Words cannot express how put off and bothered I was by every single thing he did in that movie, and how he did it. It was the perfect image of the man who is thinking troublesome circles around everyone he sees. That actor is a fucking genius and possibly better than Pitt in that movie.

[–]Daedric_Princess 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They were both brilliant, but the way Christoph Waltz portrayed Landa was incredible. Pitt was able to stay with his sort-of snarky-ness, which probably made it a more comfortable role. They were still both great, but Waltz takes the prize.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Michael Cera had to be explained why this joke was funny while they were shooting it.

[–]bluesunglasses2134 225 points226 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can't imagine this kid really being that awkward in real life...either way the whole idea of him not understanding the jokes makes it 10000 times better.

[–]yeahhhsortof 62 points63 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I got to see him talk to a few students at my university about the time Youth in Revolt came out, and I was very surprised that he was just as awkward in real life as he was in the movies.

[–]YouListening 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, if I ever meet Cera in person, I'll try to orchestrate something to make him seem so awkwardly angsty, I can base a movie on it.

[–]Dustin- 13 points14 points ago

He really is. Someone I know was in a hotel somewhere in California, and his room overlooked the outdoor bar and the pool. It just so happened that there was some party going on and there were a bunch of celebrities there, one of whom was Michael Cera. Guess who was the one who was standing alone in the corner with a backpack on? I really wish my friend took a picture of that moment...

[–]Lampmonster1 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well what do you know. I always called that "The Die Hard Theory." Basically Die Hard seems formulaic now, but only because it has been endlessly copied since it came out. When it first came out the 80s action movie was the standard, and Die Hard reintroduced some realism and decent writing to the genre.

[–]mobileDevKing 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are right, i took a stuffy film class in college and they actuallly used Die Hard as the genre template for the modern action film. Lots of audio innvoation as well, with the suspenseful music that "Micky Mouses" IE, when characters are sneaking the musical score is making silly little (tip tap) noises to just build the suspense.

[–]mobileDevKing 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most action movies before Die Hard were zany unrealistic fair like Rambo and James Bond. Movies were you were never afraid for the main character.

There were some gritty , terrifying action movies like Terminator(1984) but that movie was so gritty and hard core it left people wanting to go home and assume the fetal position. Wheras die hard was serious and gritty, but the director (through music and often through situational irony) is constantly giving the audience winks/nods to the audience(relax, he might die, but keep eating your popcorn, this is still fun). Terminator 2 took lessons, and even stole several scenes (shooting down at the cop cars from a tall building) from Die Hard, and was much more well received than the original. All the 90s action movies were just Die Hard in different place (Under Siege (Die Hard in a sub), The Rock (Die Hard in a prison/island), Die Hard in a plane (all plane terorist movies) etc..)

[–]Lampmonster1 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. As I recall Under Siege actually advertised using the line "Die Hard on a boat". Talk about taking something out of context. It was a criticism.

I think I enjoyed the original because i was 16 or so when it came out, so the idea of getting laid , HS issues, drinking at parties, masturbatory jokes, going to college seemed fresh and relevant to me. Once I was the same age as the characters I realized it was just formulaic and relied on my own naivety and crude immature sense of humor at the time i watched it. Other pieces dealing with the same age group (fast times at RH, dazed and confused, most 80s brat pack movies) confront the same genre from a more mature perspective.

[–]heerus 4 points5 points ago

Millions of dollars and the careers of Chris Klein, Tara Reid, Jason Biggs and Sean William Scott beg to differ.

[–]LLv2 9 points10 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of the four you listed, only Sean William Scott has been working in high-visibility projects over the last ten years, and his light has dimmed with each passing year. Alison Hannigan is the only one from that cast who has retained her visibility without American Pie rehashes.

No one has cast Jason Biggs in a lead role for a theatrical feature since Saving Silverman. Tara Reid has become a reality show joke of botched plastic surgeries.

Fun fact. Ralph Maccio was 23 in the first Karate Kid movie. What's really funny was that by the third movie, when Maccio was Still playing the roll at 28, he was only one year younger than the guy playing the evil karate instructor. The guy that was supposed to be a war buddy of the first evil instructor. Something to be said for good genes.

I've never watched Arrested Development. I've seen only one episode so far, but of course the pilot never maintains my attention. Someone tell me what makes it so great compared to other comedy television shows?

[–]Lrrr23 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The second episode. Watch it, and you should see.

[–]scragar 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's the sort of show where watching it a second time reveals a ton of little jokes you missed earlier.

For me that means that it's a show I'll actually find funny more than once, which is rare given that a majority of TV shows now are predictable even on the first viewing.

That's just my PoV on it though, sure other people might have other reasons for liking it.

[–]jparishy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's all about the writing. The writers for Arrested Development were just a of a higher caliber than most of the shitty TV shows on these days. You can see it in other shows, too; Community and New Girl also have incredible writers that totally make the show. The actors are really good, too, but are totally riding on their writers' genius.

[–]TheDudeaBides96 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The jokes are pretty original, and the complete unawareness of other people's actions by the characters just gives a very "Catch 22" feeling to the episodes. There's a lot of irony involved.

[–]knobrot 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What Lrrrr said. Once you get in you'll know why you gave it a chance with "the second episode"

I only rate AD and Curb these days. Those two share a common calibre of epicage.

[–]Tfish 0 points1 point ago

It felt like the television version of the royal tenenbaums to me, and that's what made it awesome.
