I urge all gays to come to Canada. It's just like the USA but colder and less crowded. I don't know why some Americans think gay marriage will ruin the sanctity of marriage. Nothing bad has happened here. So those fundies can go fuck themselves.

So those fundies can go fuck themselves.

I think that will be my new family motto.

If you haven't seen The Great White North, then you aren't a real Canadian.

That's not exactly the 'great white north' I was referring to. But I'd be surprised if you weren't familiar with it.

That's not true. There are only 2 things that you need to have done to be a real Canadian. Be born in Canada, and played hockey.

I've done neither and yet I'm Canadian. Shall I go die in a venomous pit now?

Now I know that Canada uses correct spelling, I like Canada even more! It's like between England and America and nicer (and uses a logical system of units), mate (that's a British mate, btw, as opposed to Australian (which is like Canada, but Hotter)). I'll move there as soon as our economy crashes (pretty soon apparently) or if Cameron is re-elected

[–]SoftwareAlchemist 8 points9 points ago

Hell yes. You just have to be ok with extra friendliness, a general air of trust, and an education system not from the 70's. Our government has some problems but considering your government it will be a step up.

The better part is the actual bill of law that was passed. It's a grand total of six pages or so, of which one page is the cover, the second is the table of contents, the third is the actual bill, and the rest are the amendments that are made to certain other bills of law to get everything on the same page. It is, for once, a very clear and succinct law. Of which is part 3.1, which essentially kneecaps one of the fundies major objections IE churches will have to perform ceremonies against their religion.

Telling you to shut up would sound homophobic, but.. please shut up. I don't want the American : Canadian ratio to go up any higher please. Any higher than it is now and our average IQ is going to start to drop and Harper will get even comfier, because what's easier than turning Canada into America when a bunch of Americans are moving into Canada!

It's not about under-educated it's just the fact they grew up in America. I want immigrants from other countries to come here, they are all hard working and devoted. Heck my landlord came here 5 years ago and already owns 3 buildings, hes making money putting his son through university and probably attempting to bring the rest of his family from China. Any other immigrant is welcome, Americans have a nasty sense of entitlement and arrogance, I honestly want none of them.

"Best nation in the world" Yeah they used the quick route like everyone else, slaves, except they don't acknowledge it. The only industry left in America that's viable, is the one where prisoners are put to work because they arent paid anything. Sure takes me back to the good old days. Pathetic fucking theocratic, mockery of democracy.

Eminem said it best, "This democracy of hypocrisy....your divided states of embarrassment."

You do realize that you'd only be getting Americans who by the very action of immigrating, do not hold their former country to be the best most amazing country that God put on the planet, right?

Not to mention, the American : Canadian ratio wouldn't be higher, you would simply have more Canadians. Canadians, who by the way, would likely not be into Harper.

Your broad stroke generalization of Americans as unintelligent, entitled and arrogant leads me to believe that you are not polite enough to actually be Canadian. /s

That is my Church! Glad we got our shit together.

And by my church I mean the church my parents required I attend until high school (even though they didn't go themselves). I believe this was more or less for my grandparents sake than theirs as they've never done anything religious ever. I also got confirmed into this church because my grandmother said I should..Ironically it was the last time I had ever gone to church, which she still brings up from time to time.

[–]mechanate 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Syn7axError 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe, but the Canadian bible belt has no power outside of it. The American has power on a national level.

[–]cogsci_guy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, except for the Federal government in power.

[–]Syn7axError 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If the conservatives won because of the Albertan vote, there are a ton more Albertans than I thought.

[–]cogsci_guy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of course they weren't the only ones, but still, it's their strong base.

[–]Syn7axError 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Above all, I was talking about the rest of this thread. The way Christians support gay marriage on a national level, the fact that the church of Canada allows gay ministers and all that, the non-bible belt Canada influences national politics a lot more than the bible belt does. That being said, you are right in that it is a bible belt, it's just not nearly as strong as it is in the states.

[–]cogsci_guy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Point taken.

[–]mechanate 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True. However, most American Christian organizations (ie FOTF) bring in a fair amount of Canadian support.

[–]Syn7axError 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Alright, I guess it would be more appropriate to say that Canada doesn't listen to the Canadian bible belt, not necessarily that the bible belt has a small sphere of influence.

US extreme rights parties Abortion should be banned! Atheism is a sin! Religion matters!

Canadian extreme right party So, we're changing the taxes to benefit our businesses, eh? Oh, and it cost us 1.5 cents to make the penny... screw that!

I hate how when I look at a political discussion about presidential candidates in the US, it's all about their stances on Abortion, on their religion, etc. etc.... I have not actually heard a single thing about Rick Santorum's economic action plan or what he plans to do in office.

[–]GoldenWarrior 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wrong actually. Conservatives aren't far right. They've learned from the Liberals that only a center party can gain majority influence in Canada. Thats why they're sitting center-right with liberals center-left.

[–]AskingOnce 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know :/ that was the point... they are the most extreme right party we have running on a national, or to my knowledge provincial, platform in Canada, Whereas the states is a much more right leaning country.

[–]GoldenWarrior 0 points1 point ago

[–]jstalin_x 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is not the point. The point is that the scales are tipped in favor of a more compassionate and secular society than in most parts of the US. I know the people who did not support the gay marriage bill, they were more opposed to the wording than the actual act/ceremony/institution. They were all for giving gay couples the same rights but just did not want to use the word marriage to describe it.

EDIT: I should say the people I know who did not support gay marriage were all for equal rights but wanted a different label.

[–]Glatisaint 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Oh, I believe you deserve equal rights and all, but the use of a word, that's much more than you deserve. We need to label you differently to differentiate your equality from our equality."

But...I thought the bible said homosexuality is bad? How can you support gays while that's in there?

Legit question, I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything. Suppose this probably isn't the place to ask it though...

Edit: Ouch, geez, asking questions is frowned upon around here I guess.

Just because you personally believe homosexuality is immoral does not mean that you believe that your beliefs should influence secular law. Nor does it mean that they don't treat people with respect, considering how Christians think a lot of things are sins.

They take the Golden Rule and the Two Commandments summarized in Luke, and disregard everything else as relevant to the culture at the time.

lots of other shit in the bible is bad, you don't see christians following all of it. this is just one more thing to add to the list of what they do not follow

that's all it is.

The bible doesn't take itself seriously and contradicts itself all over the place. How can you expect the followers to read that thing and take it all seriously?

I know that it says that in the bible good point bringing it up. But they are still people none the less. Plus I don't mind them. What have they done to me? Nothing!

Dude... I think that part is obsolete. It also says that we cant eat pig or work on Saturday, but we don't consider that a sin Do we now? Sorry for being a Christian in the atheist section, but there is no rule keeping me out. You babas.

Canada is a theocracy. Their Constitutional Charter recognizes the "Supremcacy Of God" before the rule of law. Don't believe me? Look it up.

I'm American AND Canadian (dual citizenship), and I have been MANY places in both countries that don't support gay marriage, it's just more pronounced in the US. So, please.... Don't brag about something so subjective.
