How about getting yourself a catfish?

[–]lbmouse 0 points1 point ago

I'm more of a dogfish person.

[–]rhoula 0 points1 point ago

They still make those?

[–]enkianderos 29 points30 points ago

Thats pretty cool. Saltwater tank I imagine. Pity they are so expensive to maintain.

[–]ColinAllCarz[S] 37 points38 points ago

Actually, he's a brackish water puffer. Not as expensive as salt but you're more limited in your fish selection.

[–]enkianderos 8 points9 points ago

Nice. I didn't know puffers lived in brackish water. Brackish is akin to dirty rivers/marshes right? The filter system uses a different technique but that is basically the only difference from freshwater tanks?

(Sorry, I have been looking at setting up an aquarium in my bedroom and still haven't decided which way to go yet.)

[–]ColinAllCarz[S] 26 points27 points ago

Brackish water just has more salinity in it then freshwater and less than saltwater. You should come and visit r/aquariums - we can help you up with setup ideas.

[–]Special_Mommy_Pop 15 points16 points ago

[–]enkianderos 5 points6 points ago

will do. Thanks.

[–]Misaria 1 point2 points ago

Thank you! I've had problems with my aquarium and I never thought of checking for an r/aquariums.. why, oh why.. but now I know that it exists!

[–]Johnnybravo60025 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for being one of the few people I've seen on here correctly identify them as Brackish. Even though later in life they do a bit better off in SW.

[–]getmoneygetpaid 0 points1 point ago

Isn't that a Green Spotted Puffer? They start in brackish and end up full marine, so you'll have to slowly up the salinity and get rid of the other fish. TBH I'm amazed he hasn't eaten his friends yet!

[–]FuckYoureShit 1 point2 points ago

They're more expensive to set up, but not all that expensive to maintain compared to freshwater.

Live rock can get expensive, especially if it's already cured, but they go a very long way in cleaning the water of toxins with 0 maintenance.

Once it's all set up, you just to have a source of freshwater to compensate for evaporation and once in a while you'll need to siphon out the waste that adds up.

If you want to get coral, it will definitely take more maintenance because coral can be very sensitive to the water as opposed to many saltwater fish and invertebrates. On top of that they need powerful lights that don't heat up the water too much.

Fish can survive without light, although that's not something I'd recommend.

My dad had a small saltwater tank, about a foot and a half tall and only about 6 inches wide.

He went on vacation once, was gone for a month, he came home to find no one had touched his tank.

there was a thick green slime on the inside of the glass, but the shrimp and fan worm were still alive and kickin.

[–]charlietulchin 0 points1 point ago

pity.

Fish: the cats of the sea.

[–]Heatherette 7 points8 points ago

I had a green spotted puffer. He died.

[–]maximushobbes 6 points7 points ago

I had a goldfish. It died too.

[–]Zombie_Lover 3 points4 points ago

I had a Grandma, the jury is still out there. But judging by the smell...

Just kidding, she died.

[–]Hobbes4247791 1 point2 points ago

I have never had a fish. None of them have died.

(Also, Hobbes high-five.)

[–]PsychedelicFairy 0 points1 point ago

I have about 10 Koi. None of them have died and probably won't for another 20-40 years. Koi ftw!

[–]DarkestPassenger 1 point2 points ago

How long did you have him? They start out ok with fresh water but quickly need brackish water. You also have to feed them little snails and stuff so they keep their teeth ground down. Like a hamster. Cute little bastards though.

[–]Heatherette 0 points1 point ago

I had him for two years..I fed him snails and freeze dried shrimp...one day he just puffed up and wouldn't unpuff. I read you had to take them out and gently squeeze the excess air out to help them, but nothing happened when i tried..and i was terrified of killing him.

[–]DarkestPassenger 0 points1 point ago

Bummer. Poor little guy.

[–]Syn7axError 44 points45 points ago

[–]speedstix 5 points6 points ago

I had a freshwater eel that chased a laser.

[–]spoiled11[!] 4 points5 points ago

But you eated it?

[–]speedstix 1 point2 points ago

no jumped out of my tank and dried up.

[–]AFemalePerspective 3 points4 points ago

It's because these fish are attracted to light that these guys still exist. They haunt my dreams at night.

[–]speedstix 1 point2 points ago

this is awesome

[–]OCDTrigger 1 point2 points ago

OP's version: works with RES. Image-fixer's "RES-friendly version": doesn't work with RES ಠ_ಠ

[–]ducttape83 0 points1 point ago

Same here, I don't know what is supposed to be more res friendly about it

[–]canoscan 0 points1 point ago

The Oatmeal did a comic about this fish.

[–]Trimm_Dich_Forever 4 points5 points ago

Not a fan of cats and still managed to be in the front page? You sir are a god.

[–]MTGandP 3 points4 points ago

If you posted a video of this, I would watch it.

[–]stanek 1 point2 points ago

Even the little guys tried to attack it.

I found it funny that they seemed to have 1 eye on the laser and the other eye on the big fucking fish that might eat them if they got in the way.

[–]spoonfulofchris 0 points1 point ago

This needs the south park cash 4 gold song.

[–]SamBone123 3 points4 points ago

Sure as fuck not a repost. Sure as fuck.

[–]schroefoe 2 points3 points ago

One of the schools my mum worked at had a saltwater tank in the library. Nothing made those kids happier than, I kid you not, Spanky the pufferfish. They had a school-wide vote and that's what they named him. Always seemed to be smiling, and always would follow you up and down the tank with his tiny smile. Awesome part: the kids got to help maintain the tank and take care of the fish.

[–]SaintsAngels 2 points3 points ago

haha! i didnt realize they did that = D

[–]danimal2011 2 points3 points ago

I was waiting for a cat to dive into the tank

[–]cheesinator 2 points3 points ago

That was a really cool looking gif.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

This is adorable!

[–]TheJeff000 1 point2 points ago

is this yours?

[–]ColinAllCarz[S] 3 points4 points ago

Sadly, no. A friend sent it to me because I used to have one just like it that died :(. I wouldn't choose to rock the pink substrate, either.

[–]dayna-mite 0 points1 point ago

It's sand, and its not pink.

[–]ColinAllCarz[S] 0 points1 point ago

Sand is a type of substrate. Sorry if I'm off on the color - looks pinkish to me.

[–]scottklarr 1 point2 points ago

Some spiders will react to/chase a laser pointer too.

[–]raspberr 1 point2 points ago

Puffer fish are adorable. One day I will have one.

[–]mondaywonderhands 1 point2 points ago

So you did a presentation about sand for a one fish audience?

[–]phantominthebrain 1 point2 points ago

We have two GSPs (green spotted puffers) right now - one is named Puffy and the other is Huffy. Puffy is older and has a does-not-give-a-fuck attitude, always looking around for food regardless of the situation. Huffy is more cautious and stays under a rock-cave until the coast is clear. These two have such interesting interactions with the world around them and themselves that you could watch them swim around for hours.

One time Puffy got sick and couldn't see well...you could tell because it kinda bumbled around, bumping into things and not going straight for food. During this troubling time, Huffy would not leave Puffy's side, sleeping right next to Puffy at night as if to comfort it's tankmate. One of the sweetest things I've ever seen ~ear-splitting man squeel~.

Need to try the lazer thing with them!

[–]thatswhatbrisaid 1 point2 points ago

I have that same kind of puffer fish! Now I just need a laser pointer apparently..

[–]brussels4breakfast 1 point2 points ago

That's pretty damned funny. Didn't realize fish would do that.

[–]vnkid 1 point2 points ago

This is so much more amusing than when cats do it.

[–]Brlkhh001 1 point2 points ago

Really, you reposted this?

[–]Tratix 0 points1 point ago

You're not a fan of cats?

You're gonna have a bad time here.

[–]timbowman1 0 points1 point ago

ON REDDIT: If you're not a big fan of cats

You're going to have a bad time.

[–]ajdotkom 0 points1 point ago

Admitted to not being a fan of cats on Reddit? Have an upvote for being so brave.

[–]anzl 0 points1 point ago

Gutsy move...putting that in your title.

[–]higgins1122 0 points1 point ago

just so you all know, in the video the laser is on a gun so it looks incredibly weird

[–]IronicSilver 0 points1 point ago

I'm really surprised ColinAllCarz survived on Reddit after opening admitting to not being a fan of cats.

[–]TheTibster 0 points1 point ago

This is better than every cat picture on reddit.

Yes, even your cat.

[–]HATES_ALL_CATS 0 points1 point ago

This made me miss my fishtank- they are so soothing. I also hate cats.

[–]megman13 0 points1 point ago

Are those tankmates or food-to-be? Because I've never been able to find anything to put with GSPs (that didn't require a tank the size of the moon).

[–]Azelixi 0 points1 point ago

what type of fish is this?

[–]Vicxlee 0 points1 point ago

What the fuck is this here, gifs are not pics.

[–]silent_p 0 points1 point ago

The little guy on the right: "N-n... now? N-now? Now. Now?"

[–]CaptainPower 0 points1 point ago

Yet a big fan of catfood.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

PIGGLEFISH

[–]Ibeadoctor 0 points1 point ago

I used to do that in the back of my old bio lab. The TA always wondered why no one would pay attention.

[–]FrejDexter 0 points1 point ago

Hahahahaha look at those clams! So funny.

[–]lukeisopinionated 0 points1 point ago

You must be new here

[–]thatfatgamer 0 points1 point ago

[–]Gavinjsup 0 points1 point ago

Aw, Siwwy fish..

[–]MagicMurderBean 0 points1 point ago

He looks fun, Do you ever get to pet him

[–]kevlarcupid 0 points1 point ago

Used to keep "freshwater" puffers and "freshwater" rays; freshwater being in quotes because they actually need to be in brackish water. Both are super fun critters, really social, and really smart. I miss that tank.

[–]Lutrus 0 points1 point ago

Facking repost.

[–]Insanitor37 0 points1 point ago

1337 points. Hopefully, you will feel the joy from seeing this.

[–]alostsoldier 0 points1 point ago

Wow. That tank is so clean. I have 3 fish that I've had since I was a teenager at my parents house. I do not know how they are alive because that tank is so incredibly neglected between my bi-monthly visits for my mail.

[–]log1k 10 points11 points ago

everyone from /r/aquariums cringed :(
