It's a question that requires no reasoning as this simply complicates the matter. Surprisingly, physics and maths (at any level - with this being a very basic example) both look for simplistic approaches towards problems which, ironically, make them more difficult. T'is why people in these areas love what they do. (:

I don't think that teacher spends a lot of time in the wood shop. Abstractly you could argue that 10 minutes of work to produce 2 pieces of board equals 5 minutes a piece.

Back in the real world it takes Marie 10 minutes to measure and saw once. Three pieces from the same board doubles the measuring and cutting.

It's a badly written question. I hope that kid argued with his teacher.
