This entry only qualifies as "partly true," though, because all the elements shown in the image weren't captured simultaneously in a single, unaltered snapshot. The picture is actually (according to NASA's "Astronomy Picture of the Day" site) a "three-photograph panorama digitally processed to reduce red reflections from the exploding firework."

The greatest 3 pictures stitched together and digitally mastered would probably be more appropriate IMO.

He just merged them so they fit together and adjusted the colours so the fireworks didn't overpower everything. It's not like he photoshopped in the thunderclouds and lightning.

Not the way I understood it. Altough, Snopes is unclear about this one, it still says it is a "three-photograph panorama". The camera is NOT taking 3 pictures at the same time. Have you ever seen a 3-lens camera? The photographer waited for the right time to take the pictures, so no, the three events did not happen simultaneously.

To be pedantic here, that particular fireworks explosion and that particular lightning strike could not have been photographed at the same time. A camera with the right lens, resolution, etc. probably could have taken a similar photo (with an explosion and a lightning strike), but not that exact photo.

I say this because the photos were (probably) taken with the same camera, and (definitely) at different times, and both lightning and fireworks are fairly short-duration events.

The three or four lighting bolts there probably happened over a period of 30 seconds or more, with a very slow shutter speed. So yes, they are fairly short duration events individually, but not collectively, as shown here. The fireworks were clearly taken with a faster shutter speed. The comet is amazing. I've never seen one that size.

I see a greater evidence of ghosting in the middle and right picture(s) so I would indeed agree. I'd still class this as a single photo. After all, you don't call something it's individual parts, but it's collective.

Not at all. It was a thought that ended with an inquisitive pause because perhaps the image was created using video. But I can make no claims one way or the other.

Well that specific firework / location of the comet in the sky / lightning bolt couldn't have happened at once if he took them in 3 separate shots. It is possible that there was both a lightning bolt and firework going off at the same time as the comet but that timing would be very tricky considering lightning bolts themselves are unpredictable at best.

Yeah... does this mean that the HDR pictures I take on my iPhone aren't really photographs because, in my limited knowledge of these kinds of things, aren't HDR photographs just 3 or 4 exposures combined?

They are still photographs. However HDR pictures are several exposures combined. This is usually to create a biggest depth of color in the picture.

Exactly. You can tell it's a stitched panorama just by looking at it, and the other edits are pretty much standard practice for digital photographers these days. The fireworks and lightning might not have gone off like that at exactly the same time, but all 3 elements were there within a short timespan - makes it legit as far as I'm concerned.

It's not uncommon to get summer storms with lightning on Australia day in Perth. There was a crazy lightning storm right over the city this year, during the biggest fireworks show of the year. It was intense (despite the lack of a comet) and made for some great photos. 1 2

People all over the world sit on beaches to watch for comet passes. Only in Australia do they hold a fireworks display to honour the occasion.
