Before I deleted my page I would cull my friend list every two weeks or so. Separate the wheat from the chaff so to speak. If I didn't feel like talking to them in person then I'd let them go. The only person being immune to this was my grandmother of course.

That's a neat idea.

Really though, even though it's called 'friend', it's basically just contact. You may have friends with whom you're friends on facebook, but being a friend on facebook is the equivalent of being in someone's address book twenty years ago.

On a slightly unrelated note, my mother, who is on limited profile and NEVER goes on facebook, just commented on something I posted last year. Lurk much?

I have a three strikes your out rule. If you post something stupid you get a strike, and I notify them via message that they can take a remediation exam to remove the strikes... It works really well so far.

Facebook's utility is based on capitalizing on weak ties.

There are other web apps that do selective social networking, such as Path, but this is not how Facebook is meant to be used.

Haha, I did this for my myspace when I was in high school. I only let 25 friends at a time and I would kick people out and move people in. I even had a group that was a 'waiting list' club. It was ridiculous.

I do a yearly culling of my friends list.
If I haven't interacted with a person in a year time they get the boot. The only redeeming value is if they post interesting or originally funny stuff.
Family get a pass though. But even then I put certain posting restrictions on some (except Mom/Dad).
