I've actually done something almost like this. I squished probably 7 or 8 yellow jacket wasps in a cluster with my bare hand because they needed to die quickly and in a group before they could scatter and sting me individually.

This is a group of male wasps, which can not sting you. Male wasps are completely harmless because they do not have stingers. Only females have a stinger, or ovipositor, the main function of which is to lay eggs, not just to be used as a defense mechanism.
