Where I live, Christians support gay marriage... (imgur.com)
submitted 7 months ago by Kanex
[–]HosakaKiyomine 53 points54 points55 points 7 months ago
I urge all gays to come to Canada. It's just like the USA but colder and less crowded. I don't know why some Americans think gay marriage will ruin the sanctity of marriage. Nothing bad has happened here. So those fundies can go fuck themselves.
[–]The_Painted_Man 17 points18 points19 points 7 months ago
So those fundies can go fuck themselves.
I think that will be my new family motto.
[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 7 months ago
I'm not gay. Can I still come to Canada?
[–]AskingOnce 19 points20 points21 points 7 months ago
only if you know how to spell colour, eh?
[–]wesontap 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago
Please Use eh properly. Thx
[–]Smrti 13 points14 points15 points 7 months ago
I know, eh, fuckin 'mericans mis-using eh, eh?!
[–]Falsum2 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
Take off! Ya hoser!
[–]oohdatguy 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago
All you guys are trying to perpetuate Canadian stereotypes. As a Canadian, i have no idea what you're talking aboot.
[–]Falsum2 -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago
If you haven't seen The Great White North, then you aren't a real Canadian.
[–]oohdatguy 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
I was born in Yellowknife. That north enough?
[–]Falsum2 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
That's not exactly the 'great white north' I was referring to. But I'd be surprised if you weren't familiar with it.

[–]lenigod 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
That's not true. There are only 2 things that you need to have done to be a real Canadian. Be born in Canada, and played hockey.
[–]Time_Terminal 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I've done neither and yet I'm Canadian. Shall I go die in a venomous pit now?
[–]rpridz -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago*
Wll we just cell phones in last week so I'd say things are pretty great...
.... I beg your pardon?
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
Now I know that Canada uses correct spelling, I like Canada even more! It's like between England and America and nicer (and uses a logical system of units), mate (that's a British mate, btw, as opposed to Australian (which is like Canada, but Hotter)). I'll move there as soon as our economy crashes (pretty soon apparently) or if Cameron is re-elected
[–]SoftwareAlchemist 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago
Hell yes. You just have to be ok with extra friendliness, a general air of trust, and an education system not from the 70's. Our government has some problems but considering your government it will be a step up.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Only if you're not a racist, man. It's colorful.
[–]Xveers 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
The better part is the actual bill of law that was passed. It's a grand total of six pages or so, of which one page is the cover, the second is the table of contents, the third is the actual bill, and the rest are the amendments that are made to certain other bills of law to get everything on the same page. It is, for once, a very clear and succinct law. Of which is part 3.1, which essentially kneecaps one of the fundies major objections IE churches will have to perform ceremonies against their religion.

And the WBC isn't allowed in Canada either, eh?
Friggin' rights boys
[–]ShinyKneecaps 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
Telling you to shut up would sound homophobic, but.. please shut up. I don't want the American : Canadian ratio to go up any higher please. Any higher than it is now and our average IQ is going to start to drop and Harper will get even comfier, because what's easier than turning Canada into America when a bunch of Americans are moving into Canada!
[–][deleted] 7 months ago

[–]ShinyKneecaps 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago*
It's not about under-educated it's just the fact they grew up in America. I want immigrants from other countries to come here, they are all hard working and devoted. Heck my landlord came here 5 years ago and already owns 3 buildings, hes making money putting his son through university and probably attempting to bring the rest of his family from China. Any other immigrant is welcome, Americans have a nasty sense of entitlement and arrogance, I honestly want none of them.
"Best nation in the world" Yeah they used the quick route like everyone else, slaves, except they don't acknowledge it. The only industry left in America that's viable, is the one where prisoners are put to work because they arent paid anything. Sure takes me back to the good old days. Pathetic fucking theocratic, mockery of democracy.
Eminem said it best, "This democracy of hypocrisy....your divided states of embarrassment."
[–]ShinyKneecaps 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
I was always told a comparison between America and Canada in terms of culture. America is a melting pot and Canada is a mosaic.
[–]monkeedude1212 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Which one is more colourful?
[–]nonombre 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
I heard Canada was like a tossed salad, everything's mixed, but still distinct
[–]mostlikelyatwork 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
You do realize that you'd only be getting Americans who by the very action of immigrating, do not hold their former country to be the best most amazing country that God put on the planet, right?
Not to mention, the American : Canadian ratio wouldn't be higher, you would simply have more Canadians. Canadians, who by the way, would likely not be into Harper.
Your broad stroke generalization of Americans as unintelligent, entitled and arrogant leads me to believe that you are not polite enough to actually be Canadian. /s
[–]ShinyKneecaps 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Probably because I live in Quebec. bwahahaha.
[–]Syn7axError 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Only liberal Americans are going to move here though.
[–]Kanex[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I facepalm myself everytime someone says anything good about Harper, and laugh when they hate on him
Cant tell what you're doing, so there is a red handprint on my face and my chest hurts. It felt wrong...
[–]orniver 10 points11 points12 points 7 months ago
It's just like the USA but colder
I beg to differ. Canada is a much warmer place. No, I'm not talking about the weather.
Two weeks ago it was +21 here in Ottawa. Then again, Ottawa's got the weirdest weather around.
[–]Exallium 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
3 weeks ago, it was +20 here. 2 days ago it was -4. Now it's +11. Oh Halifax.
Same here! Silly Canada needs to decide between winter and summer.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago*
Similar here in England, but we have crazy archbishops who(m?) no-one listens to, and it's more crowded
[–]sdcrow 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
I wish I could move to Canada so badly. Spending time up there made me hate Arkansas so much more.
[–]1zero2two8eight 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago

[–]msmomilla -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago
Don't ya know? Going for Sarah plain or a character from Fargo? Because I aint never heard no person say anythang quite like that up north.
[–]1zero2two8eight 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Neither have I. I hear so many jokes about Americans, Australians, Blacks, Christians and all the like, but've never seen one about Canadians, personally. Thought I'd contribute. By the way, you spelled 'Palin' wrong, but I forgive you because 'Sarah Plain' is funnier. Plus, fuck that woman.

[–]bejayel 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago
Just wait for the real election madness to start. The home page will be flooded with some hilarious shit that can only make a person of reasonable intelligence shake their head.. Till they realize that USA is too big to simply shake you head and laugh at :(
[–]Fredlite 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
I Feel sorry for them
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
As a Briton, I like to browse it and feel superior that England is 2 steps ahead of the USA, then I remember Canada is 3 steps ahead (I wonder what it's like in Australia? it seems like Canada but hotter (Canada being a better version of England that fully uses a logical system of units))
[–]Syn7axError 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Meh, Australia is almost identical to Canada politically, but harsher (More games and movies banned and all that).
[–]rayniidayes 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Same.
[–]bradlo19 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
Yep, I can confirm this. The Protestant Church I was brought up in has an openly gay minister and a LGBT youth group
[–]caulay 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
That is my Church! Glad we got our shit together.
And by my church I mean the church my parents required I attend until high school (even though they didn't go themselves). I believe this was more or less for my grandparents sake than theirs as they've never done anything religious ever. I also got confirmed into this church because my grandmother said I should..Ironically it was the last time I had ever gone to church, which she still brings up from time to time.
[–]S_Dub7 12 points13 points14 points 7 months ago

[–]mechanate 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago
We have our bible belts here in Canada. ie rural alberta.
[–]faelun 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Yeah but how many people live in rural Alberta?
[–]mechanate 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
As of 2006, over a half-million and growing, or close to 20%. Enough to sway a vote.
Maybe, but the Canadian bible belt has no power outside of it. The American has power on a national level.
[–]cogsci_guy 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Yeah, except for the Federal government in power.
If the conservatives won because of the Albertan vote, there are a ton more Albertans than I thought.
[–]cogsci_guy 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Of course they weren't the only ones, but still, it's their strong base.
Above all, I was talking about the rest of this thread. The way Christians support gay marriage on a national level, the fact that the church of Canada allows gay ministers and all that, the non-bible belt Canada influences national politics a lot more than the bible belt does. That being said, you are right in that it is a bible belt, it's just not nearly as strong as it is in the states.
Point taken.
True. However, most American Christian organizations (ie FOTF) bring in a fair amount of Canadian support.
Alright, I guess it would be more appropriate to say that Canada doesn't listen to the Canadian bible belt, not necessarily that the bible belt has a small sphere of influence.

US extreme rights parties Abortion should be banned! Atheism is a sin! Religion matters! Canadian extreme right party So, we're changing the taxes to benefit our businesses, eh? Oh, and it cost us 1.5 cents to make the penny... screw that!
US extreme rights parties Abortion should be banned! Atheism is a sin! Religion matters!
Canadian extreme right party So, we're changing the taxes to benefit our businesses, eh? Oh, and it cost us 1.5 cents to make the penny... screw that!
I hate how when I look at a political discussion about presidential candidates in the US, it's all about their stances on Abortion, on their religion, etc. etc.... I have not actually heard a single thing about Rick Santorum's economic action plan or what he plans to do in office.
[–]GoldenWarrior 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Wrong actually. Conservatives aren't far right. They've learned from the Liberals that only a center party can gain majority influence in Canada. Thats why they're sitting center-right with liberals center-left.
[–]AskingOnce 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I know :/ that was the point... they are the most extreme right party we have running on a national, or to my knowledge provincial, platform in Canada, Whereas the states is a much more right leaning country.
Ah I see. Yeah I think Wildrose in Alberta is probably the furthest right, but I don't know their full platform being from Ontario and all
[–]Lindsey1989 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Yep. The guy who married my parents does a lot of gay weddings. His name is 'Reverend Johnny', and he's also the front man of a local band. He performs the weddings, and then plays the receptions. True story.
[–]Slintbob 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
All those horrible things American politicians say will happen to your society after gay marrige is legalized.................still hasn't happened.
[–]TrustiestMuffin 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Senators and Leafs eh?
That was fucking disgusting, how dare they televise such an unholy union, a SENS fan and a LEAFS fan???? What next??? A Canuck and Habs fan!?
Them leafs are pretty good golfers, eh?

[–]dilligasatall 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago
Canada has crazy irrational people too... just not as many.
[–]paulthepenguin 6 points7 points8 points 7 months ago
And we've done a decent job of shutting them up so far. Though certain political parties are trying to help them raise their voices. Still, I'm constantly amazed at the bull that flies around down south.
[–]dilligasatall 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
Me too.. I'm starting to to think that the U.S. should have a minimum IQ limit in order to be allowed to vote.
[–]Marvelous_Gentleman 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
I think everyone should just have to pass a certain economic test or something of the like. Do not know how they would manage to put this into place though.
[–]jstalin_x 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
That is not the point. The point is that the scales are tipped in favor of a more compassionate and secular society than in most parts of the US. I know the people who did not support the gay marriage bill, they were more opposed to the wording than the actual act/ceremony/institution. They were all for giving gay couples the same rights but just did not want to use the word marriage to describe it.
EDIT: I should say the people I know who did not support gay marriage were all for equal rights but wanted a different label.
[–]Glatisaint 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
"Oh, I believe you deserve equal rights and all, but the use of a word, that's much more than you deserve. We need to label you differently to differentiate your equality from our equality."
[–]jstalin_x 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Yeah pretty much their argument right there.
[–]rasputine 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago
"Christians support gay marriage" does not necessarily mean "All Christians" or "All MPs voted as their religious belief dictates" or "All MPs voted how they felt was right, regardless of their party's official stance"
[–]LucifersCounsel 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
The point is, clearly it wasn't a clear victory, so there must have been quite a bit of opposition.
For real, every Christian I've ever met does. And our population is like 50% Christian, although almost 30% Atheist now
[–]blacktoe 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Yeah, I remember one of my trips to church when that Act was being passed. The priest asked everyone to stay to sign a petition against it.
Everyone did.
I had never been so angry and disappointed.
The truth is, the US is only apparently worse because their bigots aren't so shy.
[–]error1954 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Wisconsinites.

Hey!!! I resemble that remark!
[–]CitrusChimchar 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
I wish i could say the same im from Kansas, its very hic yet most of my friends and i are irreligious. But we live in the city. I support gay rights and hope to see gay marriage a national law. But this will probably be a state by state thing because people in Dumbfuckistan (the Midwest) would shit there pants and secede. I hope that foreigners don't think all of us Yankees are stupid Christians because there are TONS or smart, atheist people in the United States.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
I am an atheist who was raised in a Lutheran church. We have a female pastor and gay congregation members that are loved and accepted. I'm just saying.... it's not ALL (american) Christians. But yeah, Canada is marvelous.

We get concerts every once in a while here in Halifax... but they are pretty few and far between.
[–]ryanthekiwi 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
The combination of higher taxes and more expensive goods are my main complaints. A close third is the weather.
Higher taxes are a bitch, until you realize "Oh shit, I need a doctor"
[–]SimpleGeologist -2 points-1 points0 points 7 months ago
I don't know how it applies to you, but it bothers me from time to time. More restrictive firearms laws than those of the states.
Canada is "better" when it comes to this shit, really. There are still "bible belts" in Canada, though. Mostly south-west Canada, its not nearly as religious here in the Maritimes.
Or in the East in general.
[–]Azmodan_Kijur 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
I love this country. Come to Canada. We endorse gay marriage, bacon by the kilo, and overwhelming politeness. And we are very sorry about all that.

Legit question, I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything. Suppose this probably isn't the place to ask it though...
Edit: Ouch, geez, asking questions is frowned upon around here I guess.
[–]emkat 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago
Just because you personally believe homosexuality is immoral does not mean that you believe that your beliefs should influence secular law. Nor does it mean that they don't treat people with respect, considering how Christians think a lot of things are sins.

People bitch no matter what America does. We can literally kill Nazis and people bitch.
Unless you're from Russia, you have nothing to complain about from WW2... Russia was actually being productive and making sacrifices to do it.
No, doing a really good job of being bombed doesn't count, Britain.
[–]AhhTimmah 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Thats exactly what MUHRICA is known for, ignorance. You and Russia weren't the only ones in the war, in fact you were the last one to join the one that mattered. My point was, you ignore the ones that shouldn't be, and start pointless ones over imaginary weapons or leaders you put into power when you interfere where you shouldn't. Perhaps the American government could benefit from a reallocation of funds from the military to the education system so a little history could be taught. Maybe even a little geography too because I'd bet that most couldn't point out Iraq of Afghanistan on a map, instead they believe the entire middle east is the enemy. Also, when has anyone ever, and mean EVER, bitched about killing Nazis?
[–]HighschoolFreshmen 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago

that's all it is.
[–]bejayel 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
The bible doesn't take itself seriously and contradicts itself all over the place. How can you expect the followers to read that thing and take it all seriously?
I know that it says that in the bible good point bringing it up. But they are still people none the less. Plus I don't mind them. What have they done to me? Nothing!
