"But there's no atheists in foxholes! Of course, I've never been near a battlefield, but I go to church every few Sundays, and I pay a fair 14% tax, so I think I'm pretty qualified to tell you how American you are."

-Every Religious politician ever.

They forgot the last line:

"And civil wars lead to us southern baptist jesus freaks getting our ASSES kicked"

[–]fweng 3 points4 points ago

I'm British and that angers me.

[–]flamingkatie 1 point2 points ago

As a fellow Brit, I couldn't agree more. Also, etymologically speaking, it means we are only insane for certain periods (relating to the moon lol) - and my atheism is a constant thing!!

[–]DingDongSeven 0 points1 point ago

I'm a human being, and that angers me.

Strike that, I'm a carbon-based life form and that angers me. Fucking crucifix-junkies are out of their minds.

[–]LuigiP2 5 points6 points ago

I thought slavery lead to civil war :/

[–]shan6 4 points5 points ago

Isn't it nice that civil war is simple and caused by one factor?

[–]blingerama 0 points1 point ago

not really, that was just one excuse of the Civil War of your country, it was also about Federalism vs. Anti-Federalism. The government that was in place at the time was strongly biased towards Federalism, which got the Anti-Federalists stirred up, form the Confederate States, and was considered treason, the war just needed a moral reason like every other war in this world.

[–]LuigiP2 0 points1 point ago

That was eloquently put, but I am Canadian :)

[–]blingerama 0 points1 point ago

well.. I don't know much about Canada other than that it was settled by the French, and then we took it in the seven years war... and then after the American Revolution every one of our territores in North America was lost.... and that is everything I know about Canada.

[–]Alacritous 2 points3 points ago

I wonder if they'll ever try and make their point without resorting to trying to manipulate or shaming people to agree with their world view?

[–]Jeroknite 0 points1 point ago

No. It goes against their religion. :P

[–]Ninamgrey 0 points1 point ago

The fact their religion is based on shame notwithstanding....

[–]kthnxbai9 2 points3 points ago

for some reason i could only think of this quote when seeing this:

"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."- Yoda

[–]DarkStar5758 1 point2 points ago

They all ready got to the hate part.

[–]couchpotatoe 0 points1 point ago

me too!

[–]gammasan55 2 points3 points ago

If we apply some circular logic to this then Southerners who were for the civil war were traitors, and therefore anti-America, and therefore Anti-god. Which means that they are in fact Lunatic Atheists? And aren't the Southerners who fought in the Civil War like heroes to our current southerners? That means they worship Atheists. Which means we win!

super old repost. sorry.

Attack me all you want, but leave my lawyer out of it!

Relevant

Most photos I found are attributed to 2005. Rev E. F. Briggs died in 2006, so writing him a whole pile of letters won't achieve much.

The Christians who put up hyperbole like this to try and shame everyone else into acting like them usually seem to be the ones who have the hardest time understanding why anyone could possibly have a negative view of Christianity. What a bunch of ignorant twats.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I guess it was anti American of me when I raised my right hand and swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. When will theists stop resorting to childish fear mongering?

[–]I_am_anonymous 1 point2 points ago

We're always doing lunatic things like flying planes into skyscrapers. Oh wait, no. That was theists. Well, maybe it's because we kill people for having the wrong religious beliefs. Nope, theists again. Crusades? Theists. Inquisition? Theists. Dark ages? Theists. Holocaust? Theists.

Briggs is dead. He gets more attention than he deserves.

[–]Dulanski 1 point2 points ago

This is ignorant, and I am a Christian. I honestly am saddened by the way Christians are represented on Reddit, we are not all backwards rednecks who ignore science and disagree with every new breakthrough. I believe in a separation of church and state, the name of God has been falsely used to carry out unspeakable horrors on people through out the ages in all types of religions. false godly beliefs should no longer be used as justification for an action, especially on the government level. Don't be quick to hate me for my beliefs, stop spreading the hate, atheists and Christians should stand together with the same goals, to better the world, we don't have enough time on this planet to waste it dragging each others beliefs through the mud.

[–]elbruce 0 points1 point ago*

Tell you what, you gather together some "moderate" Christians, and make a serious effort to go seek out and engage extremist Christians. So that we don't have to.

That way, when we come to words with them, you don't have your backs to them while you cry about how we're painting all "people of faith" with a broad brush, but instead for perhaps the first time ever, have your backs to us demanding of the nutjobs to explain why your faith should be tarnished by their unmitigated assholery.

You're either against us atheists or against them extremists. Which is it? Pick one or sit down.

If you don't take this stand, then it's left to us atheists to engage the crazies. And you might not like our diagnosis (that all religion is false and stupid). If that isn't something you want to hear, then do something about your fucking extremists or go sit in the corner and shut the fuck up.

We'll be glad to take them out for you, but you might get caught in a wee bit of crossfire. That's just the cost of outsourcing this job to the atheists, just because you're too timid to do something about the "fellow Christians" who have taken it way too far.

Sorry if our lines of attack and criticism aren't "civil" or "genteel" enough for you. Sorry if we don't show magical respect for whatever silly bullshit dribbles out of your mouth. We are here to apply logic and take names. And frankly, we don't give the least fuck what your names are..

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

[–]SPAZZEH 0 points1 point ago

Slavery led to the civil war, and I'm pretty sure Christianity promoted slavery.

[–]Alisono 0 points1 point ago

It's the transitive property of bullshit.

[–]rozonkomo 0 points1 point ago

But I'm not remotely attached to the luna cycle for my all too rational thought.

[–]attackofsass19 0 points1 point ago

didn't early Americans like the fact that we had the freedom of a religion or the lack there of? being anti-god doesn't make us anti-American, that just means we are exercising our right to believe what we want because we are lucky enough to have that freedom.

[–]Eon89 0 points1 point ago

Fuck, my state.

Edit: A hour and 20 minutes from my home town.

[–]titties_be_milky 0 points1 point ago

It is sad that ignorance is common is america today. It doesn't mention god in the constitution as it shouldn't. It clearly states that one of our freedoms is freedom of religion.

[–]hollingm 0 points1 point ago

I'm not too worried about a preacher who works out of a PO Box.

[–]couchpotatoe 1 point2 points ago

a teeny tiny preacher!

[–]collectorcorinthian 0 points1 point ago

It appears the good Reverend has applied Jedi logic to biblical thinking. Strange.

[–]elbruce 0 points1 point ago*

Start it. See what happens, motherfuckers.

Seriously, let's do this dance. Apparently in the last 150 years you forgot what happens when you fucking step to this. Secede again. Watch what happens. Hey Dallas, go ask Fallujah what it's like to fight off the U.S. military-industrial complex with small-arms fire, see how that worked for them.

We'll burn Atlanta to the ground every 150 years like clockwork, if that's what it takes to get it into your redneck heads that you don't fucking step to this.

Do it. If we have to civil-war curbstomp your asses once every 150 years to keep you fucking hick bitches in line, then that's just what we'll do. Try it, motherfuckers, we dare you. SECEDE AGAIN.

Or shut the fuck up and do what you're told.
