This is similar to what my dad does with his fb, he keeps friends based on how interesting he determines their posts to be, and his cap is at 25. It was a sad day when he unfriended me.

[–]Crosshare 5 points6 points ago

You're a redditor, you have no excuses for having boring content.

[–]captainpoopoo 7 points8 points ago

I think everyone on Reddit is so scared of being "that guy" on facebook who posts content from Reddit like its theirs, that no one actually posts anything funny or interesting so it just gets covered with shitty 9gag posts that everyone bitches about. Kind of a sad, vicious circle if you ask me

[–]Bracks3 1 point2 points ago

And therein lies my problem.

ZALGO.

[–]uhsamantha[S] 9 points10 points ago

hahaha, i'll take the shit. i should have expected it from reddit. i actually will admit i could not figure out how to make a black box over it. i was defeated..so i turned to elvish.

[–]Deronoth 0 points1 point ago

Yes, you wouldn't want people to know Danielle Heder's name. Just paste the image to MS Paint and drag a black box over it using the rectangle tool. This was fun to decode though =P

[–]uhsamantha[S] 0 points1 point ago

well, lucky for me my scribble did the job. incorrect!

[–]angryflamer100 0 points1 point ago

It really didn't...

[–]electronicmail 0 points1 point ago

im sure Danielle wont mind

[–]spruce_goose 0 points1 point ago

what is .... rectangle?

[–]grzzzly 340 points341 points ago

They should make this mandatory. 10 friends max.

Imagine the competition on the news feed. People would fight for staying in friends lists with witty posts and good grammar.

[–]workinghard9 117 points118 points ago

If you want this to be mandatory just join google +. 10 people is pretty much everyone on the site.

[–]belligerent_bear 20 points21 points ago

When it hits 11, shits gonna get real.

[–]WhiteMouse 22 points23 points ago

Isn't the app Path supposed to be something like this, but with a 50-person limit?

[–]ThePiemaster 19 points20 points ago

Perhaps some sort of novel voting system, where you can vote posts up or down.

[–]Xenophilus 3 points4 points ago

Oh how I wish there was some kind of anonymous way to tell people I did not like some part of their status, without correcting their grammar in the comments and sounding like a total dick. Then again, if pseudonyms were allowed, I could make a "novelty account" that did nothing but correct other people's grammar.

[–]IAbductCows 0 points1 point ago

Well Facebook's already trying to be twitter...

[–]propagandascientist 124 points125 points ago*

So what you're saying is... Facebook needs to get more capitalistic in order for the quality of its content to improve? If so, I know about 30 libertarians who would jizz their pants at this idea.

Edit: omfg semantics

[–]cakedestroyer 72 points73 points ago

But would any of those be your 10?

[–]propagandascientist 45 points46 points ago

Not one. Hmm.

[–]Tactful 11 points12 points ago*

Just do what I do, and switch everyone you don't like to "only important". That way you only hear from them if they change sexy-partners or die or something. It's a lot closer to real friendships in that regard.

[ed] Click on the arrow next to their status update, and select 'only important'. It's basically a way of ignoring them without de-friending them, which people get quite annoyed about... especially if you have to see them the next day at work or whatever.

[–]what_user_name 3 points4 points ago

this actually sounds like a good idea

[–]ThisIsMyCouchAccount 6 points7 points ago

If I don't care enough to see any day-to-day stuff I sure don't care if they if they got a new fuck buddy. Perhaps too passive aggressive, but I just hide them. My wall is 75% people I interact with in real life or real friends that don't live near me.

That, and cute girls that I think might post bikini pics this summer.

[–]lollerkeet 23 points24 points ago

He only knows 40 people, and not one of them would make the top 15.

[–]propagandascientist 0 points1 point ago

Well played.

[–]Kazang 27 points28 points ago

Or he is saying that appropriate regulation encourages competition and results in better quality content.

0.o

[–]I_divided_by_0-[!] 18 points19 points ago

How is that libertarian? I see a government (facebook) imposing a restriction (10 friends) on a citizen (users).

More like Sociologists would jizz their pants to see that experiment.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

Yeah, because a higher authority imposing strict regulation is definitely libertarian. /s

[–]propagandascientist 1 point2 points ago*

The free market provides incentives for this kind of *practice. Just because a government body isn't behind it, it doesn't mean one individual won't try to limit another's access to his/her services when such limitations becomes profitable. Government is still a higher authority here... Your comment is nonsense...

[–]MalcolmReynoldsWrap 1 point2 points ago

Add me to the list as I've already gotten new underwear. Twice.

[–]SavageReindeer 1 point2 points ago

I have you tagged as "HumbleRelationshipGuru."

[–]MalcolmReynoldsWrap 1 point2 points ago

It was from back when I gave several paragraphs of advice as to why the friendzone can turn into something quite beautiful as long as you're honest with yourself and your new friend.

[–]SavageReindeer 1 point2 points ago

Figured it would be something like that.

[–]MalcolmReynoldsWrap 1 point2 points ago

Why, cause I said it on reddit, and reddit seems so obsessed with the friendzone?

[–]SavageReindeer 0 points1 point ago

Pretty much.

[–]MalcolmReynoldsWrap 1 point2 points ago

Well, then, now I have you tagged as "SomeoneWhoActuallyLikesMyAdvice".

[–]SavageReindeer 1 point2 points ago

I love being tagged!

[–]elperroborrachotoo 1 point2 points ago

Not more capitalistic, just making "friend" a limited resource.

[–]propagandascientist 0 points1 point ago

But that sounds precisely capitalistic...

[–]elperroborrachotoo 0 points1 point ago

Creating artificial shortage has been used in multiple situations, it's not specifically capitalistic.

At best, capitalism is based on a pseudoscience that models things like shortages - artificial or not.

[–]soiwasonceindenmark 3 points4 points ago

Competition != capitalism
Capitalism would be if people started charging for their friendship.

[–]propagandascientist 1 point2 points ago

Or if Facebook started charging for individual friendships... Or if Facebook made the first 10 friends free and charged you for any additional friends. Capitalism implies taking advantage of competition within a free market. I never said capitalism was synonymous with competition... That would be especially stupid were I actually taking this as seriously as you.

[–]Naphthos 4 points5 points ago

Imagine the outcasts. Hordes of them... more sullen and depressed than ever before. Reddit's popularity would surge.

[–]EmoFaggot 2 points3 points ago

The outcasts would befriend each other.

[–]Anomander 3 points4 points ago

It rarely seems to work that way.

[–]CommanderSlash 5 points6 points ago

Facebook Hunger Games

[–]VanFailin 1 point2 points ago

I try really hard to be witty but my parents keep asking if I have better things to do with my time. :(

[–]xSorcha 1 point2 points ago

Oooh shudders MySpace flashbacks from hell...

[–]Buttons_McBoomBoom 1 point2 points ago

Isn't this sort of what the front page is?

[–]erikmyxter 0 points1 point ago

I remember hearing of some facebook competitor in which its key feature was that it limited the number of friends you could have to 100. Seems silly to me.

[–]jayen 2 points3 points ago

That would be Path.

[–]ChalkyTannins 1 point2 points ago

Seems silly 'til you try it.

I have my whole family on there, and it's a much more meaningful experience than FB.

[–]seriously-akward10 0 points1 point ago

Im pretty sure there was a website that did that... What was their name again?

[–]jshurwitz 0 points1 point ago

They should at least have little notices when you log in forcing you to reconsider your friendship with people you don't communicate with. A link to unfriend people that says "is (s)he really worth your time?" or "do you see this friendship going anywhere?"

[–]salvadorwii 0 points1 point ago

Like MySpace's top 10?

[–]ToAGasChamberGo 0 points1 point ago

[–]Cinaed 84 points85 points ago

I've never wanted to be someones friend on fb so badly before....

[–]mittahzerb 64 points65 points ago

His own offspring is not worthy of being in his top 10 facebook friends

[–]lidlin 26 points27 points ago

Her misuse of "let's" makes her unworthy.

[–]scstraus 0 points1 point ago

We should find the most famous people we all know and get them to friend him. The one-upsmanship will almost guarantee that he ends up with the most desirable 10 people in the world if he gets enough exposure.

[–]Horkersaurus 42 points43 points ago

Before I deleted my page I would cull my friend list every two weeks or so. Separate the wheat from the chaff so to speak. If I didn't feel like talking to them in person then I'd let them go. The only person being immune to this was my grandmother of course.

[–]Prownilo 25 points26 points ago

You wouldn't talk to your grandmother?

[–]Tenshik 22 points23 points ago

She's racist. It's always a trial sitting through a conversation with her.

[–]Prownilo 4 points5 points ago

Well I can understand that, my grandmother turned 100 recently and I have to remind her 3 times in an hour that I'm her grandson.

[–]BackToTheFanta 25 points26 points ago

Maybe your not on her top 10 to remember list? Although at 100 not much makes that list anymore...perhaps when people get older they don't get Alzheimer's they just realize most shit Isn't worth giving 2 fucks about so their brain forgets it all on purpose unless its Oprah, or kids are on your lawn.

[–]gone_ghotion 2 points3 points ago

His what isn't on her top 10 to remember list? His penis? I agree though, I don't remember it either.

[–]andypants 0 points1 point ago

His not dude, his not.

[–]LudwigsVan 0 points1 point ago

It seems you're suggesting either that racism, like having trouble remembering things, is a common aspect of aging or that racism is by some mechanism inversely related to memory.

[–]SAGORN 1 point2 points ago

You sweet summer child, you're lucky you got a trial!

[–]morphintime 5 points6 points ago

In my experience, people who act like they're running Survivor: Facebook tend to be assholes.

[–]lollerkeet 2 points3 points ago

I have a simple rule: people I'd like to see again. I have ~60 fb friends including family.

[–]houseofthebluelights 0 points1 point ago

My rule is people I actually talk to, or would talk to if they were nearby. I cut it off at 200, and that's a stretch.

[–]emcsk 11 points12 points ago

this is how myspace used to be with your top friends, they gradually increased the amount of top friends you could show on a page realizing it was a mistake, but it wasn't

[–]shillbert 8 points9 points ago

"My Myspace page is all totally pimped out, got people beggin' for my top 8 spaces, yo I'm know pi to 1000 places"

[–]sdhillon 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I don't think people remember this about MySpace. People tried to implement top friends on Facebook when it was initially exploding, but with little success.

[–]Shinhan 0 points1 point ago

Facebook is still trying that

[–]Konstiin 5 points6 points ago

That's a neat idea.

Really though, even though it's called 'friend', it's basically just contact. You may have friends with whom you're friends on facebook, but being a friend on facebook is the equivalent of being in someone's address book twenty years ago.

On a slightly unrelated note, my mother, who is on limited profile and NEVER goes on facebook, just commented on something I posted last year. Lurk much?

[–]kambakht 0 points1 point ago

If she's on limited profile she might only see a few really old posts.

False. The name clearly reads fjfjfkdfjsjsjld

[–]JustinGordon 11 points12 points ago

i thought it was elvish at first

[–]603bruins 2 points3 points ago

The writing on the Ring is in the language of Mordor. Kind of rushed so I cant find a source link right now, but yeah

[–]d00dsm00t 0 points1 point ago

[–]603bruins 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that's a visual of it, but this is what i was going to post earlier.

[–]JustinGordon 0 points1 point ago

reminds me to read the silmarillion again

[–]JustinGordon 0 points1 point ago

which is a bastardized version of elvish, if i'm right

[–]603bruins 0 points1 point ago

From the wiki article I linked to a couple lines up,

The Black Speech was not intentionally modeled on any style, but was meant to be self consistent, very different from Elvish, yet organized and expressive, as would be expected of a device of Sauron before his complete corruption.

[–]zed_zed_top 15 points16 points ago

Accounts don't get more single-use than this.

[–]FlyingPasta 5 points6 points ago

That, gentlemen, is commitment.

[–]Wasgood 23 points24 points ago

His name was Robert Paulson.

[–]iwantabeard 17 points18 points ago

HIS NAME WAS ROBERT PAULSON

[–]Hyperiok 3 points4 points ago

NEVER FORGET.

[–]JizzPoweredSteamboat 113 points114 points ago*

I found her Facebook.

EDIT: Good lord, all I said was that I had found it. I wasn't going to message her. I don't even have a Facebook. Just wanted to see if she was hot.

She isn't.

She's fat.

[–]HappyDays7 67 points68 points ago

Oh, the edit made it SO MUCH BETTER. /s

[–]TLanders 38 points39 points ago*

Well before he was just creepy, now he's informative and creepy. His name is JizzPoweredSteamboat, be happy he just looked at her picture.

P.S. JizzPoweredSteamboat, your name doesn't technically make sense, it would then simply be a Jizzboat. I like the sound of that idea, though, it's got spunk.

[–]Tactful 11 points12 points ago

Steamspunk.

[–]hemlockecho 5 points6 points ago

Perhaps he is burning the jizz

[–]poop-doh_factory 1 point2 points ago

I saw your username and freaked out because I thought you were my dad. That'd be weird. Comment history cleared that up for me.

[–]TLanders 1 point2 points ago

Your dad's name T-something Landers?

Edit: Also, did he take tlanders1977@gmail.com? Because I want it, then I'll have all of the 70s.

[–]poop-doh_factory 1 point2 points ago

Yes it is, and no he didn't.

[–]TLanders 0 points1 point ago

Well, let me know if you find that guy. Dude owes me a gmail account.

[–]NotVerySmarts 13 points14 points ago

no wonder she's not in her dad's top ten.

[–]IAmADr 2 points3 points ago

I totally found her facebook too, and I'd still hit it.

edit: I mean sex by the way, and only in very rare situations should a girl ever be physically hit.

[–]alexanderpas 6 points7 points ago

More specifically, you never hit a lady, but when she hits you, she isn't a lady anymore.

[–]LurksOften 7 points8 points ago

While everyone downvotes you and calls you a dick, I'm going to give you this upvote.

I'm going to make my way into her dad's elite club. Wish me luck, fellow redditors. I'll make a post once I am safely within the walls of sanctity that is Mr. Hader's facebook.

[–]Perohside 1 point2 points ago

Haders gonna hade.

[–]camcam369 3 points4 points ago

Was just about to say this, I love when people fail at anonymizing names. Just use a fucking black rectangle to cover the name FFS

[–]unussapiens 0 points1 point ago

First letter of the second name looks for like an N to me.

[–]zombie_kitten 6 points7 points ago

I have a friend, who on a persons birthday, either sends them a message, or unfriends them.

[–]KennyFukinPowers 0 points1 point ago

Now I know how I'm going to cull the herd.

[–]j8sadm632b 2 points3 points ago

Unfortunately this will eventually lead to a coolness ceiling, and you'll only be able to rope in the 10 coolest people who care whether or not they are friends with the most exclusive facebook profile.

[–]Swades 11 points12 points ago

(Slow clap)

[–]Kohler85 10 points11 points ago

Clap............................................Clap

[–]Jayross 6 points7 points ago

[–]SmarmyCanadian 0 points1 point ago

Explain why anybody would use Path. I'm still in the dark on this one.

[–]Jayross 0 points1 point ago

It's just a smaller, trimmed down social network. The kind for people you see on a daily basis and actually talk to.

I honestly can't say I really use it, mainly because no one I know uses it.

[–]SmarmyCanadian 0 points1 point ago

Is there anything in its design to maintain its limited scope, or could it grow to be its own FB?

[–]Jayross 0 points1 point ago

Well, there is a 100 friend cap. That, and there isn't a normal web version of it.. so all through the mobile app.

[–]SmarmyCanadian 0 points1 point ago

Ah. All-mobile is definitely interesting. Thanks for the info!

[–]tropicallimabean 1 point2 points ago

The name is not crossed out. Seems to be an elf from Middle Earth. I didn't know iPhones supported Elvish.

[–]space_paradox 1 point2 points ago

They don't, that's why the elves have such a hard time on the internet.

[–]magicmingan 1 point2 points ago

I have the cap at 40 - I always thought it was rather low, but now I begin to doubt that and think maybe I should cull the list some more

[–]thatusernameisalre 1 point2 points ago

MySpace top 10?

[–]Pixel_Knight 1 point2 points ago

This guy's dad is so awesome, he doesn't even think his son is cool enough to be his friend.

[–]ErgonomicToaster 1 point2 points ago

He was attempting to integrate himself into the alien culture, of course.

[–]ILiveInYourSkull 0 points1 point ago

Excuse me?

[–]CosmicBard 1 point2 points ago

They're decrying somebody who maintains a finely trimmed friends list?

As though stuffing thousands of faceless nobodies, most of whom you haven't spent more than ten seconds talking to is some sort of point of pride? Some people are terribly shallow.

When some dickbag is tooling with me on XBL, the first thing I do is check their friends list.

Almost nine times out of ten, it's either complete empty or packed to capacity.

[–]WhiskerTickler 2 points3 points ago

What nationality is the person you're texting with?

[–]whitmell 1 point2 points ago

BRB, sending a friend request to Danielle Nader's dad.

[–]SilverZZ 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like the Dad's kid didn't make the cut. tsk tsk

[–]padmonster 0 points1 point ago

Bebo had a top 16 which people did this (moved people in and out depending on friendship). I am surprised Reddit has voted this idea to the frontpage since it goes against a lot of common complaints on here about Facebook.

[–]dial_m_for_me 0 points1 point ago

I actually did this, only the number was 88, than I had to raise it to 111.

[–]aliceis1337 0 points1 point ago

So I'm just guessing she sent a request and was rejected by her father

[–]doodieman17 0 points1 point ago

Give me his name! Please, I will send my resume and personal statement to him. I must join this Elite club.

[–]shtrudl 0 points1 point ago

I see that this is legit, since the phone number/name is covered up

[–]kirbyhood 0 points1 point ago

I have a three strikes your out rule. If you post something stupid you get a strike, and I notify them via message that they can take a remediation exam to remove the strikes... It works really well so far.

[–]SuperMarioChess 0 points1 point ago*

I only have 20. I don't add anyone I don't like. Piss me off even a little and your gone. Your dad just encouraged me to boot a few people :)

[–]nostradamuz 0 points1 point ago

Facebook's utility is based on capitalizing on weak ties.

There are other web apps that do selective social networking, such as Path, but this is not how Facebook is meant to be used.

[–]timtamboy63 0 points1 point ago

It'd be interesting to make an algorithm to rank people by their fb profiles, and then have it auto-detect if the new friend is more desirable.

[–]doesnotgetthepoint 0 points1 point ago

What a circus!, may have to use that in the future

[–]awoh 0 points1 point ago

Yeah last year I went through my friend list and unfriended anyone who wasn't a real friend of mine. I went from about 200 to 80 friends.

[–]user_reformed 0 points1 point ago

This is how I used to use myspace. My top 6 was my only 6.

[–]SpiritZR1 0 points1 point ago

I only have 7, and I'm thinking of getting rid of 2 as is

[–]betamark 0 points1 point ago

Yay i'm not the only one.

[–]harbinger44 0 points1 point ago

i have a 100 friend rule max. therefore it is much more likely that i am extremely familiar with anyone on my friends list.

also makes me feel safer when going into job interviews

[–]supergalactic 0 points1 point ago

People with several hundred 'friends' on FB frighten me.

[–]SavageReindeer 0 points1 point ago

I'm actually going to do this soon, albiet, with more than 10 people. I've been bringing down my friends list to 150 for the past few weeks. I might bring it down to 100 maybe. After that I plan to maintain that number.

[–]Mcelite 0 points1 point ago

Homerow keys FTW.

[–]avatarr 0 points1 point ago

This is sort of how Path is. Of course the cap is higher, but it's much more refined. I still prefer G+ over both. I need to sever ties with FB. I wish G+ had API support.

[–]jdsamford 0 points1 point ago

Danielle Haden.

[–]BigFatMooCow 0 points1 point ago

So in other words we want Myspace back

[–]coronavegas 0 points1 point ago

This is how I use Twitter, however it's sorrily unintentional. It's more like a club you walk into and walk out of, because nobody is there.

[–]AcidicSuperSam 0 points1 point ago

I am so doing this.

[–]amadea56 0 points1 point ago

Haha, I did this for my myspace when I was in high school. I only let 25 friends at a time and I would kick people out and move people in. I even had a group that was a 'waiting list' club. It was ridiculous.

[–]VictorRomeo 0 points1 point ago

I do a yearly culling of my friends list.
If I haven't interacted with a person in a year time they get the boot. The only redeeming value is if they post interesting or originally funny stuff.
Family get a pass though. But even then I put certain posting restrictions on some (except Mom/Dad).

[–]AdmiralGingerton 0 points1 point ago

More people should do this.

[–]StanDinfamy 0 points1 point ago

Tried this on soundcloud for publicity, didn't work out so well

[–]filthysize 0 points1 point ago

Didn't read the title and thought "fb" stands for "fuckbuddy."

It actually still works that way if you ignore that one mention of "page."

I do the same thing, except I found that 60 is a good number.

My dad actually does this. He won't be my friend and only accepts his band members and other "musicians"

How i imagine these people speak http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALtixP8vco4

Thank you for reminding me to clean out my Facebook friends list.

[–]mynameisNEO 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of myspace back in '05/'06. I remember having eight slots for "Top Friends" that I would adjust based on awesomeness.

I like his style!

Reminds me of this Belgium video 'What if Facebook didn't exist?' People shooting: 'Be friends with me!' through megafoon.. Too bad it is in Dutch:

This is what Path is for! I have 13 close friends of mine on it. Thats it. Only important news, photos, and checkins. Nothing clogging up my feed. It's great.

[–]shillbert 3 points4 points ago

Oh, I thought you said "chickens". It probably doesn't have chickens. Facebook has chickens.

[–]MissMumbai 1 point2 points ago

Did no one else think of Sheldon ???

[–]johkonut 0 points1 point ago

LETS. IT'S LETS.

[–]SnoKone 0 points1 point ago

Only if we can make people fight to the death in order to secure a spot in the top ten, Gladiator style.

[–]JKMonbie 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like Path. Capped at 150 friends, but the less you have the better.

[–]cakedestroyer 0 points1 point ago

What an interesting way to censor someone's name.

[–]lenchmob 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry your dad unfriended you.

[–]SirHector 0 points1 point ago

It is so tempting to do this. However there are so many idiots on my Facebook that I enjoy laughing at on a day to day basis.

Danielle Nader.
