Thank you for commenting on this. I mentally was cursing at imgur while waiting for the picture to open.

[–]bayxsonic 2 points3 points ago

Oh, you (audio)

[–]chouffee 1 point2 points ago

That right there, Sir, has made my entire day. I may as well go back to bed because nothing else can make me laugh as hard as that. Well done.

[–]The_Painted_Man 0 points1 point ago

... thankyou?

[–]chouffee 0 points1 point ago

....you'rewelcome? edit: misspell

[–]The_Painted_Man 0 points1 point ago

Why, hello Miss Pell, how are you on this fine sunny afternoon?

[wink]

[–]chouffee 0 points1 point ago

Been in bed all day after reading that wonderful comment you posted. I didn't want my day spoiled when it started out so well. [blush]

[–]The_Painted_Man 0 points1 point ago

Why are you in bed all day?

[–]Monkeys_with_Guns 1 point2 points ago

Why is it 1152x648? Download less, make it 10x10 or something. I'm just thinking about the efficiency.

[–]The_Painted_Man 5 points6 points ago

This is why we don't let monkeys have guns...

[–]kragmoor 2 points3 points ago

[–]Blipblipbloop 17 points18 points ago

What I find the most astounding as a Canadian are all the hateful facebook posts. It just boggles my mind that some people can be so horrible to other people! I have never once seen a post like that on my newsfeed.

[–]Go_Deep_Or_Go_Home 12 points13 points ago

I know right? Once had a debate with a religious friend on facebook, ended with us both agreeing to disagree and wishing the other a good night.

[–]Gemini4t 2 points3 points ago

Don't forget you both said sorry!

[–]RickSHAW_Tom 1 point2 points ago

My last religious debate ended when I asked why he pit something he knew I would find offensive on my wall. I think it made him feel like a dick because he asked how many time I watched it. I said once and he never responded.

[–]GearsOfZelda 0 points1 point ago

Once I found this website listing 50 reasons that god hates Canada. Told them to f**k off in the comments.

[–]RickSHAW_Tom 1 point2 points ago

Huh. They got tired of hating on the gays. It's only a matter of time before they start on gay Canadians, eh?

[–]GearsOfZelda 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, eh! Those "Eh Gays" will be outlawed thanks to the hypocritial christians, eh?

[–]RickSHAW_Tom 0 points1 point ago

So why DO they hate canada?

[–]leechsucka 3 points4 points ago

I never have either, and I'm American.

[–]Vidyadhara 2 points3 points ago

Have been wondering about this myself. Is this a particularly common American phenomenon, where you argue about, let alone even mention, religion on Facebook?

[–]GearsOfZelda 86 points87 points ago

[–]engineer4prez 2 points3 points ago

Seriously! As a Canadian it's hard to believe some of the ridiculous shit you hear bout 'merica.

It's nice to truly live in a country that actually has the right to religious freedom.

[–]Auzzy10 5 points6 points ago

I don't know what part of Canada you live in, but Alberta couldn't be much more religious

[–]ohypnot1c 5 points6 points ago

it sucks i told my sister i was an atheist and she kinda flipped shit

[–]Auzzy10 5 points6 points ago

I once overheard my sister say "There better not be any atheists in this house"

[–]after_hour 3 points4 points ago

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Canada#Christianity_and_Immigration

See that chart there? Alberta actually has less Christians as a percentage of population than most of the other provinces. Also a higher than average percentage of non-religious.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irreligion_in_Canada

EDIT: added second link

[–]ImabucketRAWR 2 points3 points ago

In Alberta the problem isn't really the number of Christians. The proportion of fundamentalists and young earth creationists. The conservative mindset that plagues most of Alberta doesn't help either.

[–]after_hour 1 point2 points ago

I'm from Alberta, and to be quite honest, I don't think fundamentalism is much of a problem. I've also never met anyone here who would describe themselves as a young earth creationist.

Also, I think the popularity of the conservatives here mainly comes from economic concerns. People here are extremely concerned with the economics of politics, more so than social issues.

[–]TheMighty8th 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, out here religion would just get in the way of making money.

[–]after_hour 2 points3 points ago

Who would want to tithe away all of our sweet, sweet oil money?

[–]phillycheese 2 points3 points ago

Realize that the funnies of Alberta are considered super left wing in the states.

[–]Worstdriver 7 points8 points ago

Um, have you read our Constitution?

CONSTITUTION ACT, 1982(80) PART I CANADIAN CHARTER OF RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS

Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law: Guarantee of Rights and Freedoms

Rights and freedoms in Canada

  1. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society. Fundamental Freedoms

Fundamental freedoms

  1. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:

(a) freedom of conscience and religion;

(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;

(c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and

(d) freedom of association.

[–]AskingOnce[S] 5 points6 points ago

Yes, I know our freedoms, but no I have not personally read it.

Bonus: heh reddit.

[–]Buscat 7 points8 points ago

American constitution: says nothing about god, they act like it does.

Canadian constitution: mentions god, we act like it doesn't.

[–]chouffee 0 points1 point ago

The very first line in our first amendment goes ignored constantly: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." It's very sad that this country is turning religious. I don't remember it being this bad when I was young.

[–]YzermanToLidstrom 3 points4 points ago

Our charter is pretty much useless because of section 33 . It allows the federal/any provincial government to opt out of any section of the charter that deals with personal freedoms (religious, speech, ect). So, we have a de facto separation of church and state, I guess. If the government ever tried to say, turn Canada into a theocracy they would lose most of their voter support rather quickly, and the opposition parties could capitalize on it.

On the other hand, if Canadians become as religious as Americans the country is fucked. So really if we had something similar to the American's Treaty of Tripoli where it states our country isn't founded on any religion I'd feel much better.

[–]Daemonicus 1 point2 points ago

Good thing Canadians are becoming less religious as time goes on.

[–]leejs 0 points1 point ago

Let's not forget our leader was 'personally chosen' by god.

[–]dennis09x 2 points3 points ago

I'm Canadian, born and raised in Ottawa, and I have dealt with my fair share of fundie BS. I was told that I was going to hell by a girl I considered a friend in high school, and most recently got into a heated debate with some other Canadians over a piece that the Sun News ran called "attack of the atheists". It was pretty much just like every other FB screen shot that you see here, but we're Canadian. And, as other people have pointed out, we have some wacko religious people making major governmental decisions in our country too, so it's not like we're exempt from the insanity. I can definitely relate to a lot of the posts on this subreddit, despite being Canadian.

[–]Mekkkah 1 point2 points ago

Wait, your head isn't split into two by your mouth?

[–]TheCrackedRecord 1 point2 points ago

Oh Gus, so funny.

[–]Shinsoku 1 point2 points ago

[–]DamnDjinni 1 point2 points ago

Our fundies may not be as vocal but they are still around...and multiplying. At least it looks like to me, but then again I've always had the bad luck of running into quacks o.0

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

How does being Canadian give you this face when browsing /r/atheism?

[–]Guiseybaby 10 points11 points ago

Because (assuming you're american) he doesn't have to deal with all the fundie bullshit you and I have to deal with.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

I'm Canadian as well and we have fundies here too. They just aren't trying to take over our government like that fuck santorum.

[–]Thalaas 6 points7 points ago*

Oh yeah? The sh*t Sanorum says? You even breathe anything like he says as a politician up here? You can write off your election in a heart beat.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

I have no idea what you're trying to say.

[–]Thalaas 3 points4 points ago

Yeah guess that was kinda confusing. My bad

[–]AskingOnce[S] 4 points5 points ago

He's saying that if a Canadian politician tried to say anything like what Santorum says, they would be voted out of politics. Also, do you live in the western provinces? I don't mean to stereotype but I've heard that there are a lot more strong right opinions there.

[–]Alberta_Matt 7 points8 points ago

The Western provinces acctually have some of the highest % of population that declare themselves as non-religious. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Canada Media in the eastern part of Canada has a nasty history of talking out of their ass, in reguards to the west. And many eastern Canadians have a nasty history of believing it. (sorry for the rant)

[–]AskingOnce[S] 1 point2 points ago

Haha well thank you for clearing that up - I actually haven't heard much, as I stated it is a stereotype, not actually enforced by the media; on a post about the politics in Canada, I learned that there is a prevalent very conservative party in Alberta, and my mind inferred the stereotype.

Thanks for clearing that up!

[–]Swanny5 1 point2 points ago*

Southern Alberta is a real Bible Belt but nothing compared to the states. There are a lot of conservative groups in Alberta but a big part of that is because many groups persecuted elsewhere fled there, like the Mormons, Hutterites, Mennonites etc. Lots of the evangelical churches have a Mennonite background.

Still, compared to the States, Southern Alberta looks like Sodom and Gomorra!

[–]IAmGingerSnap 0 points1 point ago

Although the fact that I live in Calgary might have something to do with it, here the general public seems to be non-church going, if not non-believing. Then there's the rest of southern Alberta..

[–]joecan 0 points1 point ago

Yeah man, that east coast media reporting accurate election results. What a bunch of arseholes!

[–]shutUPandPLAY 5 points6 points ago

Really? I live in Saskatchewan and know very few people who actually openly identify as christian or go to church, and most of them are in the middle aged-elderly demographic. In fact I'm pretty sure I know more practicing Muslims and Sikhs then I do Christians, but that may just be due to the UofS campus being extremely multicultural. And no one I know really tries to force their beliefs on others.

[–]AskingOnce[S] 1 point2 points ago

Actually, my mothers family is from Saskatchewan, but all I've heard about that province specifically is that it rains a lot haha.

I actually think that a passing comment on reddit caused my overthinking head to gush out a stereotype related to it. I don't know much about the provinces personally.

[–]shutUPandPLAY 1 point2 points ago

Yeah the weather here is pretty crazy, -35C in the winter +35C in the summer, some years it rains/snows every other day, some years it rains/snows all of 3 times a season.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I see what he's saying now. Thanks for the clarification. No, southern Ontario actually but I know the stereotype you are referring to so no offense was taken.

[–]Blipblipbloop 1 point2 points ago

Westerner here! Any extremists on either side.

[–]boobers3 1 point2 points ago

Santorum had no chance of winning.

[–]joecan 0 points1 point ago

We don't have to deal with fundamentalists bothering us in our personal life, for the most part. But as long as we have Harper in power, no Canadian should be Gustering it up.

[–]evilcanuck 1 point2 points ago

Canadian fundies have control of our goverment dont know which rock these fellow Canadians are hiding behind

[–]AskingOnce[S] 5 points6 points ago

However, they simply control the economy. Canada got over a lot of these issues a long time ago; Exemplified well by a quote from the Right Honourable Trudeau, "There's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation." If any party tried to pull religion strongly into politics here, they would be voted down.

The fact that those in charge may be fundamentally religious is irrelevant as they do not bring their beliefs into their work, as far as I know.

[–]Alberta_Matt 2 points3 points ago

That sir (or madam) is a complete load of crap. Please lay out your argument so that I may throw said crap back in your face.

[–]leejs 2 points3 points ago

Harper may be a fundie, but when has he ever spoken of his religious beliefs in public. He's also not trying to stop gay marriage or end abortions. He keeps his beliefs private, the way it should be.

[–]Purple_Shade 0 points1 point ago

Harper is quite quiet about his religious veiws, I grant you that, however, it seems he has got an interest in ending both of those things. His party has attempted to pass several bills which would undermine human rights and begin the battle over those civil liberties again, and I very highly doubt (although I could be wrong, but I think the doubt is a valid emotion in this case) that he has had no hand to play in that.

As ever can be said of Harper, he could do, or be, worse. I am thankful that he isn't, though I long for him to be out of the power-seat.
