"Hey man, I bet you 100 bucks I could hit that target 100m away with my gun standing on one foot."

[–]Yboc 106 points107 points ago

I posted some pics of him a while back, and when I asked for permission from the guy who took the photos, this was part of the reply:

Listen, I implore you to post it where ever you want. Spread it across the globe to show the world that you might blow the leg off of a Marine Corps Scout Sniper...but , as soon as we heal we are coming back to shoot you in the fucking face at 1000yds.

Thought that was awesome.

[–]1stOnRt1 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This may be a stupid question...

But why wouldnt he just lay prone and use his bipod like the other snipers...?

[–]Yboc 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not sure, maybe he does. But that doesn't make as cool of a picture.

[–]dieselgeek 3 points4 points ago*

I posted some of these pics a long while back, and someone asked the same question. The answer is easy, your target can't always been seen while you're prone.

I'm a long range tactical/practical shooter, and shooting prone in matches is a luxury. If we are prone, the target is hard to reach, moving, popping up at un known distances, or we're shooting a KYL ( know your limits) kind of stage.

Although I will NEVER voluntarily join the armed forces, I will always hold those who do in the highest regard for their courage and their undying will to fight for what they love.

They really, really love killing people.

[–]chowlab9292 3 points4 points ago

Joke or no joke, this kind of comment is really not acceptable given how much we owe our armed forces. Do not belittle their sacrifices, and don't abuse the right to free speech to criticize the people who earned it for you. This is the harsh reality of the world right now, but it's not our place to stand on our soapboxes.

[–]Antigonish 9 points10 points ago

Found a caption

Sgt. Jason Pacheco, 23, scout sniper instructor, Division Schools, 1st Marine Division, from Las Vegas, N.M., uses his prosthetic leg as support for an M40 Sniper Rifle on a firing range at Camp Pendleton Aug. 30, 2011. Pacheco suffered a severed leg after an improvised explosive device detonated beneath him during a patrol in Afghanistan August 2010. His leg had to be amputated below his knee. Pacheco uses his prosthetic leg to support the weight of his rifle to show an example of how students can use anything to steady a rifle. He has been an instructor for the Pre-Scout Sniper School since March and recently completed a physical fitness test with his prosthetic leg. He has re-enlisted and said he hopes to continue training in preparation to return to full duty. (Official U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Timothy Lenzo)

[–]MrEShay 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I really like this caption and this guy's dedication. But shouldn't he be teaching his students to make as many points of contact between the rifle and the ground/solid support? I'm not in the military so I don't know...

[–]Couldnotbefound 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Military snipers are trained to only have two points of contact with their weapon, their cheek and the hand on the trigger. This allows for the other hand to be used for other things if necessary like grabbing a pistol if someone comes into your hide

[–]MrEShay 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh that's pretty cool I never knew that! Don't you want to hold the butt of the gun firmly into your shoulder though? I thought that would help dampen recoil. :/ Also what I meant about points of contact between the gun and ground is the idea that a monopod is less stable than a tripod. In the picture he's elevating the center of gravity of the gun and it seems to be more prone to wobble. Wouldn't your shot be more accurate if you set it on a lower rest?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you can shoot like a boss with only two points of contact imagine what you could do with three or more.

Touche brother. :D

[–]Couldnotbefound 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It definitely would but for one shot it wouldn't be bad. Definitely not as stable as a bipod or tripod but you work with what you've got. You can pull the rifle in pretty stiff to your shoulder with just the pistolmgrip.

[–]mopar68 26 points27 points ago

Do the armed forces really let Marines who have been injured that badly come back and fight on the front lines? Seriously, I have no idea and I find this kind of interesting. That's a lot of dedication right there.

[–]darkscyde 6 points7 points ago

I don't believe I have ever seen, or heard of, an amputee sniper deployed to a warzone in my entire life.

[–]gazzthompson -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

doesn't mean they, or this man, can't be deployed.

[–]darkscyde -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Perhaps I should have been clearer. There is no way this man is deployable or deployed as a US Marine sniper. It's just not going to happen until prosthetic technology improves a bit more.

I've heard of disabled soldiers operating downrange but they were mostly officers or support jobs. NEVER a sniper.

[–]gazzthompson 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Joseph kapacziewski disagrees with you . US ranger platoon leader. Probably the most demanding role you can be I'd imagine.

I've heard of disabled soldiers operating downrange but they were mostly officers or support jobs. NEVER a sniper.

...

The Rangers were skeptical. No one in Kap's condition had qualified for a return to direct combat. There are two other amputees serving in the Rangers, but neither is qualified for direct combat operations.

Kap how ever, as far as I know, is. Proving my point.

[–]darkscyde 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sorry but I disagree. A US Ranger has a very demanding job but it cannot compare to any sniper role. One requires much more stealth and autonomy than the other...

i have seen this before and i remember reading on reddit of all places that it is a program to allow wounded soldiers to return and 'finish' with their squadron. often there is the survivor's guilt or the 'hey i got to go home but my buddies are still out there' feeling. this way returning to active duty allows for a sense of closure. i read it here so i dont know how much of it is true but here i found a link on NPR about a book on soldiers returning to active duty.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

depending on the severity of the injury... if he can continue doing his job, has been cleared by the dr's and if he still wants to stay in, yes, they can stay in...

Maybe it's an ignorant stereotype I don't know, but it seems like the Marines do every thing they can to take care of their crippled veterans and retain them, while the Army tries to shuffle them under the rug and discharge them after minimal medical care.

[–]atlaslugged 0 points1 point ago

Looks like that weapon has a bipod on it, so what's the point of this?

[–]SirRipo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The point is that just because you have a bipod doesn't mean you can use it all the time. And actually, this approach is basically a monopod or shooting stick, which some hunters use when they don't necessarily have the time to set up a full bipod. http://i.imgur.com/TXjVv.jpg

The point is that it's a stable platform from which to shoot, that gives you a more elevated view than the bipod would provide (the bipod would extend, at best, to double the height it is in the picture, which means the rifle would only sit about 8-12 inches off the ground).

A lot of guys who loose limbs are given the chance to stay on active-duty through instructor roles, shooting team members, administrative positions, etc. This is when you know somebody just wants to serve, which I think is beautiful.

[–]I_dont_see_why_not -1 points0 points ago

I don't have any real training on sniping but... isn't that a horrible position to be sitting in? shouldn't he be in prone for a more stable shot?

[–]SirRipo 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In order of worst to best positions, it's typically: standing is worst, then sitting, and very close to that, prone is the most stable.

However, the sitting position he is employing is a tad...unorthodox, at least from what I've learned over the years. However, he still has a pretty stable platform from which to shoot. A sitting position usually means crossed legs, and you shoot kind of "across" your body (think of throwing a pass in football, your throwing arm - or in this case the shoulder your rifle rests on - is at the back). Alternatively you can leave your legs apart. Both of those variations dictate resting your elbows on your knees.

[–]jblo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sitting is far better for visibility, and isn't that much worse than prone for shots under 1000m.
