Why is a picture of a spider so reaction-invoking? I find the creatures fascinating to look at. It seems like Reddit would rather watch a video of someone dying in a car-crash than see a picture of a spider.

Its called arachnophobia as you probably know, and if I'm not entirely wrong, a phobia is defined as an irrational fear of paranoia over something, the person stricken with the phobia often knows that spiders are harmless, but is afraid anyway, and that can be attributed to several reasons, like visual stimuli, considering that spiders do indeed look like what one would call "horrific".

Fun fact, you're never more than five metres away from a spider! Sweet dreams!

It's a primal instinct. Is there something you're afraid of? Heights maybe? What we feel is just as intense as that. For me it's a fear of things with long thin legs, including spiders, crabs, some other bugs and even shrimp. When I see any of those things I feel the fight or flight urge, either squash it or run. Often I do nothing because fighting it will cause it to move. The biggest fear is the thing being on your body, on your skin, and not being able to get it off. Ugh.
