Thank you. For a second I thought physics wasn't real.

[–]centralcontrol 65 points66 points ago

generally, physics is a real thing except that it gets really confusing at that scale..

[–]Thud_Gunderson 37 points38 points ago

"An airplane flies because the upper part of its wing is a fixed, curved structure. That way, air flowing over the top of the wing has to travel faster, and a greater distance, in the same amount of time as air flowing under the wing. This causes the upper wing's air pressure to drop, so that the higher pressure beneath the wing forces the wing upwards -- and the plane with it. That's the basic principle behind airplane flight."

Wait isn't this wrong or something? I could have sworn I read that this is not actually the case.

[–]iammolotov 34 points35 points ago

Yeah I don't have a source off hand but I'm pretty sure that's hailed as being the biggest common-misconception in physics.

[–]centralcontrol 46 points47 points ago

[–]zanhoshi 25 points26 points ago

Oh my god, the things I believed when I was a child, and had to unlearn in high school, were true. I threw away intuition and believed the myth condescendingly told to me by my teachers.

Ugh.

[–]POOPYFACEface 7 points8 points ago

Dude that little sim is the sickest thing I've seen online in a long time. Thanks!

[–]Rethread -3 points-2 points ago

I troll deep water for nuggets like this. I hope it's as good as I think it is... It's strange because I run Java at work not at home, and I'll just wait to go to work to see/use it.

I've just stolen all these links for a decent school. Call me a Pirate all day long, but, I'm one of the best teachers around. Teaching the teachers, someone has to do it.

[–]Accolade83 1 point2 points ago

That NASA sim page was like a blast back to 1995...

...but it was awesome!

[–]pageboysam 0 points1 point ago

Although the author has a point, there is at least one misconception here:

Rotor blades are usually not airfoil-shaped or tear-shaped because drag is less of a concern.

All the commercial helicopters I've ever seen have airfoil-shaped rotor blades AND it's extremely important to pair the rotors' airfoil shapes so that they match.

[–]nuclearblaster 0 points1 point ago

thank you, you've just corrected a very important error in my knowledge!

[–]Severok 2 points3 points ago

Relevent XKCD

[–]CrazyPurpleBacon 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the real reason has to do with the air flow that flows down over the curved wing. The opposite reaction of the air moving downwards is for it to push back upwards on the wing(IIRC) and produce lift.

[–]jettrscga 13 points14 points ago*

Yes because that implies that the particles travelling above the wing have some inherent desire to catch the ones under the wing which isn't true.

At the risk of explaining wrong, here's a better source.

tl;dr The important part isn't the low pressure above the wing since that's inadequate force; the important part is pushing air down with angle of attack.

[–]DNAsly -3 points-2 points ago

This is the criticism I always give to people who believe in this mumbo jumbo. One has yet to answer "they want to meet up because they're a fluid displaced by the wing, and once the wing passes what was ripped apart should generally be put back where it used to be."

I mean, that's correct, but you're never going to get particle A that was on top of particle B to be back on top of particle B after the wing passes. Odds are they'll be close, but not in the same spot.

[–]alcapwned 1 point2 points ago

It's wrong. According to that explanation upside-down flight and flight with symmetric airfoils are both impossible, which just isn't true.

av8n.com is the best resource on the physics of flight I've ever read. Chapter 3 is specifically on airfoils and lift, but the whole thing is really interesting.

The simplest way to summarize lift is "the airfoil imparts a net downward momentum to the air, which in turn imparts the opposite net upward momentum to the wing (ie lift)". That explains the end result but doesn't explain how it happens. av8n.com summarizes lift like so:

The wing produces circulation in proportion to its angle of attack (and its airspeed). This circulation means the air above the wing is moving faster. This in turn produces low pressure in accordance with Bernoulli’s principle. The low pressure pulls up on the wing and pulls down on the air in accordance with all of Newton’s laws.

[–]centralcontrol 0 points1 point ago

that makes it sound like bernoulli's principle is the effect of the wing, not the cause of lift. that is the point, no?

[–]alcapwned 0 points1 point ago

Sorry I'm not exactly sure what your question is, but like it says on the site:

  • The wing produces lift “because” it is flying at an angle of attack.
  • The wing produces lift “because” of circulation.
  • The wing produces lift “because” of Bernoulli’s principle.
  • The wing produces lift “because” of Newton’s law of action and reaction.

All four of those are effects of the wing and all they all work together to produce lift.

[–]centralcontrol 0 points1 point ago

sorry. i had actually just heard the myth myself, so i was trying to learn the concept at the same time as chatting.

[–]anstromm 0 points1 point ago

It's a factor, but I believe the wings' angle of attack is a bigger factor, which is why airplanes can still fly upside down.

[–]Tittiesrgood 0 points1 point ago

I always thought they just used magic...

[–]iDontShift 4 points5 points ago

Scientists still have only scratched the surface of the puzzle of insect flight. An insect must continually flap its wings to stay aloft, and must continually alter its wing and body orientations to counteract the numerous forces that are dragging it downward. This requires more than wing agility; it also requires a sharp little brain.

"What would you need to know if you really wanted to build a fly?" Dickinson asks. "Understanding what the wings do is just a tiny part of it." If you built a robotic fly and its wing simply flapped back and forth, "the thing very rapidly crashes like a brick."

To fly, "every moment (the insect) has to be constantly figuring out: 'Am I yawing? Am I pitching? Am I rolling? Am I drifting backward? Am I falling? Am I rising? And all that information is constantly streaming into a brain the size of about a poppy seed. Understanding insect flight requires understanding how that little 'computer' works -- and that's just as essential as understanding how the wings work.

"There's still a lot of stuff to be excited about -- we're not going to solve it all in my lifetime."

[–]kstarks17 4 points5 points ago

gotta love Richard Hammond

[–]centralcontrol 1 point2 points ago

in doing the research for this thread, i just became a follower.

[–]djrbx 2 points3 points ago

Made me waste burn through 1 hour of work time just watching the full episode. Loved it, everyone should watch it.

Thanks

For the lazy: LINK

[–]gorochan 0 points1 point ago

Thanks a lot! I have not watched the entire episode, but now I will :B

[–]vxx 1 point2 points ago

I am interested in how much pressure they have to build up to get that fast?

[–]centralcontrol 4 points5 points ago

[–]crazejason -2 points-1 points ago

i was gonna say DAS AUTO with the commercial like i always do but it was DAS SFAVGSKHXAHCKG AUTOMOBILE :(

[–]Scrial 3 points4 points ago

But flying is really easy, you just need to jump and miss the floor.

[–]GalacticNexus 2 points3 points ago

That's orbiting, silly.

[–]irongyent 2 points3 points ago

It's falling, with style.

[–]occupythekitchen 0 points1 point ago

yeah I was going the whole time how the fuck is that possible. So I just realized I can be gullible but reddit will always straighten it out.

[–]NathanDahlin 3 points4 points ago

Translation of commercial's slogan: "Maximum force. Minimum [fuel] consumption."

English version for anyone who wants it.

TL;DW: English ad says "The New Golf GT with TSI - Unusually Powerful" & frog eventually drops back into the water.

[–]mike92k 3 points4 points ago

how does vw know that when i see a bug pick up a frog i ACTUALLY wanna car?

[–]Pravusmentis 0 points1 point ago

In theory it could be posted to /r/hailcorporate

[–]Hellothereawesome 0 points1 point ago

how come our commercials aren't this cool? they're lame all the time :/

[–]netino 0 points1 point ago

They're saved for sports finals.

[–]IZ3820 0 points1 point ago

No, it's from episode 11 of Firefly.

Seriously though, it's a car commercial.

[–]kevinaminator 0 points1 point ago

They used this ad to advertise the golf and not the beetle?

[–]snarkinturtle 25 points26 points ago

Totally shocked to see that some people were fooled, even momentarily by this. :/

Anyway, there is a real (gruesome) example of a beetle that turns the tables on attacking frogs for a living.

[–]Sithic 8 points9 points ago

I actually felt my dick shrink as I watched these videos, upvote to you sir.

[–]thesheepishlord 2 points3 points ago

Holy shit. The best defense is a good offense after all.

[–]ForMas 3 points4 points ago

I'VE MADE A HUGE MISTAKE

Calling fake? Shit, I'm falling cake!

[–]Saganomics 4 points5 points ago

You don't say?

[–]chaitan94 2 points3 points ago

[–]KaiserDragon 2 points3 points ago

you made me laugh, thank you.

[–]Batman_verified_user[S] 1 point2 points ago

LOL, sorry! I knew the gif was fake, but didn't know the original source.

[–]poompt 0 points1 point ago

It's a simple question of weight ratios. A one-ounce insect could not carry a 1-pound frog!

[–]GeneralWarts 70 points71 points ago

This is what I feel like in the very rare occasion that one of my posts actually makes it to front page.

[–]Resilient_Maniac 36 points37 points ago

Thank you so much for just commenting and not making entirely new post. We all appreciate it.

[–]KhaoticLegacy 10 points11 points ago

I bet you'll see it with this very sentence as the title.

[–]CRRZ 2 points3 points ago

Great idea! I'm gonna go post it right now!

[–]fightswithbears 1 point2 points ago

Nah, first you have to wait until everyone forgets about this post. Which will be in about a day or so.

[–]CRRZ 4 points5 points ago

Okay...

[–]BranchDavidian 2 points3 points ago

And this is why he's never made it to the front page, sadly.

[–]Translates_To_Latin 5 points6 points ago

Hoc est quod sentio cum nuntius meus paginam primam attendat.

[–]Albert_Spangler 20 points21 points ago

Of course it's fake! Realness isn't the point.

[–]ColonicIrritation 5 points6 points ago

The fact that people could even question its authenticity almost made me put my palm through my head.

[–]Batman_verified_user[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thank you!

[–]raakphan 3 points4 points ago

It's Zipper from the Rescue Rangers!

[–]doctorbull 0 points1 point ago

zipper was such a badass

[–]khatche5 2 points3 points ago

This would make a good game where the bug is the main character and the frog is the final boss

[–]elcucuuuy 15 points16 points ago

I guess that frog just couldn't harm a fly

[–]trolling_4_success 13 points14 points ago

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

[–]Phoen 5 points6 points ago

Well, it's a commercial '-'

Here

[–]onowahoo 3 points4 points ago

Something doesn't seem right about this gif

[–]Renmauzuo 18 points19 points ago

I think it's because of the stuff that happens between the beginning and the end.

[–]andbruno 2 points3 points ago

Reality.

[–]jimitonic 0 points1 point ago

It's the pixels.

[–]matari 1 point2 points ago

and when the fly finally let go of that sorry frog and he fell in a shameful splash into that cold pond —that was made especially more so because of his embarrassment— oh how did his frog friends mock him.

[–]Ebbany 1 point2 points ago

i wonder if the fly lived?

[–]jt004c 0 points1 point ago

Upvoted for sweet, gentle, naivety

[–]ChampCrawdaddy 1 point2 points ago

I'M NOT LOCKED IN HERE WITH YOU YOU'RE LOCKED IN HERE WITH ME

[–]FindsTheBrightSide 8 points9 points ago

I'm absolutely positive that a flying insect couldn't produce the lift necessary to pick up a frog too. Fake.

[–]VanillaWafers 15 points16 points ago

Well, maybe if two flies had the frog on a strand of tree bark or something.

[–]matari 17 points18 points ago

first, you'd have to determine the air speed velocity of an unladen fly.

[–]silenc3x 10 points11 points ago

African or European?

[–]IYKWIM_AITYD 5 points6 points ago

I don't know.

[–]upvotegreatthings 1 point2 points ago

Mexican! Visit Mexico and see infant sized insects.

[–]lawltech 7 points8 points ago

I feel bad when people don't understand great references

[–]likeadog 14 points15 points ago

That bug was trapped in a meth lab for weeks on end. Perfectly logical gif

[–]pubup -1 points0 points ago

I'm pretty sure you don't know what PCP is.

[–]Learned__Hand 3 points4 points ago

A one gram fly CANNOT carry a 5 gram frog. Its a matter of simple weight ratios.

Well... what if it was an African fly? Or what if two put a line between them?

[–]AirshipAtamis 0 points1 point ago

I would like you to look up any ant species to see your weight ratio theory shattered.

[–]Learned__Hand 1 point2 points ago

I would like you to look up monty python's holy grail to see your subculture rating shattered.

[–]mcgt 3 points4 points ago

That frog needs to step up his game. And the fly..he's just a champ.

[–]theycallmealex 1 point2 points ago

... reversed gif?

[–]ygduf 0 points1 point ago

or bug on a string?

[–]BarelyRegal1 0 points1 point ago

It's the Mr. Burns of frogs lol

[–]narwhal_lover72 0 points1 point ago

Only one explanation. Steroids.

[–]tahubob 0 points1 point ago

It's like the Mr. Burns of frogs.

[–]aboynamedsoo 0 points1 point ago

My planet needs me.

[–]Kulturgeschichte 0 points1 point ago

This is fucking amazing!!!

[–]lethargic1 0 points1 point ago

Never give up. Never surrender.

[–]robinthehood 0 points1 point ago

Seems like you would kinda have to hurt the frog to make this commercial.

[–]Miranae 0 points1 point ago

What you never went frog fishing before?

[–]deltron 0 points1 point ago

I don't know about fake, but you can certainly see a fishing line on the fly.

[–]rekabis 0 points1 point ago

My first thought, considering I have a BSc in Physics and Mathematics, was a very incredulous “Wat DaFuq?!”

And then I read the comments. And yes, I ended up LOLing my arse off taking second and third looksies at that GIF. Gotta root for the underdog, ya know!

[–]Newguy23 0 points1 point ago

FLY NORRIS!!!

[–]krangles 0 points1 point ago

On his way to bug citayeyaya

[–]BluntVorpal 0 points1 point ago

I shall call him 'Gronk'.

[–]HenryFischerV 0 points1 point ago

"yeah dinner! Oh shi- oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.."

[–]SirAuron 0 points1 point ago

Guys, the frog just needed a lift. The fly was helping out.

[–]YaSu288 0 points1 point ago

It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A half-gram fly could not carry a ten ounce frog. In order to maintain air-speed velocity, a fly needs to beat its wings four hundred times every second, right?

[–]prodikl 0 points1 point ago

Man, if you think about it. Frogs must be TERRIFYING for insects. It's basically just... GIANT FUCKING MOUTH with JUMPING LEGS and EXTENDING TONGUE. That's the stuff of nightmares, man.

[–]verily_bruh 0 points1 point ago

The worst rapist in the world can empathize.

[–]ScottyDntKnow 0 points1 point ago

Must know if this is a 'shop or if that fly has been stealing my steroids

[–]sofarsogood 0 points1 point ago

IMPOSSIBRU

[–]BranchDavidian 0 points1 point ago

It's ironic because this was the frog that never gave up in the cranes throat.

[–]runsoutofspace -1 points0 points ago

It's a matter of weight ratios...

[–]ijustwantcoffee -1 points0 points ago

TIL flies have adrenaline too.

[–]guymanbob -1 points0 points ago

Oh how I want this to be real

[–]thorax3412 -1 points0 points ago

Bad Luck Brian....lol

[–]DingleHorse -1 points0 points ago

I'm using Firefox. I was viewing the gif and accidentally hit the escape button. Then the gif froze o_o

[–]gracieuhoh 1 point2 points ago

[–]SaikoGekido 0 points1 point ago

Wait, maybe you can explain this. Why did I get downvotes for discovering how to freeze a gif?
