Christianity teaches that the devil will be punished as well come judgement day as well as for the rest of eternity. It's only popular culture that has him portrayed as the manager or guy behind the desk in hell.

[–]udbluehens 6 points7 points ago

Infinite punishment is unjust for any finite crime. god cannot do this, or else he is unjust. If he is unjust we must rise up against him and fight him.

Luckily, he doesnt exist, and eventually this mythology will be turned into a God of War series game

[–]Grundon 2 points3 points ago

I'll only play it if Morgan Freeman voices god.

[–]udbluehens 1 point2 points ago

And Jim Carrey as Kratos.

Oh speaking of god of war, did you notice how in GOW 2 and possibly 3, there are paintings on some walls involving wise men going towards a star, hinting not so subtly at christianity?

[–]Grundon 0 points1 point ago

I haven't played any of them. But I hear they are good. But from what you described it could be hinting to christianity.

[–]rpridz 0 points1 point ago

Just think of that game. You go through the first few level learning special skills (water waking) and other things to get you past bosses. Finnaly your luck runs out you die (or so you think) then like obiwan in star wars you become more powerful is death and get a bunch of cool new powers... Badass.

So evil exists because destroying it is not on God's schedule for today?

[–]obyeo[S] -5 points-4 points ago

yeah but i that doesnt change the fact that until that day comes, he punishes the evil

[–]cuck 4 points5 points ago

Except no theologian believes this. So congratulations on the straw man.

[–]needlestack 1 point2 points ago

If by "he" you mean satan, then no, he's not punishing evil. I've never heard that claim before. The general view, I think, is that satan and his minions tempt people to do evil and are very pleased when they succeed. There is no punishment involved. In fact, it is sometimes said that doing evil in this world will get you riches and power in this world, and the only punishment comes after you've gone on to the next - and it is God that does the punishing.

But then you can probably find lots of variations on that to the point that not much of it makes sense anyway.

[–]raisin_bran_in 0 points1 point ago

Theoretically punishes the evil. If you choose to believe that an an anti-deity who opposes an all powerful deity, who allows that anti-deity to continue existing is real.

[–]obyeo[S] 3 points4 points ago

well i suppose all fairy tails need a good anti-character

[–]raisin_bran_in 1 point2 points ago

Exactly.

My problem with this whole devil thing is that he's portrayed as a fallen angel, yes? He's a fallen angel because he opposed god. But wait, the bible doesn't speak of any angels during genesis. How can an angels who didn't want to punish humans "fall" before the humans even started to sin? Is he a time traveling angel? To the DeLorean!

[–]rpridz 1 point2 points ago

Yeah if you think of it we (hypothetically) should be worhipping the devil because he was the only one who had the balls to stick up for us from a tyrant ruler...

[–]First_thing 0 points1 point ago

Yes but he got whipped back into submission and is doing god's bidding again (maybe, I don't understand the fight between heaven and hell). The minds who invented all this weren't exactly easy to understand.

[–]DarkStar5758 5 points6 points ago

Philosorapter would have been better.

[–]quivering 3 points4 points ago

There's also that weird double-move, where hell is not god's fault -- despite him being omnipotent

[–]Brosabi 2 points3 points ago

I might be wrong if but If i remember correctly in the bible it says that Satan burns along side those who are there for their sins and that God is actually "in charge" of hell, in a sense, but no one likes to mention that part about him.

[–]Lundynne 1 point2 points ago

[–]LeSazAnn 1 point2 points ago

Wrong meme. hat's Conspiracy Keanu. The philosoraptor might have worked better.

"THEY TOOK MY JOB" -the devil

[–]bustrpoindextr 0 points1 point ago

The idea that the devil is evil is actually a common misconception. He was banished because he refused to regard humans as greater than God. It's not that he is specifically "evil" he just hates humans for the fact that he was banished because he refused to serve them over his father. So really he wants to punish all humans, and as such the common misconception is born because it is said that satan will trick you into committing evil acts so that he can later punish you in hell. You gotta hand it to em, some parts of the myth are a pretty good story.

[–]foxtrot3407 0 points1 point ago

The reason why he punishes evil is that he loves to see people suffer no matter what they did on earth. It is not like god is going to let Satan reward people.

[–]foxtrot3407 0 points1 point ago

The devil punishes bad people because he loves to see people suffer, no matter what they did on earth. It is not like god is going to let Satan reward bad people; punishing bad people is all he can get away with.

[–]VAPossum 0 points1 point ago

Because he's evil. That's how evil rolls.

[–]DoctorLost173 0 points1 point ago

He's stuck with them. God punishes them. That's like saying that the top prisoner in alcatraz (the one that beats up the others) is actually the good guy. Meaning you're misunderstanding the bible.

[–]magicalsealion 0 points1 point ago

I honestly thought that Satan would be gods friend if he helps punish people since I was like, 7.

[–]YvesSch 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure that it quite works this way. Imagine a schoolboy bully. He enjoys inflicting pain on other children. Also, he is the biggest, baddest bully around. To keep firm his position, he might like to hang out with other bullies who also like to inflict pain on other children. However, being the biggest, baddest bully, he may also enjoy picking on the bullies that are smaller than he is.

[–]Scaryclouds 0 points1 point ago

Why wouldn't the Devil torture evil people? It's not like Hitler, Stalin, Mao, insert evil person, checked a person's background and was like "oh you are batshit evil as well, go right along" no those bastards were like "I'll show you what evil really looks like."

[–]frenchfrieskl 0 points1 point ago

maybe hell is actually a really chill place and only christians portray it as what we think it is? im an atheist so whatever

[–]GrinningJest3r 0 points1 point ago

This is based on a common misconception. Your idea of Hell probably stems from the media/cultural adaptation from Dante's Divine Comedy. The way I understand the story, the Devil is not the ruler of Hell, nor is he the source of all evil (maybe a modern avatar of what you are should you turn away from God, but that's just my idea) and Hell doesn't even exist yet. Hell will be created at (Rapture? Armageddon? I don't even know what to call it anymore) the end of days and all of the sinners along with Satan himself will be trapped there. The torture and "eternal suffering" that we hear about is each soul knowing once and for all that they are eternally cut off from knowing God's glory. This "punishment" is applied to Satan as well.

Since "Hell" will be free of the believers and their bigotry, we might as well call it Heaven. Not that it matters either way, since neither exist in the first place. But that's how the story goes.

[–]JonahFrank 0 points1 point ago

That was the first question that sent me down the path away from belief.
