Sounds about right, three months is about what it took me from initial discovery of reddit and being a southern baptist to realizing I was an Atheist.

As long as you don't try to force your faith upon others, I'm fine with this.

?

[–]vita_man 7 points8 points ago

So those front-page posts about atheists on "conversion crusades"...

...are just people who are stating their observations and happen to be upvoted to the front page. Still not forcing their beliefs on anyone.

[–]Immynimmy 12 points13 points ago

I'm not a Christian, but I have never seen a post in /r/Christianity with a screenshot of facebook mocking atheists or even arguing with atheists to any degree.

[–]fermatafantastique 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But if you spend 5 min on r/atheism, you'll see plenty of Christians arguing with and mocking atheists on Facebook. It goes both ways, we just have facts, so it makes it more fun.

[–]Immynimmy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but the atheists are always the transgressors. Plus, what satisfaction do you get out of mocking someone's personal beliefs? Is it supposed to be cool to be a dick to someone?

[–]fermatafantastique 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never once mocked anyone's faith to their face in my life. Mostly because I was raised among rational, intelligent people, even the religious ones. Yet I live in a country that makes many of it's laws based on the (IMO) psychotic belief in a big scary sky man. So I come to /r/atheism to read funny anecdotes or encounters posted by people with more direct contact to this huge demographic.

I would also point out that it's your opinion that atheists are always the transgressors. On the contrary, my experience has been that the religious people are usually posting the more inflammatory views or beliefs, with atheists countering with science and unbiased beliefs. If we seem extreme, it's because we are arguing for human rights, a factually-based understanding of the world, and an end to religious bickering over which sky man is right (again, atheism is not a religion. That's hard for many theists to understand, but for the most part, we don't have "beliefs" we have facts, and our views of the universe are constantly subject to change).

[–]Raylour 20 points21 points ago

I've also never seen an atheists threaten to kill a christian over different beliefs.

To be honest I can understand why Christians would be upset that this stuff was posted on /r/atheism. I wish that it wasn't a default reddit so that we could say what we want or, in the case of those gentlemen in the back, circle jerk without shoving our beliefs down other peoples throats. This should be a place where we can say whatever the fuck we want that relates to atheism but since it is on the front page it seems like we are shoving shit down everyone's throat. /r/christianity is not on the front page and I would not like to see it on the front page but I imagine that you guys feel the same way about /r/atheism. I am not ashamed to be atheist but I hate the rep this subreddit gets since it became a front page subreddit.

[–]Smurfie90 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Christian here, the r/atheism posts don't really bother me, I find most of them pretty hilarious actually. I don't have a problem with it being a default because it takes a grand total of about 2 clicks to remove it if you don't want it :)

It is fine as long as it is contained to /r/atheism. It is reasonable for /r/atheism to shove its own religion down each others throat cause we are all atheist and no one cares. The fact that it gets on the front page sucks. The same problem could happen with /r/christianity if it was made a default subreddit. I think that was a mistake on the reddit admins part, to make /r/atheism a default. /r/all can't be controlled and if you don't like that /r/atheism is there then, not trying to offend anyone, you are shit out of luck unfortunately. I do not blame /r/atheism or the reddit admins for this.

[–]fermatafantastique 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Atheism is not a religion, and not a belief. It is simply the facts of science. Saying a man in the sky created you and you go to hell for not worshipping him is cramming your beliefs down others' throats. Presenting facts of science, even in a tongue-in-cheek way, is not. You wouldn't accuse algebra teachers of "shoving their beliefs down our throats." Well, I don't know, maybe some Christians would...

[–]Raylour 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

See the thing is at this point there is a large enough group of people that say some parts of science are not fact. While you may feel they are likely wrong, obviously they don't. Say atheism is correct and you have seemingly undeniable proof that their is no god. Some Christians would still not believe you because, simply, ignorance is bliss. And yes you showing evidence of why they are wrong to them will seem to them like you are trying to destroy their happiness because that is what religion is to them. Not everyone is accepting of the likely possibility that we will just cease to exist after we die and frankly I don't blame them.

[–]Herpinderpitee 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The fact that people enjoy the content enough to place it on the front page sucks? Do you hate the reddit voting system in general, or just the fact that it sometimes exposes you to other viewpoints that make you uncomfortable?

[–]simbora 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think theres a difference between exposing alternate viewpoints and whats going on in most belief based threads. There's generally no civil line of discussion, and instead turns into a circlejerk of like minded people, and badgering those who aren't of that school of thought.

[–]Raylour 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No it is not that people enjoy it enough to put it on the front page. It is that it is on the front page by default. When you first join reddit you will notice that a select few subreddits are on the front page. This was done by popularity in most cases. Though I feel that in the case of only putting /r/atheism on the front page it has caused a lot of reddit to be very one sided. Maybe a religious discussion subreddit would be better. Even though atheism isn't technically a religion it would definitely still fall into religious discussion just like on social networking it falls into religious views. Alternative view points do not make me uncomfortable. In fact hearing alternative view points is the only way to fully understand an issue. Look at it this way, an athiest would probably feel the same way if /r/christianity was a default subreddit but /r/athiesm wasn't.

As for /r/all, that is all based on what is most popular on reddit as a whole. I should clarify what I was saying early. I do not think /r/atheism should be a default subreddit due to it contributing to the already very biased hivemind of reddit. If an /r/atheism post makes it to the front of /r/all then if people don't like it they are shit out of luck because that is how reddit is meant to work. I think voting is perfect on what reaches the top of the subreddit and /r/all. I love voting. I do not like /r/atheism on the front page by default.

I feel like I'm going in loops with my words but I hope I made myself clear.

[–]mickeyc 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's really easy to mock somebody for saying or doing something irrational. It's pretty difficult to successfully mock somebody for saying something rational.

Just saying.

[–]Immynimmy -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wait, so you just basically said that /r/atheism does it because they think they're right and Christians are crazy? How does that justify mocking people online?!

That statment makes /r/Christianity look like nice people (which I'm sure a lot are) and /r/atheism look like a bunch of vindictive trolls that like to mock people online.

EDIT: Nevermind, I misread your comment. But still the theory stands.

[–]Vimsefreet 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Religion ruins many of our lives and are obstacles for our freedom in many places. Christians get to vent their frustrations on national television, over the war on christianity. Atheists have a subreddit, so go figure. Religion is a jerk in real life, atheism is a jerk online.

[–]mickeyc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you agree or disagree with my statement?

"It's really easy to mock somebody for saying or doing something irrational. It's pretty difficult to successfully mock somebody for saying something rational."

[–]Immynimmy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pertaining to what? Atheism/theism or just in general?

I mean, obviously I'm not gonna, say, mock someone for saying that they like Macs or mock someone for saying that their name has 5 letters in it.

[–]mickeyc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In general. The original comment. The one I then repeated but surrounded in quotation marks. Do you agree with it or not?

The point I am trying to make is that maybe this is the explanation for why the mocking is one sided? If Atheists were being irrational and Christians rational, maybe the mocking would be going the other way? That sounds reasonable to me...

[–]wayndom 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The folks on r/Christianity are nice people. I go there frequently. But people like Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Pat Robertson, etc., etc., etc., are NOT nice people, and if they had their way, this country would be a theocracy, as fucked-up as Iran, just with a different holy book.

They are the people I mock, and they deserve to be mocked, at the very least.

never have I seen someone so intelligent fight so hard against something he doesn't believe exists--ghandi

It's not worth the effort. the more an atheist fights, the more they just become anti-theist. If probed enough, you can almost find some who claim to be atheist but are really just anti-Christian. like the atheist who says he has a soul.

[–]wadetype 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are they not as free to state their beliefs as those who believe that anyone who doesn't believe in the same mythological figure I choose to worship will go to spend an eternity in a flaming pit of torture?

[–]BeastWriter 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yes, but it's hypocrisy-we Christians believe that we're saving you from the pit of fire when we "force our faith on others." Atheists on this website post stories about "trying to convert people" and other such bravery and don't see the hypocrisy in telling others not to do it. Just because Reddit is ruled via tyranny of the masses doesn't mean that a person can't express a unpopular view

And before we go on, I've been here before and I don't have time for this tonight. I have a test tomorrow, it's quantum mechanics, and I've barely studied. If you still really want to get into it, PM me in 24 hours

[–]wadetype 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not hypocrisy. Literally.

Hypocrisy would be probably be defined as silently being part of the long-ruling tyrant masses and then complaining when a different group of people, who you claim to be tyrants, disagree with your opinion.

[–]kingssman -4 points-3 points ago

Santa Clause isn't real. nobody should believe in Santa. Santa is a judgmental all knowing asshole who only gives presents to children who behave. We must inform the world about the dangers of believing Santa and remove Santa from our schools and community.

we mustn't indoctrinate our children with belief in Santa Clause.

[–]Smurfie90 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

WHAT! but where do my presents come from?

[–]NibblyPig 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know I'll get downvoted for this, but even nice people who have faith are essentially carriers that perpetuate it, and sooner or later someone will twist it into hate.

[–]vita_man 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unfortunately, you are right. I personally just want everyone to be happy. If I were president, I would decree that as long as you are not hurting someone else, you can do whatever the fuck you want.

[–]NibblyPig 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you may have misunderstood me. I don't think being religious classes as something that doesn't hurt other people. Even if you're the kindest, nicest religious person in the whole world, you're still teaching from a book filled with hate, and although you may have chosen to ignore the parts that bash homosexuals and condone violence to women and condemn non-believers to hell, friends, children, and people you expose to your faith may (and do) decide to embrace those sections.

When you see a religious extremist, his or her parents weren't always religious extremists.

I see religious people as carriers of a disease. It doesn't always manifest itself with them, but they'll pass it on. I guess this connects with the whole meme thing.

[–]vita_man 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

At any rate. I agree with you. The book you are referring to is far outdated and we need to come up with a new book that speaks of only peace, morality and equality.

for me, belief in a soul and higher power is part of human evolution. It what separates me from animal. I even invented my own religion for myself that I don't share with anyone. For some of us in America, the internet is the first and only place we're exposed to information contrary to Christian doctrine. It's not an immediate conversion, but looking at your religion from the other side of the fence for the first time can change you.

I live in Georgia and I can confirm this. Christianity as an idea is treated with the same confidence from the general public as gravity. It's just obviously true, and requires no more thought (yes I know gravity is much more complicated than this, but I couldn't think of a better example). Most of us have thought about religion a lot because we were pushed to by somebody that we met or something that we read. For a lot of people, that something is the internet.

[–]kentrado 1 point2 points ago

Impossible. Critical thinking is not thinking a lot. Critical thinking is a discipline, you can't have my critical thinking as opposed to everybody else's critical thinking.

With critical thinking you evaluate evidence in order to determine whether a claim is true or false. There is no evidence for the existence of God, therefore you can't determine that God exist by using Critical Thinking.

Either you are not using Critical Thinking or you have some evidence about the existence of God, which is highly unlikely.

I'm not bisexual. I'm just gay. But at lease I'm not a FREAK! =D Actually, I'm kinda vanilla. No weird fetishes here!

This only goes to show that you have learnt nothing. You seem to cling to your irrational beliefs despite all the evidence shown to refute the existence of this fictional character called God (with a capital G).

Actually, I've leared a considerable amount from this subreddit. I've met intellectual folks here who pose interesting questions, and engage in stimulating discussion. I've never thought to overtly proselytise here as I wouldn't want to insult another's held worldview, even if it differs considerably from my own. I've even come to admire the basis for Pastafarianism, although I probably won't bring it up in Sunday School! Occasionally I meet folks like you, but fortunately those enounters are few.

>I've leared a considerable amount from this subreddit

Like what? Can't see any evidence pal.

>I've never thought to overtly proselytise

I Did not mean to "proselytise" but educate? Maybe.

>Occasionally I meet folks like you, but fortunately those enounters are few.

Fortunate? Hardly. If you only seek the company of people who don't care enough to confront you and take issue with your asinine beliefs then it is you who is getting a raw deal out of this experience.

Can't see any evidence pal.

What would you consider evidence?

If you only seek the company of people who don't care enough to confront you and take issue with your asinine beliefs then it is you who are getting a raw deal out of this experience.

I'm all for discussing differences in beliefs, but if the other party isn't willing to show me the same respect as I have for their opinions, then I'd rather move on to someone who is. Generally, if I'm having a discussion with someone who insists on using pejoratives to describe my beliefs, that's someone who is not open minded.

Speaking of proselytising...

I'm new to reddit, but this is something rare- A christian being accepting and open-minded, and an atheist being aggressive and close-minded.

If you only seek the company of people who agree with you, how are you ever going learn anything new? Or have you "learn't" it all?

[–]indian_rationalist 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do believe there is some merit in the idea of learning from the self deluded and brain washed; at the very least it will help you test your endurance for bullshit.

As for being aggressive, life does that to you when you are drowning in a sea of morons.

I am more than willing to learn from sane and rational people, what I will not do is gladly suffer fools.

Yes, tell me about all this evidence you have against the existence of God.

[–]indian_rationalist 0 points1 point ago

There is a ton of evidence floating around refuting every claim ever made in support of establishing God as a real entity. You just need to open your eyes and educate yourself.

This is why I'm starting to hate this subreddit, you get mad for people Forcing their religion down people's throats, but you guys condescend, and belittle anyone who disagrees with you.

Not only are you not spending 50 bucks, you, sir, have been provided with a super bestie test. No need to thank me....Use it well.

Nah, the way I see it it, if Christianity's claims can't handle a little critical thinking then Jesus really is no different than the FSM; it's better to suffer through finding the truth (regardless of its implications) than rest in the false hope of a lie, no? (IAmA Christian addicted to reddit and all for it)

Well, losing faith in God, I mean. His faith in humans might take a huge hit, though.
