The thing is if you're going by points the monk just shed them away to Riddell with the free shots. But I think everyone still knew who the tougher man was. At the end Yi Long gets the smaller trophy to Riddell's as he lost the fight but like 45 seconds later a trophy that dwarfs Riddell's is presented to Yi Long. Yi Long is the fricken man.

Yeah, I really got the impression that (respect to Riddell) Yi Long kinda figured out that he wasn't going to knock him out, and that everything was - thus far - pretty balanced. So he 'won outright' in the only way he could be sure to do so: "Here, have all the points and the 'victory', I'll just prove that you couldn't knock me out if I was tied to a tree". =)

I've not been following the Muaythai Scene for a while but why the hell didn't John wayne get this fight?

Also, the chinese guy was basically a thaiboxer with pants who threw a spinning kick ocassionally and had some dumb decisions. This is the first time I've seen a shaolin monk box and throw lowkicks.

Having said that; Respect to both fighters. Also with some work on his technique the chinese guy could really become something. His skull is fucking titanium. I haven't seen anyone take this much punishment since Sato/Masato/Buakaw.

Just out of curiosity, is this something you have personal experience with? I am not a fighter, not even in terms of training but not real fighting, but it is my understanding that part of the difference is how much harder you are ABLE to hit someone when you're wearing gloves, despite the padding; as I understand it, if most gloved-boxing folks hit something hard, like, say, a person's head, as hard as they normally punch with gloves on, they'd shatter most of the bones in their hands. Granted, they'd probably knock whoever the hit the fuck out too, but...

I have been kickboxing since I was 14 (now 28) and in my earlier years got into a good number of scraps...the main difference in my experiences with gloved and ungloved hands, is for example...taking a baseball bat and putting a big foam sleeve over it. You can still swing that bat with the same force as without, but the impact is much more violent w/o the sleeve. I have hit people just as hard with and without gloves on and it takes far less to have the same effect bare knuckled , as opposed to gloves on. You are correct with the inverse of that, its WAY easier to bust every bone in your hand if you are hitting at a bad angle bare knuckled..also your wrists are at a much higher risk of damage.

I don't know the specifics of this fight, but you see how the guy getting hit is leaning his head into the blows? Most of these he deflects or absorbs with the strong, bony part of his skull as you're supposed to. A couple land to the side a little bit at the upper area of the jaw which isn't so bad, but it's not in the critical areas that cause enough shock to knock you out.

Either way, he should have his guard up but I'd have to watch the whole fight to figure out what's the dilly here...he could also just be intimidating the other guy.

There are 3 strong bones in your body: Knees, the forefront of your skull, and your elbows (elbows being the strongest). Your hands are made of many tiny bones which is why you shouldn't punch people in the head with a closed fist in many cases...people like to headhunt like this but often end up with broken hands (also, imagine punching down on a guy, missing, and hitting pavement).

Maybe, it depends. Basically as long as the punches aren't turning his head, and aren't landing on the softer parts he will be able to take shots like this for quite some time, and likely the opponent may either break his hand or punch himself out.

When you are punching someone in the head, you really want to hit them in the nose if you are hitting them directly, or in the jaw if coming in from the side (like with a hook).

I agree with diabloenfuego, hitting someone in the head with your fists is a bad idea.

I think he was trying to intimidate him. He was trying to show off his super cool Shaolin monk training, feign weakness, and take the other guy by surprise at the right moment. His tactic didn't work very well because the other guy didn't really let his guard down. It was a nice try, though.

I agree with you. It's not a very intelligent move as you should never put your guard down. If you're not in the 'ready' position, someone who's dangerous and fast enough will likely rock you.

Exactly. This is why the elbow is a 'stronger' weapon. It won't break, your knee could if you do it wrong. The guy above is trying to prove something unimportant when the entire point of my statement is this:

If you have to hit someone and you don't want to fuck yourself up, the 3 best body parts to throw or avoid getting hit by are in this order: Elbow, forefront of skull, and then the knee. A knee can have a shit-ton of power since it's coming from your leg, but you're more likely to fuck that up than an elbow. And you can't exactly throw a 'femur' at anyone without them laughing at you and punching you in the nuts.

If you watch the actual youtube video of the fight (which plays a little slower than the .gif), it looks pretty clear to me that he was trying to fake a knockout, sort of falling into the other fighter in the last punch hoping they'd put their guard down before he came in for the surprise. That's just a guess though.

Because at no point during the fight did he lose coherence, self control, the ability to stand and respond, etc. If you watch further than the gif, he comes right back after this - he made the conscious decision to drop his guard and ridicule the other guy, basically.

Kind of an interesting fight all round. The person taking the punches lost, on points, because, well, dropping his guard like that basically skyrocketed his opponents score in what had been an otherwise pretty even bout, but honestly, the humiliation factor for the 'victor'? I kinda feel like the one guy figured "Huh, this is round number lots (I actually can't remember, I think it was 5 or 6?) and I can't seem to actually knock this guy out... I can however prove that he has no way in hell of knocking me out either. Watch the fists bounce off my face! teehee!" or something.
