Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

You were much more talented at 12 then I am right now (at 42). :(

I need to show this to my son who is 13, his drawings look like yours at 12. He just needs confidence to keep practicing. Thanks for sharing.

Additionally, show your son this:

"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take a while. You’ve just gotta fight your way through." ― Ira Glass

You want to make art?

Make it. Constantly.

Don't worry, it's not about age, just how much time you've spent on it :) It's never to late to learn, and I believe anyone can draw as good as they'd like, it's all about hard work.

And in between all these drawings that turned out okay, I've drawn probably a million that I'd never show anyone. So if your son feels down about a drawing not being as good as he wishes, tell him that, at least for me, about 5% of my work is any good. And you still learn a lot from the drawings that go wrong too.

[–]Anodesu 52 points53 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Have you considered lessons? My photorealism teacher does portrait and wildlife drawing courses for extra money, and he does a great job. I would not be as good as I am today without him.

[–]JosephineRyan[S] 56 points57 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the future, when I feel more confident about my art, and feel that I've developed my own techniques as far as I can, then I'll start taking classes :)

I have a friend that I consider to be quite good at drawing. I think he actually went to school for animation. I tell him frequently that I wish I was able to draw, and he expresses a similiar opinion to your post...that anyone can draw, you just have to do it. A lot. And I admit, I find myself wondering if it's actually true, or it's just something that people that are artistically talented think is true because well, they're able to do it with so little effort. Or at least a whole lot less effort than those of us that are happy if our circles actually look round.

[–]gargalesis 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Check out Jonathan Hardesty, who started drawing every day and went from this to this in about 5 years. He now teaches art. It definitely takes effort, but well worth it if one dedicates even a small amount of time to drawing over a consistent period. It will add up.

Here's the thread of his progress, condensed into video here.

Both of you, don't give up!

[–]klutch2 83 points84 points ago*

Let's see, break down the numbers. If I'm reading it the same way you are it's as follows:

His username: 20127010603170562316

Card Number: 2012 7010 6031 7056

Expiration: 3/16

CVV: 231 or 316

If it's that, the card information is as follows:

MII = 2

Card Issuer #: 01270

Account #: 106031705

Check digit: 6

Now let's run it against the Luhn algorithm to determine if the card number is valid by reversing the order, and doubling up on every other number and if it's more than nine, subtract nine from it. Remember to exclude the check digit.

2 0 1 2 7 0 1 0 6 0 3 1 7 0 5

5 0 7 1 3 0 6 0 1 0 7 2 1 0 2

Double up:

5 0 7 2 3 0 6 0 1 0 7 4 1 0 2

Add them up:

5 + 0 + 7 + 2 + 3 + 0 + 6 + 0 + 1 + 0 + 7 + 4 + 1 + 0 + 2 = 38

Add check digit: 38 + 6 = 44

This number is not a valid number as it is not divisible by 10.

TL:DR; I like watermelons.

It seems like there's a huge jump from 2006 to 2007. Did you have a really good class? Did you just spend an inordinate amount of time drawing? It's really something to see that leap.

[–]JosephineRyan[S] 88 points89 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No classes, but I did spend more time drawing. I That's when I started drawing all night until it was time to get up and go to school, and completely ignored my homework. I would draw from 12 in the evening untill 7 in the morning 3-4 days on a row, just taking naps after school, til the drawing was finished.

At first my mother didn't like it, and thought I should spend more time doing school work and sleeping, but one night she was about to tell me to go to bed around 3 at night or something, but saw me working on this, and decided it was best to leave me alone: http://josephine-death.deviantart.com/art/Mathilda-95520817

(That was 2008. And my grades were ok, just not as good as they could have been)

Many of these are from photos, some from imagination. Now I usually spend 50-100 hours on each drawing. I used a grid sometimes when I was younger, not anymore. I often draw 2-3 small sketches first, before starting a large drawing. The last drawings are from A3-A0 (about 1 meter wide)

[–]aradicalpanda 59 points60 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You should try drawing some non-photo reference pieces such as fantastical scenes or your own people. Trust me, when you pull it off well knowing you weren't using a reference, it makes you feel much more empowered as an artist. Though that's merely a suggestion. Not bad work.

[–]JosephineRyan[S] 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I often do that too :) But you're right I should do it more. I don't think I spend wuite as much time on the fantasy ones. Maybe just 20-ish hours, and that does affect the quality.

[–]elharry-o 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In my experience, once i felt confident without references, my true artistic sense came to life. What i see in your work is a tremendous technique, and glimpses of your own style. I would love to see your style take over.

I must say that I like the on the right 2007/2008 the most, as they have more depth than the other ones. The lighting on the -07 one is really great!

You can have a great future as an artist and if you fancy money, get a Wacom board (you can probably get your hands on a Intous4 quite cheap), download Illustrator and then try to make it into advertising.

And for god's sake, stop using Reddit! It'll destroy us all!

EDIT: For atheists, "god's sake" is an expression.

This was my first colored realistic human face drawing that I had ever done. This was all done in Photoshop using brush and erase tools. I drew from a photograph and didn't draw through.

It kind of surprised me how well it came out, thinking that this was my second realistic human face drawing ever (this was my first), I just added the pixel noise with a filter. I think I got secretly better at drawing with Photoshop when I did image manipulations and photography for years.

I used to draw really well when I was a kid, back to when I as about 8 or so. Adults and classmates used to accuse me of tracing all the time, then I'd draw something in front of them so they'd believe me.

I kept at it through high school and then I got an insane art teacher who hated everything I drew, so I stopped taking art classes. Then in 1999 we got the internet at my house and video games were getting really good and I just sort of stopped drawing. Went to college, got a history degree, got a job, back in school again for an MA in history. I've doodled maybe 5 things in the last 10 years.

I feel really sad about it, I tried drawing something last year only to find my skill had decayed so much that I didn't feel inspired to draw again. I want to, but I feel like I'd be starting over at a my 5-year-old level again.

So my advice, you are outstanding, do not do what I did and let your skills fade away. Keep drawing, you could find a way to be a paid artist one day.

Blacksheep01: This is heartbreaking! It's never too late. You're putting limits on yourself here. Draw now, draw often. It's a muscle. Yours have atrophied but they're not gone. Work them out, get them strong, get over that hump and you'll have nowhere to go but up up up. BTW: You can do this at any age, don't make excuses!

Thanks for the motivation, I nearly felt like crying after proofreading my own reply because I used to love drawing so much, it was my #1 go to activity through my teen years. I'm not even sure why I stopped, it just sort of happened.

Anyway, you are right, I really should just start again, set aside a few hours a week where I draw one thing and not get discouraged about the results. Hopefully my hands will find their way back to where they used to be.

Good stuff! If you really want to get good ad drawing, draw portraits from life. Their charm is even stronger, and the results don't look as flat.

(I don't mean that flat thing negatively, it's just what happens when people create drawings from 2D images. True depth comes from drawing what you see before you)

[–]Legolomaniak 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

did you create the picture in the 2007 row of the girl with tape on her mouth or were you replicating photo already around?

[–]JosephineRyan[S] 2 points3 points ago

It's from a photo. It was posted to deviantArt as a stock photo, and I did the drawing with the photographers permission, but since then the photo's been misused a lot, and she doesn't offer it as a stock photo any more.

[–]RestoreThis 1 point2 points ago

I think you draw (pun not intended) too much emphasis on eyes. You are so unbelievably talented, that when you channel that much talent into one area, it becomes too much of a focal point.

It works in about 15/40. The rest are still unbelievably talented, but I think the eyes detract. You probably intend this and it very well may be the reality of what you are seeing. Just trying to help you because with your level of talent, you probably won't find too many criticisms from here on out.

Beautiful transition.

Keep working at it.

I showed the same type of progression and then let real life steal my drawing time. Don't let it happen to you.

It's so heartbreaking knowing it's somewhere inside of me and now, at 46, I can't seem to give it the time to bring it back out. I sketch something for my daughter, crudely, and people around me tell me how good it is when it's actually a tragic shadow of what I used to be able to do.

One day. When I retire.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You've got photorealism down really well - I would highly suggest taking the next step and start doing life drawing lessons from a live model, as well as some anatomy studies - if you have a local college nearby, check with them! Many often have open sessions where you can drop in, pay a couple bucks, and draw a live model. Once you understand those things, you won't feel so much of a need to rely on photos for reference and your art will take on a whole new life. It will amaze you how much different drawing from life is vs a still photo, and how much you'll learn.

Your stuff is really excellent as far as technical skill, but sometimes it can appear a bit stiff because of the use of 2d photo references - sometimes the reference is really obvious, and it can take away from the feel of the artwork itself if that makes sense. :)

WOW. You were amazing at 13 but by your late teens, WTF, those are absolutely amazing drawings. I love all of 2007 and also 2010, third one over... the contrast is great and it's such a simple picture where parts of her face arent even outlined but your mind can fill it all in.

Some of these are better pictures than I could take with my SLR.
