Thankfully, they got all the ticks off. There was a lot.

[–]InferiousX 19 points20 points ago

Jesus god that just makes me unsettled.

I would have to dry them off, put them into a small kerosene soaked pile and burn them all alive. Sitting Indian style while gazing at them and listening to their small cries of anguish.

It's the only way I could sleep

[–]J-Holm 1 point2 points ago

they make a snap sound when you set them on fire. did it to one that was on my dog once after i got it off. set a match on it.

[–]darkfrost47 2 points3 points ago

Seriously. All ticks and mosquitoes need to burn. Do they serve any purpose at all in an ecosystem?

[–]TravelingAce 4 points5 points ago

Yes. Even if we don't see it, or we don't see it as positive. An ecosystem functions properly as a whole and it's more then just the sum of it's parts.

I too hate the fuck out of mosquitoes, ticks don't really bother me.

[–]darkfrost47 2 points3 points ago

What would happen without mosquitoes? Is there really an animal that has them as it's main meal?

[–]TravelingAce 2 points3 points ago

Complex systems are difficult to fully and accurately understand.

Bats. Birds. Dragon flies.

And it might just be that the purpose of the mosquito is to spread disease and kill humans off. We are a plaque on this planet and malaria kills hundreds of millions of people every year. That might be a good thing. It might be a part of the natural order. We are not above nature.

[–]darkfrost47 1 point2 points ago

I wouldn't go so far as to say we're a plague on the planet. Sure, we produce toxins and kill animals, but many animals would be dying off anyways and evolution creates new bacteria to eat the toxins. I remember reading something on /r/science about bacteria being discovered that could digest plastic and have organic waste. The fact is that nature is amazing. I really don't think humans are advanced enough to make a huge impact. Eventually we're all going to die off and nature will turn everything we've made into dust. I was watching discovery and it said that in as little as 1000 years all of our modern buildings and bridges and machines would be gone. No trace. The pyramids will last longer than all the industrial stuff we've built and that's only because they're made of stone.

All in all I wouldn't give humans enough credit to be called a "plague." I think we're just here for a small time and eventually we'll be gone. Sure, we have the power to change things. But even if we happen to destroy something, nature will fill the gap. We couldn't beat it if we tried.

*I am not defending the killing of animals or destruction of nature, just commenting on my opinion of human impact.

[–]TravelingAce 3 points4 points ago

I agree with you. But here's just one definition of plague that we certainly fit : a destructively numerous influx <a plague of locusts>

[–]darkfrost47 0 points1 point ago

Dang. Caught me lol.

But I really believe people think too much of human impact in the long run.

[–]TravelingAce -1 points0 points ago

I agree.

[–]EndingPop 0 points1 point ago

Mosquitoes are one of the major ways certain ecosystems get an influx of protein. It's stolen from mammals in the form of blood and passed to mosquito predators.

[–]gatorsrule 0 points1 point ago

"One bat can eat 600 mosquitoes in an hour!"

[–]Bobdoleomega 0 points1 point ago

FIsh eat a lot of Mosquitos

[–]hey_n0w 0 points1 point ago

Read Parasite Rex by Carl Zimmer and you'll gain a new, albeit weird, appreciation for the complexity of parasites.

Now, mosquitoes aren't parasites, but it'll answer/complicate your question as to "do they serve any purpose in the ecosystem" [Spoiler: yes]

[–]Gracksploitation -2 points-1 points ago

Are you seriously asking that? Next time type it in Google and click "I'm feeling lucky."

[–]urkaho 3 points4 points ago

but how the fuck did that even happen? someones horribly neglected pet or what??

[–]darkfrost47 2 points3 points ago

I found the original thread. Seems it was a wild snake someone found and helped. It should be fine.

[–]hey_n0w 1 point2 points ago

This snake was wild, found off the Gold Coast in Australia.

Massive tick infestations aren't rare on wild snakes. --- But they're always fucking creepy.

[–]urkaho 0 points1 point ago

ugh im glad i dont live outside

[–]IrisIllych 3 points4 points ago

Why did I click the the second pic.

I'm happy for the snake, but I need to go thoroughly comb over every inch of my body for ticks.

[–]instant_human 8 points9 points ago

Snake? SNAKE?! SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!!!!!!!

[–]mingmingcherry 13 points14 points ago

[–]oodelay 1 point2 points ago

[–]sjizzle 1 point2 points ago

I sat in a deer tick nest when i was 3, I was covered head to toe.. needless to say ticks really freak me out man

[–]kvanttimekaniikka 1 point2 points ago

They have nests?! Does anyone have any photos, so I can avoid those at all costs? Anyway, that must've been terrible. shivers

[–]KPop_Teen 1 point2 points ago

The huge shiny ones looked like rocks at first glance.

[–]SpicyBathTime 1 point2 points ago

It's 1 AM. I'm tired. Too bad I imagined my bed full of bloodthirsty ticks.

[–]MarySwanson 2 points3 points ago

"Get them ooooooooooooooooooooff!!"

[–]takeapieandrun 1 point2 points ago

How would the snake ever naturally remove them? Wouldn't this eventually lead to death if it couldn't?

[–]sardu1 0 points1 point ago

Instead of taking picture, pull those fuckers out and burn them!!

[–]RiverRunnerVDB 0 points1 point ago

I once saw a dog along the road that was covered in ticks like that along its entire body, most horrible thing I have ever seen...had nightmares for days afterwards

[–]fartandburp 0 points1 point ago

The huge ones freak me out because of how long they had to have been there to be THAT full with blood. shivers

[–]euchaotic 0 points1 point ago

I like my snakes like I like my women. Covered in TICKS.

[–]blackbeans 0 points1 point ago

If there is one thing I hate more than snakes, it is ticks. I WANT TO DIE.

[–]paulfknwalsh 0 points1 point ago

if evolution was a person i would kiss them on the mouth for giving us arms and fingers and opposable thumbs.

[–]melibelly99 0 points1 point ago

I'm sad but at least tht got them of u love love animals

[–]reconnection 0 points1 point ago

What's that ?

[–]CosmicRave[S] 2 points3 points ago

It's covered in ticks, to my understanding.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

HOLY FUCKING NOPE

[–]2bitPixel 6 points7 points ago

Those are ticks!? I was thinking it was some sickness where some of its scales enlarge or something.

Holy fuck.

[–]DerelictDiety 7 points8 points ago

Looks like ticks to me. Trust me, I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once.
