This happened to me, on my android phone, while I was in a CS class where we were talking about design problems in Android.

First, the display wouldn't respond to touch at all. It stopped responding for so long, that the screen turned back off again, with the alarm still going off. Pressing the button did not turn the screen on until the 6th attempt.

At this point, I held the phone up, and let everyone know that we had a live case study on our hands, and people started to watch. The screen finally turned on; when I tried to swipe the red button over, the UI locked up when I got the button over to the "turn off" position.

The alarm was still going off. The UI was totally locked, and after about 6 seconds, the phone did that double-vibrate thing it goes when it has to kill a zombie application. So, now, I was back at the home screen ... but the alarm was still going off. People were amazed and laughing at this point.

So, I went into the Alarm application, and the indicator showed that the alarm was turned off. I turned it back on, which entailed another 2 second wait before the icon lit up. Finally, pressing it again finally turned the alarm off. It only took ~40 seconds start to finish.

And, of course, a couple of seconds after I finally got it shut off, doubleTwist just decided to randomly resume playing the track I had been listening to before class. Fucking doubleTwist.

This was a factory Samsung Galaxy S that I had only been using for a few weeks.

tl;dr : Android has a UI latency of 1-45 seconds.

The functions for alarms in the android can be so finicky can't they? I developed an app to alert me when specified servers no longer respond, and I had everything working just right (sound alerts, notifications), but for some reason the alarms liked to not clear perfectly all the time. Spent days troubleshooting it.

I've tried most of the "Custom ROM"s on the message board. After wading through pages and pages of direction of "plug it in, then unplug it, then point it towards magnetic north, then hold down all 7 buttons at the same time, and plug it back in", it gets pretty tiresome. For most of them, the wifi and cellular don't work.

I even paid for ClockworkMod ROM manager ... which didn't work. When I select, "Boot into ROM manager", it just reboots normally and dumps me back into the regular OS. I even emailed the author about it, and got no response.

Seriously, Android is a fucking disaster. I'd rather have my flip-phone back.

When you put your phone face down it put its in silent mode. I don't know if this works with an alarm but with any other noises it works fantastic. Someone calling, flip the phone and it shuts up.

You didn't think about pressing the volume key? It silences both incoming calls and snoozes alarms. Works on all android phones I've tried (10+) and my old sony ericsson OSE phones.

Although this phone very, very, very often has a bug where I'll press the volume, and nothing will happen until 2 or 3 seconds after I've stopped pressing it, trying to turn down my ringer or music or whatever, and only then does it apply all the volume updates all at once, in a fast succession. So if I'm volume up-ing, I need to be super careful; if I press the button and it doesn't work, I now know to not press it again until the phone "comes back", otherwise I'll hear "boopboopboopboop" and suddenly, whatever I'm listening to will be at max volume. Conversely, if I'm trying to turn down a loud phone call, and I don't step through the minefield of using the volume button, it'll just zero out the volume and effectively mute my speaker. This really should be the basis for a class action lawsuit.

The reason for your issues (and it's a huge problem) is that your Samsung Galaxy S was probably using TouchWiz, which is a horrible abomination that is only above the unholy abominations known as Sense and Motoblur.

Root that bitch and install some CM7 on it and UI delay will become a thing of the past.

I'm trying to work through this right now but, somehow, in the past 6 months, things have gotten so bad that when I plug my phone into my PC, the internal SD card isn't accessible via regular windows, and I can't get Kies Mini to either install or uninstall, to try and sort out if it's a driver issue ... sigh ...

I'm guessing the reason your phone isn't letting the SD Card read in Windows is because it's stuck in Charge Only mode. Try to change it to a different mode and then switch it back to SD mode.

Then say "Fuck it all, nuke it from orbit" and install CM7. Remember to back up everything you want to save (contacts, text msgs, ect).

I had a ton of issues with input delay and general sluggishness on my MyTouch 3g Slide. After some helpful direction from /r/android, I've since put CM7 on it and I absolutely love it. I think the biggest problem with Android is the manufacturer's version of Android they put on their phones, not only does it not create a unified experience across all Android devices, it's often times much more laggy and updates come out much later than they should have to.

So give that a try and follow the step by step instructions. As per /r/android, I am not responsible if you mess up your device (though you'd have to do something really stupid for that to occur).

ICS is trying to fix the problem of manufacturers ruining their phones with custom firmware, which has been so far so good.

The forum says to use SuperOneClick. Of course, the download link on shortfuse.org is broken. SuperOneClick says the phone is rooted, yet everything hangs when it tries to get root access from SuperUser.

So let's try z4root. It just hangs, and does nothing.

I feel like at this rate, I'd be better off digging ditches for $9 an hour, and just buying a new phone with that money, because time-wise, it'll work out better ...

Which version of the Galaxy S do you have? The Vibrant? The Captivate? I don't personally own a Galaxy S, but from everything I've read, they're pretty easy to root and install CM7 on. If the root guide I've posted in this reply doesn't work, try posting on the /r/android subreddit. If you're a CS major and you end up going into IT, these are the type of things you might have to deal with. I know how frustrating it can get.

Boy, there's some real subtle details that matter between the Vibrant and the other variants of the almost-the-same hardware ....

/system on the Vibrant (from TMobile at least) comes packed with a bunch of crap, so much so that there is not enough free space to install busybox. That's fixed now.

And then the recovery manager/environment/whatever it is, is some old version, which needs to be changed over to actually get into ClockworkMod recovery ... phew ...

First day of class this semester I decided to think ahead to the next day while waiting for the professor to start. So I set my alarm for 830, because my Thursday class was a lot later than the Wednesday class. Of course I did this at 825 am, so 5 minutes later my alarm goes off in my pocket.

Unlike everyone else apparently I smoothly found the power button through the outside of my jeans and shut it off before the second set of beeps. Didn't quite redeem myself for setting it in the first place though.

Motorolla razr v3 was a fucking asshole for this. If the alarm or a call sounded, you could silence it by touching one of the volume buttons on the side. Fine.

BUT if you touched the speaker button on the opposite side at the same time (such as by squeezing the phone through your pocket during the vibe part of vibe and ring), nothing would happen. The reason for this? The razr fucking hates you and wants to embarrass you in class.

You think that's bad? The alarm app I use makes me solve three math problems before it switches the alarm off.

Great when you need to get up, not so great when you get up earlier and forget all about it.
