situations you named, along with this gif, are all sad situations.

[–]armoguy94 14 points15 points ago

You bring up such a good point. But I disagree; this is still sad. They are all examples of torture.

[–]cohrt 12 points13 points ago

The cows you get your milk from are kept pregnant constantly, and whn they do give birth, have their calves taken from them, driving mother and child into deep confused depression.

[–]BaconOnEverything 2 points3 points ago

Or great-uncle.

[–]neimer 1 point2 points ago

That's how it works in those PETA videos he saw, though.

[–]Balikokho 3 points4 points ago

I'm so tired of PETA their videos are hand picked of poorly kept farms and then everyone thinks that's how all farmers treat their animals. Then you get people like Loiteringhippo here spreading false numbers and making out like our farms in this country are giant meat factorys when in fact they are not. I grew up on a farm and my entire family and friends are all farmers and nobody I know keeps animals that way. Some of them are chicken breeders for tyson too. Wake up people PETA is lying to you, go visit a local farm and see for yourself.

[–]Balikokho 1 point2 points ago

Hi there, grew up on a milk farm. Pretty sure you have no idea what you talking about concerning female cattle and how they give milk. We also have plenty of pig farmer friends from the area too, your descriptions are like something spoon fed from a vegetarian whos never visited a farm. Please visit your local farmer and experience how farms actually work before you comment like this again, thanks.

[–]PlatonicTroglodyte 2 points3 points ago

I'll have to disagree. Calling this animal cruelty is really just mirror imaging our sentiments into the mind of the donkey. In reality, we can know nothing of what the donkey is thinking. People assume that because it is more commonplace, loading a donkey up with a couple hundred pounds of cargo and forcing it to travel long distances with it is somehow less cruel than flying it through the air for a couple of minutes. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but the mentality of 'this isn't normal, therefore it is cruel' is absurd.

There are plenty of dogs that get noticeably uncomfortable in cars. One could say they get motion sickness, and so putting them in a car would be cruel. Other dogs, however, clearly enjoy the experience, and even stick their heads out the window to get the most out of it. Why should we expect it to be different for donkeys? Perhaps this donkey was fearing for its life, but perhaps it was having the time of its life. You can't really know either way. I understand the mentality of 'well, if we can't tell, it's better safe than sorry,' but that's different from classifying it as animal cruelty. Calling it animal cruelty is just as wrong as calling it the donkey's dream come true. We just can't really tell.

[–]munge_me_not 22 points23 points ago

What if the donkey loves it? Where is your god then?

[–]Pooters 1 point2 points ago

Shut up you idiot. This donkey is clearly having a great time.

[–]ProSoviet 1 point2 points ago

I think this was in Russia. Don't worry though, the donkey was rescued and was given 'Tsar' like treatment afterwards. That's what I read in the news. Not sure if charges were brought up against those people. It was actually a publicity stunt by a company. Can you believe this shit?

[–]KrishanuAR 1 point2 points ago

Not really. There is no sense of vertigo when parasailing. It just feels like sitting in a chair with a great view.

Source: I've been parasailing.

I think it's probably polite to not strap them into extreme pursuits until we've found a way of asking them. I think you should, at the very least, err on the side of assuming that mammals who haven't been further off the ground than a foot in several thousand years of anecdotal records probably don't want to fly.

And personally, while we don't have any hard evidence on either side, I'd like to put it on the record that donkeys have always struck me as a species that relish boredom.
