Technically, the book is just the text. The particular format is a codex.

[–]Jaged1235 12 points13 points ago

I will never call it a book again.

I can't wait to ask someone to pass me a codex. Shit's gonna get real.

If you'd had started playing Warhammer 40k years ago you'd have been calling it a codex all along.

Well I did play this like a hundred years ago. Alas, my 40k experience goes not much farther.

That doesn't mean that "book" cannot describe the format of bounded pages. It's actually the first definition in most dictionaries, because the book as a work of writing.

The reason I use books is because there's no power and a lot of time during the zombie apocalypse.

The libraries in my area don't have much of a selection, paperbacks are in no particular order, they're closed on Mondays*, their hours are short, and the antiquated database makes searching the catalogue a real chore. Also, I'm not too good with due dates.

Edit: *Also, some of them are closed weekends. The one in which I spent a lot of time as a child is only open one day a week. The library closest to me is only open on Tuesday and Thursday.

[–]tonywartooth 4 points5 points ago

In the arctic. It freezes the body and blood solid so ice in their veins becomes internal weapons as they move slower and slower.

And eventually, without any reproductive organs and no method of healing themselves they will just decompose.

[–]tonywartooth 0 points1 point ago

Exactly. Either they're frozen solid, torn apart by their own frozen blood vessels, or so ridiculously slow you can just walk up and off them with a machete. Even smoke while doing it casual, just to look real fuckin cool. You're welcome, Reddit. I saved you from the zombie apocalypse.

[–]zaroclow 0 points1 point ago

Not really zombies, but in I am Legend, the main character spends a lot of his time reading and researching what caused people to turn into vampires; once he gets his fortress squared away. I imagine, in this totally fictional example, that you would find time for leisure activities if you ever get the essentials squared away.

[–]Monstermash042 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not just I Am Legend. But Walking Dead, WWZ, and even LOST. Reading becomes a huge part of the Zombie Apocalypse mythos. The tragedy comes from have a limited and often poor selection, and being forced to read the same book over and over.

How may ebooks books would someone need to read to make up for one e-reader? I read only a couple DRM-free books on my Swindle 2 before going back to le LCD monitor. The ppi was too low to fit much on a page, and my eyes don't like to focus on something only one arm length away for hours at a time. Also, I think I partially bricked it, when adding fonts. It still works mostly, but I remember it not wanting to update.

[–]XenoX101 4 points5 points ago

Don't get why you're so sensitive, you do realise the comic isn't even promoting normal books right? It's showing the humour of real books falling out of the mainstream and becoming 'underground' and the hilarity of 'book gangsters' if there were such a thing. If anything it is promoting e-books by saying they're going to be mainstream.

I love books, and will definitely continue to purchase real books. However, the Nook is ridiculously convenient and makes my luggage weigh much less. Before I bought my Nook, I would bring at least five books on every vacation I went on. My Nook is a space and weight saver.

There's the plane ride, being in the hotel after touring/sight seeing, and long drives with nothing to see out the window but the same old same until the destination is reached. I have never been the driver on a single vacation I've been on (family vacations), so there was plenty of time to read.

To be fair, if you're going to be reading at larger text sizes regularly, getting a DX is worth it. On the larger text sizes on my Nook you're flipping 5-6 pages a minute. I got my granddad a Kindle DX for this reason. It's not that unwieldy, and you can have quite large text while keeping the page-turns-per-minute at a normal rate.

If you wanted to carry it around everywhere it would suck, but as far as I know my granddad just reads in his armchair, so the size isn't a problem.

[–]Hehyeahno 1 point2 points ago

One will last 100 years, the other will last as long as the company hosting your file will stay in business.

Also you truly own only one of those things.

[–]DirtyDirtyPerverts 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, typically your average book will survive less than those 100 years, and I use my kindle to get all my PD texts out of the way without buying all those books. Also, I can make notes on my kindle!

Also, amazon doesn't look like it's going anywhere for a while.

[–]AusIV 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are several issues here. First, it's trivial to put arbitrary content on a kindle for easy reading. The form factor of the reader and the restrictions on the content are only related in that the form factor enables restrictions, it doesn't demand them.

Second, those limitations are only relevant if you care about staying totally legal. Given that there are tools out there for stripping DRM from kindle books, digital copies will last as long as you can keep track of the backups. I'm not promoting piracy, but I have no ethical issues with stripping DRM for content you've purchased.

Edit: Rereading that, I think I got the wrong point across. I'd rather have digital copies that were sold DRM free but, I put enough value in having digital copies for preservation that I'll buy DRM'd copies if I have confidence that I can strip the DRM if it looks like the company will go under.

The paper industry contributes to keep up forests. The paper industry practices sustainable forest management. The paper industry is not responsible for the depletion of tropical forests.

Around 11% of the timber felled throughout the world is used to make paper *. The paper industry depends on trees and needs thriving forests. It is very much in its interests that this raw material can be used sustainably and will remain available as a raw material to future generations.

From a tree, big logs are used for timber. The branches cut to maintain trees healthy are used for paper making. Also the residues from saw mills such as wood chips, are also raw material for paper.

Over the years, thinning operations weed out the weaker trees, but there is still a net gain. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reckons that there is an annual forest growth of 5 per cent in the northern hemisphere, equivalent in Europe alone to the area of 1.5 million football pitches Deforestation is generally occurring in the southern hemisphere and is mainly due to conversion of forests into agricultural land and for fuel wood collection*.

I recycle shitty books that that come in to my possession (regrettably) that I know no sane person would want to read. And I also recycle books that are falling apart and beyond repair (like ivegonemadagain said). Books don't last forever, a well made book may only last about 100 years (or even less) before it starts to fall apart. Reprints and digital copies are what will happen to the books people wish to pass on to future generations.

The comic doesn't make any ad revenue when its being rehosted on imgur.

[–]joeythehobo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seeing as how he doesn't have any ads on his website at all, I think this imgur makes sense. People that like it enough may go check it out, while all the single-hit traffic is on imgur's servers, not the original artist.

[–]EreTheWorldCrumbles 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, he probably doesn't want people going to his site.

I've seen this same comic reposted so many times it's not even close to funny anymore... How does stuff that's reposted this much make it to the front page?

What I could never understand is how it's a "one or the other" choice. When I bought my Kindle, it didn't burn every book I had in the house, nor did it smack me upside the head when I bought a paper book.

[–]JerkyIsSuperior 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Riddle me this: how can people like the comic author call themselves book lovers while simultaneously rejecting a format in which the books are being published?

That's like saying you're keeping it real by only reading books on scrolls, or reading only hardbacks.

tl;dr, reactionary claptrap isn't funny, in fact, this comic has made me slightly angry.

[–]AcmeGreaseAndShovel 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is it really criticising ebooks, though? I thought it was just a joke about how when books are "underground" there will be book "gangsters"/hipsters, which is an amusing thing to be "gangster" about.

I just can't feel involved when I'm reading a book on my sister's Kindle. That's an odd feeling when you're reading a paragraph from a PKD novel where he's describing homeopapes, which are essentially e-books.

I prefer paper books. I enjoy the tactile feeling of progression in the turning of the page, the characteristic smell of older books, and the beauty on the covers that give elegance to any shelf it fills.

I wish amazon sold both ebook and paper book in a bundle for the price of one. Then I could read the convenient way and still get something to put in a shelf.

I don't like the feel of the paper, that's why I use a E-reader. But, I still read real books on occasion.

[–]pinkswansays 0 points1 point ago

Those who are so concerned about having a "real" book must be reading the wrong kinds of books. I am usually too absorbed to give any shits as to the book "feeling" real.

I want you to know that you got downvoted because as the rediquette clearly states, "the downvote arrow is a disagree button. If someone doesn't think what you think, they're probably stupid and don't deserve any karma." But for the record, yes, yes it is.
