The fish is probably even more nervous. Especially seeing as in order to survive it needs filtration, and a great deal of a larger tank! Goldfish cannot be kept in these bowls! They WILL die a slow death, likely due to the fact that they are swimming in their own sewage.

If you want to keep fish properly, the kind folks at /r/aquariums will be glad to offer you advice!

Thank you. Why people consistently put one or more fish in a tank that small is beyond me.

I had a goldfish in a small bowl like this for close to 2 years before it died. Every single day I took out a cup of old water and poured In a new one. Simple filtration, and It worked... unless goldfish are supposed to be 10+ years old

Depends. Some goldfish can live upwards of twenty to thirty years.

It really doesn't take a lot to keep a fish healthy and happy. A tank that can hold them properly, filtration (Heavy for a goldfish, they produce lots of mess) and a few other items. However, you'll need to learn about the Nitrogen Cycle before you have any fish in your tank.

Visit r/aquariums and learn more about our fishy pals.

I know you mean it good and all, especially considering fish are living creatures, but you remind me of a dude in a music store, who wouldn't want to sell me a harmonica unless I had studied the doctrine of music...

[–]Akakaburito 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha, I know. I can come off to as a bit of a whack-job to a lot of people who don't know the joys of fish, but it really is true. And also considering so many people unknowingly mistreat their fish. You can't slowly kill a harmonica!

Did you add declorinator to the water first? And yes Goldfish can live up to 10 years and should get 4-6 inches. Most likely he died from stunted growth. Thats why people think fish only get as big as the tank. Because they die when they have no more room to grow.

[–]philge 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They have a life span significantly longer than 10 years. The oldest recorded goldfish died at the ripe age of 43! Goldfish will easily live 20 years or more with proper care.

[–]BikiniWoman 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit, I can't imagine living that long in the same damn aquarium every single day. Good thing they don't have the mental capacity to give a fuck.

[–]philge 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The have a much larger mental capacity than you would think. They can be quite friendly, and often even get excited when they see their owners. They can be even be taught to do tricks and play games like soccer!

Regardless, it doesn't take much mental capacity to experience suffering. Goldfish in unfiltered fish bowls will die slowly. Most likely from being suffocated by their own sewage.

The point I'm trying to make is that you should not commit to getting a pet if you are not going to care for it properly. There is no such thing as a "throwaway pet!"

Maybe you were just lucky ... I can't see how that worked? Instead of swimming in 100% of his own shit, he's now constantly swimming in 95% of his own shit thanks to the 1 clean cup that keeps getting added and 'diluting' it

[–]barrettj 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That would only be true if he waited until the water was 100% waste to start.

[–]Xpress_interest -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Butnover the years the percentage of shit would slowly increase, due to the fact that only one cup of the new week's brew was being replaces. By the time that fish suffocated in its own scat, it was probably chilling at around the 95% mark.

[–]imfm 86 points87 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure they do. They don't care about the view, of course, but they do notice what goes on outside the tank. Anyone who's ever kept fish can tell you that they'll get excited when someone approaches the tank because they have learned that humans mean food. More territorial (read: more aware) species will even learn which humans mean food. My husband once tried to feed my bettas and mbuna because I was sick, but they didn't understand what he was doing because the only person who'd ever fed them was me. I had to get out of bed and come to the tank for the bettas because they are hand-fed and wouldn't surface for him. The cichlids figured it out eventually, but it took a while. The bettas had even learned in what order I fed them, and they'd do their little "happy fish dance" when I was feeding the one right before. I had one betta hide for two days, refusing to eat...until I put back the potted plant that had been beside his tank for as long as I'd had him. Mensa isn't going to be knocking on their tank lids any time soon, but fish aren't as stupid as most people think.

[–]brownboy13 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is ridiculously fascinating. I've never considered fish to be "active" pets before. They've always been background for me. Any more stories?

[–]Akakaburito 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A lot of people are surprise by how wonderful fish can be.. I have a large community tank full of a random bunch of fish, including Mollies, Bettas, Cories and German Blue Rams.

My Mollies are incredibly, incredibly friendly. The tank is in my room, in view of my bed, so every morning I find a large pit in the sand in the corner from where they've been digging, trying to get closer to me. They will also swim up and sit in my hand while its in the tank. My rams aren't quite as friendly, but will occasionally swim up for a little cuddle. Yes, I said cuddle.

My betta is very interesting. I fell in love with him in the pet store and I imagine he feels the same. He won't dig in the sand or come cuddle with me like the others, but he'll consistently make eye contact with me while I observe/clean the tank, and follow me to each side. He also does the above-mentioned 'happy fish dance' while he's fed, and will jump out of the water for a little dried blood worm.

In short.. fish are great. I can't imagine treating them any different than another pet, like my dog or bird. They bring me so much joy, I'm sad to see people pass them off like they're nothing.

[–]Akakaburito 6 points7 points ago*

If fish are well taken care of, they can make wonderful pets. It's the ignorance of people that cause them to be maltreated and forgotten. They rely on your care just like any other animal, probably more so. You keep control of their entire world, in four glass walls!

[–]stagier_malingering 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, this is so very true! I got a betta as a present when I was young. I couldn't afford to get a bigger tank at the time, so he lived inside his bowl for about a month.

When I moved him over to a 10 gallon with a proper filtration system and aerator, man was he elated. He must have spent at least the first half hour darting around and checking everything out. He was always far more energetic after that. I got him a couple of other tank-mates too, and he seemed to dig it.

Since the tank was right by my bed, he'd come to uh, say goodnight, I guess? He'd pop over to the side closest to the bed and do a bit of a back and forth wiggle that was completely different from his I'm-getting-food dance. He also swam towards the surface of the tank and chilled whenever I had to net him, so that was really convenient.

Man, I miss that fish.

[–]Akakaburito 0 points1 point ago

I'm glad your betta got to lead such a lucky life that few of his kind ever experience! Many people believe Betta's can survive merely in a bowl just because of their labrynthe organ... it doesn't mean they can survive in their own poop! I'm sorry to hear he passed. Have you thought of getting another?

[–]feureau 2 points3 points ago

Well, when I first bought my rams (two of them) the male was very active and happy, but the female was very nervous and would sulk in the bottom of the tank. Whenever I fed them, the male would dart back and find the female and nudge her out to the open so she would eat. Then he'd let her hide again.

After a while, she did recover, and is now just as friendly as the male. However, I always remember a specific time during the period of her adjusting, where she had wandered out to the front of the tank while I was watching. Hesitantly, I placed my finger on the glass, and she slowly came near. It was a bit of a bonding moment, even if she darted away right after there, and it made me feel a little hopeful.

(She's fine now, in case you're wondering. She and the male have even paired up, and although no eggs yet, fingers are crossed!)

I also have an eel, who is very friendly, much like the Mollies. I hand feed him worms and he nuzzles my hand when its in the tank and he wants food. Which is.. all the time really. Some times even my shrimp will sneak up while I'm not paying attention, and snatch a worm out of my hand!

Oh, I forgot to add. I recently got a bird, and I had him perched on the rim of the tank while I fed the fish. He was peering down curiously, and my Betta, Alex, came up and jumped up, thinking his beak was a tasty treat. Certainly scared the baby, but gave me a laugh.

My friend had an Oscar that would wake him up by spitting rocks at the glass when he was hungry.

[–]LavenderLily16 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Our convict cichlid did this. His tank was near the dining room table and he would tap on the glass if he saw us eating and we hadn't fed him yet. He was a character. He'd tolerate algae eaters, until all the algae was gone, then he'd eat them. One time there was a feeder fish with a Napoleon complex; the first thing he did when we put him in the tank was to start trying to attack the big guy. The cichlid ignored it for a while, but when it didn't stop, he bit off the feeder's fins. He didn't eat him, he just incapacitated him and let him die slowly. Come to think of it, he was kind of scary.

[–]friedrice5005 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I caught my Oscar trying to train me once. He figured out that he could jump out of the water and knock the tank's cover. If he did this enough I would usually go over and throw a few pieces of food in the tank to shut him up. I felt used when I realized what was going on.

It's true.. but try to look at it from their perspective. For a lot of people, they dedicate their lives to caring for fish. And for every goldfish or betta in a tiny bowl with no filter they see, they get a bit more annoyed that 'why can't this person just do some research?'. I'm not saying they have an excuse to be rude and nasty, but it's just some food for thought.

It really won't. If there's no filter, unless you're doing a 100% water change, the fish will still be swimming in its own toxins every day.

You can try to show her this so she can learn about the nitrogen cycle and how it will hurt her fish.

[–]Gregophocles 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Frequent water changes do not negate the need for a filter. They do different things. Even with a filter you should be changing 10-25% of the water weekly, ideally. Water changes in a filtered, cycled tank just removes nitrates. A filter is necessary to support the nitrogen cycle which keeps ammonia levels down in the water. Obviously it also filters out any physical waste as well.

It's 2 students start up company from sheffield, they're straight out of uni and this was one of their final pieces of work. Each of the bubble tanks has to be handblown, which is why it costs £295. They're really nice guys too, everyone go buy one, show them some support.
